About Automotive Electrical Multi-Testing An Automotive Electrical Multi-Tester can give you valuable information about the condition and operation of an automotive electrical system and its parts. Using this tool, you can: a) Find shorts and broken connections. b) Identify overloaded circuits. c) Test battery condition at rest and while starting engine. d) Check condition of lamps, relays and electrical motors. If you are not experienced in doing this type of diagnostic test, the work should be done by a qualified technician. Controls. To power the unit, connect the Power Cord to the vehicle s power supply using Battery Power Cord (9), Accessory Power Cord (2), and/or Power Cord Extension (20). 2. Set the V-CHECK switch in the OFF position. The display will show the voltage of the battery. 3. Press and hold the side of the Converter Power Switch (4). The Red Power Test LED will illuminate, and the Buzzer will sound repeatedly, if the Buzzer switch is depressed. 4. In this situation, if connected to the Test Pin Jack, the Test Probe (9) is energized with the battery voltage and can be used for further testing. CAUTION: The Test Probe (9) is powered and will create an arc and short circuit if touched to ground. This tester has circuit breakers built in to help prevent a fire in the event of a short circuit. 5. Press and hold the = side of the Converter Power Switch (4). The Green Power Test LED will illuminate, and the Buzzer will sound repeatedly, if the Buzzer switch is depressed and the Test Probe is connected to any vehicle ground. 6. Set the V-CHECK switch to the ON position. LED B will light. The display will show the voltage of the Test Probe connection, and the Converter Power Switch will be disabled. 7. Set the OP-OUT switch in the OFF position. The two additional Relay Test Jacks on the side of the unit will be disabled. SKU 95625 For technical questions, please call -800-444-3353. Page 5

8. Set the OP-OUT switch in the ON position. LED Light A will light. The two additional Relay Test Jacks on the side of the unit will be powered with the battery voltage, so they can be used if desired for additional power sources. These should be used in conjunction with the Negative Test Lead (23b) which can be plugged into the Ground Lead Jack at the top of the unit. 9. If light is needed, press the Light Switch which will light the bright LED at the top of the unit. This is useful as a flashlight when making or testing connections or components. NOTES:. The Ground Lead Jack is internally connected to the negative terminal of the battery. It can be used any time during testing as an active ground. 2. If the polarity connection of the battery lead is wrong, the Buzzer will sound continuously as a warning. The connection should be corrected before proceeding to prevent damage to any components. 3. If the current exceeds 8 Amps, or there is a direct short in the circuit, the circuit breaker will trip. Wait at least 30 seconds, repair the problem and press the circuit breaker reset button on the bottom of the unit. SKU 95625 For technical questions, please call -800-444-3353. Page 6

Operation Measuring Battery Voltage from Inside the Vehicle:. Connect the Power Cord (22) and the Accessory Power Cord (2) together. Plug the Accessory Power Cord into the accessory jack (cigarette lighter jack) in the vehicle. 2. Set the V-CHECK switch in the OFF position. The LED display will show the vehicle s battery voltage level. 3. If desired, you can start the engine while the test unit is connected to monitor the battery performance during starting and running. Measuring Battery Voltage:. Connect the Battery Power Cord (9) and the Power Cord together. If a longer cable is needed, connect the Power Cord Extension (20). 2. Connect the RED clip of the Battery Connection Lead to the POSITIVE terminal of the vehicle battery. Connect the BLACK clip of the Battery Connection Lead to the NEGATIVE terminal of the vehicle battery. 3. Set the V-CHECK switch of the tester unit in the OFF position. 4. Read the battery voltage on the LED display. 2+ volts is ideal, but readings from 0-4 volts are acceptable. Measuring Battery Voltage While Starting Engine:. Follow procedures discussed above. WARNING: Keep hands and loose clothing clear of all engine components during start up. Never reach into a running engine, serious injury may result. Operate internal combustion engines only in a wellventilated area as fumes may contain highly poisonous Carbon Monoxide, a colorless and odorless gas. 2. Observe and record battery voltage during start up. 3. Voltage will normally drop below 2 volts during start-up, then rebound above 2 volts to approximately 4-4.5 volts as the alternator recharges the battery. Check your vehicle manufacturer s specifications for the proper readings. SKU 95625 For technical questions, please call -800-444-3353. Page 7
