A WATER-SECURE WORLD FOR ALL 2019
FOREWORD Even as water flows through and connects all the Sustainable Development Goals, the world faces a water and sanitation crisis. Nine out of 10 natural disasters are water-related; 81 million people could be fed each year with the crops lost in repeated droughts; and 2.1 billion people lack reliable access to safely managed drinking water, while 4.5 billion people lack access to safely managed sanitation services. This is why, in 2017, the World Bank together with its partners launched the Global Water Security & Sanitation Partnership (GWSP) a partnership for a water-secure world for all. Five priority themes have been identified to achieve the water-related SDGs and these form the foundation for the GWSP s mission. To address the challenges of increasing water scarcity and variability to ensure that results are maintained into the future, a renewed focus on the multiple facets of resilience and sustainability is needed. However, without new efforts to improve inclusion, many will still be unable to reap the benefits of water and will be disproportionately impacted by water-related disasters. Helping countries achieve greater sustainability and inclusion in the water sector requires investment in institutions, to complement the traditional focus on building infrastructure. Building the institutions and infrastructure needed for universal access and more sustainable water management practices also demands a vast increase in financing for the water sector, which can only be achieved by improving financial viability. These five themes provide the inspiration for this year s Water Cartoon Calendar. By using humor to raise awareness, communicate complexity and we hope shift hearts and minds, the calendar continues the legacy of the Water and Sanitation Program (WSP), one of the GWSP s predecessors. We thank the talented artists from around the world who helped us create these memorable images.
