Notes: (a) The headings represent the new race/ethnicity categories established by the federal government (see footnote (c) below for an explanation of the changes.) Prior to 2010, the race/ethnicity categories were: Hispanic, Black Non-Hispanic, Alaskan Native, Asian or Pacific Islander, White Non-Hispanic, Race/Ethnicity Unknown, and Non-Resident Alien. The category "Non-Resident Alien" includes all international students who are not resident aliens. All U.S. citizens and resident aliens are reported in the appropriate race categories. The minority percentages are based on the U.S. and resident alien student population. (b) Included in 2005-06 counts are 24 students displaced by Hurricane Katrina who were enrolled in the following Yale schools during the Fall 2005 semester: Yale College - international, 1 male; white, 1 male; unknown, 3 males and 6 females; Graduate School - international, 3 females; unknown, 3 males; Drama - international, 1 female; white, 1 female; Law - white, 1 male and 1 female; EPH - white, 1 female; unknown, 1 male and 1 female. (c) In the Fall, 2010, the Department of Education revised its rules by which data on race/ethnicity was to be collected and reported to the federal government. Data collection was changed to a two-question format: 1) Are you Hispanic or Latino; 2) Regardless of what you answered in #1, which of the following groups do you consider yourself to be a member: (a) Black, (b) Indian/Alaskan Native, (c) Asian, (d) or other Pacific Islander, and (e) White. As the transition is made from the old to the new method of reporting race/ethnicity, it may be useful to keep the following issues on comparability in mind: 1. The number of Hispanics was higher because of the priority placed on the first question. Any U.S. citizen or permanent resident who indicated "Hispanic" was counted as Hispanic regardless of what other categories were selected by the student. All other (i.e. non-hispanic) students who indicated more than one race were reported in IPEDS as "two or more races." 2. The counts of all races, particularly Blacks, was lower. In the old format, Blacks were the trumping race. In the new format, Hispanics were the trumping race. 3. The counts of Blacks are lower because of the new "two or more" reporting category. Under the old rules, if a person indicated that he/she was Black and Asian, he/she was counted as Black. Under the new regulations, a person who indicated that he/she is Black and Asian was counted in the "two or more races" category, thus depleting the counts of the other racial categories. 4. The number of Asians was lower because the old category of Asian/Pacific Islander was split into two separate groups: (a) Asian and (b) and Other Pacific Islander. 5. The category of " and Other Pacific Islander" was made into a new separate category, so comparisons with years prior to 2010 were not possible. 6. The new reporting category of "two or more races" depleted the numbers that would be reported in all of the racial categories. For example, under the old rules, if a student indicated that he/she was white and any other race, they would have been counted in the specific non-white racial category. Under the new regulations, that student was counted in the category of "two or more races." 7. The number of "race/ethnicity unknown" decreased. When collecting data, individuals were no longer given the choice to select "Other" as a racial category, nor were they able to select "I prefer not to answer."
