5 NEN 2026 INTRODUCTION This standard forms part of the series of standards titled: "Mobile Cranes". The purpose of this series of standards is to rationalize the methods of designing, manufacturing and testing, as well as the use and maintenance of cranes, in order tot improve quality and safety. In addition comparison of the designs of several manufacturers is thus facilitated. Nevertheless designing and manufacturing cranes demands such a basic knowledge and wide experience, that sole compliance with this standard is not a guarantee of a satisfactory product yet. The series of standards has been prepared by the subcommittee 345 02 02 "Mobile Cranes" of the standards committee 345 02 "Cranes" and supersedes the standard NEN 324 "Requirements for the design, construction, testing and maintenance of mobile cranes with regard to safety" (16 edition). The standard NEN 2026 supersedes the corresponding parts of NEN 324. Progress in the specialist field has led to an entirely new scheme. It would therefore be unduly degressive to mention all modifications and additions here. In general it may be considered that understanding has considerably deepened during the last few years, which is reflected in the new standards. Thus it was possible, among other consequences, to achieve a reduction of the margin of uncertainty in crane design, by taking into account factors of influence that are at present more accurately known. In order to promote international harmonization of standards in the field of mobile cranes adherence to internationally accepted views and calculation procedures has been pursued. The standards committee takes part in the work of Technical Committee 6 of "Cranes, lifting appliances and related excavator equipment" of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). In this respect particular reference is made to the activities of the Benelux subcommittee "Harmonization of standards with regard to lifting appliances". This subcommittee, which consists of delegations from the Belgian and Netherlands standards committees, started on its work in. This committee aims at advanced publication of a standard on cranes, including mobile cranes, of equivalent content to be valid within Benelux. This standard will be published in parts, in order to facilitate applying any amendments deemed necessary.
6 NEN 2026 The series of standards titled "Mobile cranes" wil comprise: NEN 2026 - Mobile cranes - General directives - Documents, testing, operation and maintenance NEN 202 - Mobile cranes - Structural requirements regarding safety (in preparation) combined with the following standards of the series of standards titled "Cranes": NEN 2018 - Loads and combinations of loads NEN 201 - The metal structure NEN 2020 - The mechanical equipment (in preparation) NEN 2021 - Electrical equipment NEN 2022 - Stability (security against turning over) NEN 2025 - Hand- and armsigns for the guidance of cranes and hoisting gear NEN 2028 - Cranes - Automatic limit devices (in preparation) In Belgium corresponding standards will be published, to be indicated by the numbers NEN E 52-001 to NEN E 52-010 inclusive. From the discussions within the Benelux subcommittee it appeared possible to formulate similar points of view on many items and thus achieve Benelux harmonization. In regard to references to other standards included in the series of standards, in Belgium references to corresponding Belgian standards apply. The legal requirements applicable to mobile cranes in the Netherlands are mentioned in clause 4 of this standard. In Belgium different legal requirements apply.
NEN 2026 1 Scope This standard pertains to mobile cranes and comprises the related definitions, the information essential for an application and a tender, guidelines for documents and inscriptions, and procedures for putting into service, testing, operation and maintenance. 2 Field of application This standard is applicable to mobile cranes. 3 Definitions In the series of standards titled "Mobile Cranes" the following definitions apply. 3.1 hoisting crane: A hoisting device, equipped and intended for moving freely suspended loads. 3.2 mobile crane (to be subsequently called crane): A mobile hoisting crane, the movement of which is not confined to a fixed track. Note Mobile cranes include inter alia: truck-mounted cranes, crawler-mounted cranes and other selfpropelled cranes mounted on a manoeuvrable chassis, trailer cranes, truck-loading cranes and the like, whether operated in a free-on-wheels condition or not or supported by stabilizing jacks, as well as dragline excavators and devices used as mobile cranes (e.g. hydraulic excavators or scoops equipped with a lifting hook, lifting eye or any other attachments suitable for lifting purposes). 3.3 radius : The radius of a circle, lying in a horizontal plane, that is traversed by the lifting hook upon slewing of the crane, the hoist rope being assumed vertically suspended. See also the notes at 3.5. 3.4 outreach: The horizontal distance measured at ground level between the centre of the hook and the nearest vertical line tangential to the crane underworks (e.g. the rear side of the vehicle carrying the crane; where applicable, outriggers), the hoist rope(s) being assumed vertically suspended. See also the notes at 3.5. 3.5 hook range: The distance from the point in the crane's plane of support, intersected by the vertical axis of the slewing circle, to any point in space occupied by the hook, the hoist rope being assumed vertically suspended. The hook range may be expressed in terms of the radius or the outreach (see 3.3 and 3.4) and the hook's perpendicular distance to the crane's plane of support.
