EDP is a reference company in Iberia, with a strong presence in Brazil and considerable investments in USA and the rest of Europe... Portugal Generation capacity : 9.0 GW Electricity distribution: 46.5 TWh; 6.1 million customers Gas distribution: 201 thousand customers Gas supply: 119 thousand customers Brazil Generation capacity: 1.7GW Electricity distribution 24.4 TWh; 2.6 million customers Renewables Europe Generation capacity: 2.9 GW Energy generated: 3.9 TWh U.S.A. Generation capacity: 1.9 GW Energy generated 3.9TWh Spain Generation capacity 3.0 GW Electricity distribution 9.7 TWh; 628 thousand customers Gas supply 509 thousand customers 1

The EU has set ambitious goals to progressively decarbonise its economy Emissions targets in EU GtCO 2 e 5.6-8% -20% -80%/-95% 1990 2008-2012 2020 2050 International agreement Kyoto Protocol EU 2020 Climate & Energy Package G8 summit in Italy 2

This goal can only be achieved by increasing electrification of energy demand and decarbonising the power sector Emissions reduction as a function of the share of electricity in final energy demand % CO 2 emissions reduction Emissions factor Zero Decarbonise power Renewables Nuclear Carbon capture and storage Today s Increase electrification Transport (EV) H&C Energy efficiency % electricity in final energy demand 3

Smart Grids are hence key to meet the challenges of more renewables, increased energy efficiency and the electric vehicle Electric Vehicle Renewables Smart Grids Energy Efficiency EDP s project aims at gradually and consistently developing a smarter distribution grid 4

The first step is to install the platform in the distribution network of the City of Évora - Unesco World Heritage Monument 1. Évora municipality: 54.000 inhabitants 1.307 km2 of area Urban and rural areas 2. The project includes: 30k Energy Boxes 350 DTC in MV/LV transformers Integration of IT systems Communications infrastructures Set-up of new services and products 3. Involvement of the major players of the municipality 4. Coordination with the national electric vehicle charging network 5

The goal is to extend the intelligence on the grid to the low voltage network using new equipments and technologies Distribution HV network Production Transmission Station VHV/HV MV network Substation HV/MV LV network WAN A EB LAN HAN C B Central Systems (commercial & technical) Management Operation Data management Integration with current systems... Retailer/ Consumer Secondary Substation MV/LV Distribution Transformer Controller (DTC) Monitoring & Control Metering Concentrator Microgeneration and load control (future)... Energy Box (EB) Metering Remote operation Circuit breaker Tariff flexibility HAN interface QoS information... 6

Internally EDP is working on the value drivers of the solution, in order to validate the value creation and to measure results Value drivers Energy efficiency Efficiency in consumption Technical losses Commercial losses Operations efficiency Quality of Service Emerging technologies Efficiency in technical operations Efficiency in commercial operations Technical Quality of Service Commercial Quality of Service Micro-generation Electric vehicle KPIs Consumption reduction Peak to non-peak transfer Technical losses reduction Commercial losses reduction Energy recovered Fraud detection rate O&M costs reduction Meter reading and work orders cost reduction Work order average time reduction Interrupt of supply reduction (duration and frequency) Quality of supply Customer satisfaction Increase in micro-generation integration EV integration 7

The consumer will benefit from the development of new and better energy services Today Tomorrow Based on quarterly manual meter readings combined with energy estimation Based on remote reading and real time consumption Acess to the information Avaliable by internet only and based on the last meter reading Increased flexibility through an access to the energy profile using internet, displays, PDA, etc. Services Contract changes typically need to be scheduled and performed on location All contract changes can be performed remotely Tariffs Fewer price plans and tariffs Increased flexibility in pricing and tariffs. Limited value added services Capacity to inform consumers by different channels including social networks Energy management kits Billing Value added services 8

A selected customer sample will have in-home displays and efficiency software in PC/PDA/Smartphone connected to Energy Box HAN Energy Box ZigBee Display WiFi PC / PDA 9

EDP is also testing new public lighting in Évora including LEDs, light regulators and remote management systems Public lighting in the InovCity will have improved efficiency Replacement of traditional lights by LEDs in some central places Introduction of light regulators and presence sensors Introduction of more flexible public light control, operated by the customer (municipality) via Web portal Special care in historical places (world heritage) 10

In March 2011, EDP Distribuição celebrated one year of the InovGrid Project InovCity one year Conference : InovCity Store DTC installed in 350 PTs 20 EV charging points In-home displays in retailing Energy Efficiency audits to Public Services In-home Display testing in Clients Smart management of Public lighting flow 11

Conclusion On top of improving the quality of service while maximizing operational efficiency, DSOs also need to integrate more renewables and to promote energy efficiency Smart grids are the answer to these new challenges; smart metering is one first step towards that direction Involvement of customers and other stakeholders is key for the success of the project, as well as a solid communications infrastructure Évora InovCity is a privileged location for testing the new solution being developed and to prepare a future nationwide rollout 12
