Maintenance experience with GIS 1 st Generation What kind of experience has been gained from us as manufacturer together with our customers along the complete service life? Maintenance are performed more or less according original operational manual from current state very short intervals Scope of work was almost unchanged over the decades wear and tear observed no additional All GIS of 1 st Generation are inhouse this supports long lifetime Maintenance is principally time-based Exception are CB with high numbers of switching cycles Page 9
Maintenance experience with GIS 1 st Generation What kind of experience has been gained from us as manufacturer together with our customers along the complete service life? Topic Cast-resin isolated voltage transformer PD Loose shielding Headless screws Single events of leakages after maintenance at nontouched O-Rings (floating bearing of bushing) Illustration Solution Preventive PD-measurment at VT s Replacement by SF 6 - isolated VT s Replacement by optimized headless screw; included in standard-maintenance kit Replacement of affected O-Rings Gas compartments to be inspected by acustic PDmeasurement (without opening) Page 10
Review Outlook Conclusion of Siemens report as of 2004 on the occation of the ETG- Symposium in Germany - Diagnostic of electrical assets Technical recommendation for further operation check of all busbars (shielding topic) replacement of suspicious VT s following OEM-maintenance recommendation By implementing these recommended measures a further operation of the GIS is possible for at least 15years! 0 Page 11 Expected lifetime at market launch 5 15 10 ETG-Symosium 2004 today 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 Service Lifetime expectation in 2004 +15years Estimation as of 2004 of expected lifetime of GIS 1 st Generation are yet confirmed Report: Diagnoseverfahren zur Zustandsbewertung von gasisolierten Schaltanlagen als Bestandteil des Assetmanagements 2004 Schichler, Sonnenberg, Glaubitz, Wolf, Fritsche
CIGRÉ and GIS 1 st Generation Key messages of the CIGRÉ-Brochure 499 (June 2012) according irregularities at GIS in long-time operation SF 6 -leakages (mainly outdoor) Special construction- and material issues Corrosion Mechanical wear (mainly drives) Our GIS-installations of 1st generation are showing a very small sensitivity according this mentioned general observations. Generally very positive experiences are gained. Electrical wear (mainly contact system) Page 12
Tightness of GIS in long-time operation 1. IMPORTANT due to EU-F-Gas regulation and self-committment 2. O-Rings do have an important role up to date no failures during operation Actual report/investigation regarding life expectation of O-Rings CIGRÉ Session B3 2016 in Paris Report 1) at 25.08.2016 by Soichi Moriguchi (Japan CHUBU Electric Power Utility) The result of the examplary investigation of 69 O-Rings 2) (Ø 10mm) of GIS after 32 years operation in outdoor application was, those O-Rings have a life expectation up to 51 years. Life expectation even higher for O-Rings at indoor GIS. 1) Asset Management for Aged primary equipment 2) Design, material and stress are comparable with O-Rings our GIS of 1st generation Page 13
Global view of life expectation of GIS 1 st generation Bay years experience MTBF in years Failure rate λ (1/100 years) MTBF (without failure source human ) Failure rate λ (1/100 Jahre) SIEMENS 8D1 (up to 100kV / 25kA) CIGRÉ 1) (100kV - 200kV) 26.604 700 0,14 2) 26.379 425 0,24 1.150 0,09 MTBF value of 700 years is better than CIGRÉ-Statistic and is not dominated by the GIS itselfs but by other reasons. Wrong operation (modules) e.g. replacement of Secondary equipment Gas extraction in wrong gas compartments 5 safety rules ignored Pollution/contmination Mainly due to no or skipped maintenance 1) Source: Cigré`s 3 rd Survey WG A3.06, 10/2012 Calculation based on Cigré 513; Table 5-52 2) The reliability statistic for the GIS 8D1 (up to 110kV / 25kA) was compared with the corresponding voltage level of 100kV 200kV from Cigré`s 3rd Survey WG A3.06, 10/2012 Page 14

SIEMENS GIS 1 st generation - Status mirrored on 5 Equipment factors acc. CIGRÉ* Condition & reliability Costs for maintenance and repair Know-how/experience about GIS equipment Very little failure rate No end of life visible Service experience >40 years available (Costs, effectiveness, necessity etc.) Repair individual Provision of certified and skilled supervisors Active Know-How management and product monitoring worldwide Availability of wear parts and consumption material Standardized maintenance packages abailable Upgrade or usage of `Re-used` parts Availability of components for repair and extension Generally available for repair also by using `Re-used` parts Single production nessary Page 16 *CIGRÉ 499 - Residual Life Concepts Applied to HV GIS - Working Group B3.17 Chapter 3.3 Residual life
Further technical solutions and economic feasibility 1 2 4 3 1 2 3 Replacement of DS- & ES drives (H104-6) by actual drives 8D-mot (serial production) PD-measurement & -evaluation cast-resin isoltaed VT s Replacement by SF6-isolated VT s Replacement of oil-filled HV-cables by dry-cables acc. IEC 62271-209 (VPE / XLPE) 4 Replacement of double-pressure CB by CB of current GIS production 8DN8 Each technical solution is always challanged by the economic feasibility and depends on the individual situation as well as on the customer strategy. Summary At GIS of 1st generation no end of life is visible Long service-life is supported by Indoor application (no corrosion) Conventional grid station (less switching operations stable S/S) Performance of OEM-recommended maintenance does support long service life According to the title of this lecture: Retirement in the age of 67 years seems to be possible.
