Hard to believe summer has come and gone. Fall is a great time for driving the winding roads of Southern Indiana. Get your Porsche some exercise before putting it into hibernation mode for the winter! I'd like to congratulate Mark Roethemeier on being recognized by the PCA Executive Committee as a finalist for "enthusiast of the year" for his efforts to revitalize the Southern Indiana Region. Events Page October - 2012 I m still enjoying the memory of our drive on Indiana 66 on the way to the Overlook. Wow that road is a great drive through the Hoosier National Forest. Up, down, right, left and great views and no tractors to surprise anyone! The trees were just starting to turn colors, not that I was looking at anything but the next upcoming challenge in the road! I heard a few comments about having worked up an appetite on the drive. We really did schedule a good weather day. We had a nice turnout of cars with several generations of 911 s and a couple of Caymans, but better yet some great discussion and a good time over lunch.
The lunch at the Overlook was once again up to its usual standard. For me, I had the Pork Chop covered with a honey/apple glaze and small apple slices. Yum-Yum! I noticed everyone else s plates piled high. And we were close to the windows so we had a nice view looking down at the long bend in the Ohio River. The Overlook is a really nice destination.
Upcoming event Drive to the Huber Winery The Huber Winery drive is October 20. This will be a great fall drive and also the last one of year. The destination is a great place for foods, produce, and sampling of the harvest. Many times there is live music and comfortable areas to relax and have lunch. But, what really makes this special is all the other Porsches that will convene on this place. CIR (Indy area) and the Kentucky region Porsche clubs will also be there. You can expect 100+ Porsches to be there. Huber s provides great parking for the Porsche groups on a grassy area and it is like a car show! This year we particularly want to have an SIR presence. Do plan to go to this event This is the best time of year for drives as November and afterward tend to swing away from fall weather. Set your calendar in advance so you can be there and participate with Porsche friends! 1st Saturday event at D-Pat on 11/3 1 st Sat will be November 3 rd. Be there 9am. It is a nice time to stop in and see all our Porsche friends from D-Pat and SIR. A donut never fails to sweeten ones morning. Thanks to Tony for being our host! Below is the SIR Events Calendar for 2012. The events have been color coded for added meaning. Set your calendars in advance to give the best opportunity to participate as much as possible. Thanks! Mark Roethemeier

I picked up my 993 last Friday and had just enough time to clean it and prepare for the Overlook drive. I am delighted to say that the rough idle has gone. I have not been able to really flog the engine yet but there is already quite noticeable increase in torque. Kudos to Danny and Foreign Performance for their persistence and attention to detail. I picked up my Panamera several weeks ago; the body work is excellent. However, the handling was not right; the car was oversteering. I thought this may have been due to the wheels having been switched left for right, but the problem has persisted despite correcting the position of the wheels. I returned the car to the service department today to see if they can diagnose the problem. Hopefully this is just a tire issue. Stay posted. Criss Yelton
911 At Nurburgring Porsche released a video of its 911 Carrera S lapping the Nürburgring last month, and with a time of 7:37.9, the quintessential sports coupe continues to impress. With Timo Kluck behind the wheel, this Carrera S posted better times around the 'Ring than the 997 911 Turbo and, according to PorscheBoost, it even knocked a full two seconds off the time the Carrera S recorded last year. The run took place on August 28, but Porsche only published the video this week. After checking recorded lap times posted on Wikipedia, the 911's run was faster than independent tests of the Lexus LFA, Chevrolet Corvette ZR1, Nissan GT-R and Ferrari 458 Italia (which all posted times of 7:38).
Hot off the presses (courtesy - http://www.telegraph.co.uk): Fast cars boost men's testosterone levels: research Driving a fast car may boost a man's health by increasing his testosterone levels, according to new research. Scientists have discovered the thrill of getting behind the wheel of a sports car makes the body produce more of the hormone. But driving an old banger makes levels drop. The latest findings suggest there may be a biological explanation for why some men rush out and buy a sports car when struck by a 'midlife crisis'. Lower testosterone has been linked with increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and depression. Men over 50 with low hormone readings are 33 per cent more likely to die prematurely than those with higher levels. Although all men produce less of the hormone as they get older, levels can vary considerably from one person to another. Researchers from the Concordia University in Montreal recruited 39 young men for their study. Each one got to drive a 75,000 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet for one hour, followed by an hour in a 16-year-old Toyota Camry, a family car. Tests on saliva samples showed a significant increase in testosterone while drivers were cruising around in the Porsche. But there was either no effect, or even a slight decline, when they got behind the wheel of the battered old Toyota. Researchers noted the most potent effect was when volunteers were driving through town, where there were plenty of potential female admirers. But hormones even rose slightly when they were out on the open road, with no spectators, according to the study published in the journal Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Scientists say the effect of a fast car on a man's body is a form of 'sexual signaling' where males compete for the attention of the opposite sex. In a report on their findings the researchers said: 'Testosterone levels were more responsive when driving the new Porsche than when driving the decrepit Toyota. 'Endowing the men with a car that few individuals could afford prompted their testosterone levels to rise significantly.' Fast cars are not the only thing to influence male hormone levels. Previous research has shown football teams that wear red may have a sporting advantage over their opponents because it may boost testosterone. Teams playing in front of their own supporters also see a rise in hormone levels, which may explain the so-called 'home' advantage.
As Gary Collins mentioned previously, congratulations to Mark Roethemeier for being named nominee as a recipient of the: GLEN LAZAR HARRY BLANCHARD MEMORIAL TROPHY PCA ENTHUSIAST OF THE YEAR. This award was established by the late Bruce "King Carrera" Jennings as an annual award to be presented to the Region member who best exemplifies the spirit and guidelines of PCA. The award is more commonly known as the Enthusiast of the Year Award. Glen Lazar was from Towson, Maryland. He was a very enthusiastic and well-liked driver who raced a Super Speedster with much success in regional and national events during the mid-to late 1950's. Mr. Jennings raced against Mr. Lazar for several years in a Super Speedster and later in Carrera Speedsters. Mr. Lazar died during a pre-race practice session at the National Lime Rock Fourth of July race in 1959 when his car veered off track and rolled four times. Harry Blanchard was from Greenwich, Connecticut and was the owner of the Blanchard Automotive Corporation. Mr. Blanchard was dyed in the wool Porsche enthusiast and racer. In 1959, he won the SCCA National Production Sports Car Championship. Also in 1959, he drove an RSK to 8th place in the first and only Formula One Grand Prix at Sebring. He died in Argentina in 1960 when the RSK he was driving hit a concrete abutment. Mr. Jennings said Glenn Lazar and Harry Blanchard were two Porsche enthusiasts and racers who died at the wheel of their Porsches, doing what they loved best racing. Mr. Jennings founded the award to honor two of the finest dedicated sportsmen and Porsche production sports car racing drivers. The recipient is a true Porsche Enthusiast and an outstanding member of PCA. The recipient is an exemplary participant in Region activities and shows initiative in support and organization of ongoing activities and the development of new activities. Mark has proved himself to be truly deserving of this nomination by his selflessness and devotion of time and effort to the continuance of our club, its membership, and activities. We as a club are privileged to have one in our midst who is willing to undertake these tasks. Great going Mark and thank you!
