Tri-State Cruiser 3rd Qtr 2007 The Club Picnic and this year we didn t need a fire!! By: Tanya Woodford Newsletter Editor email: woodfordmt@hotmail.com Our 2007 Club Picnic was held on Sunday, September 16 th at Cowan Lake State Park. It was a beautiful day with a cooler start but warmed up in the afternoon. We had quite a spread of food including grilled hamburgers and hotdogs and Clarksville Jambalaya. After we filled our stomachs we went on a poker run cruise which included going through a covered bridge and driving around the Ft. Ancient area. We were fortunate to have several Chevelles on the cruise as well John and Debbie s classic truck. (Ok he brought the truck to pick up El Camino parts at Mike s after the picnic so that counts also ). The highlight of the picnic was the debut of Rick and Amy Shoemaker s 1967 Chevelle. Rick drove his Chevelle to the picnic and he participated in the poker run cruise. We all were very excited to see it on the road and know that Rick and Amy will have lots of fun touring in their new car! Missing at this year s picnic was our Vice President and his wife, Randy and Alma Champlin. It was rumored that Randy grew ill because the picnic location was closest ever to his West Union home, but you know how rumors go they were greatly missed and we know their Chevelle would have had a great time on the poker run cruise. See the pictures of our fun!!! I N S I D E T H I S ISSUE Club Picnic Continued on page 4 The Latest and Greatest: 2008 Officers Dave Our October meeting was held at Quaker Steak and Lube in Milford. Feature Article Woodward Dream Cruise By: John Singer Editor s Note: John sent me an email on an article he did on Woodward a few years ago. He has also included some pictures of beautiful Chevelles. (Like we have ever seen an ugly one ) Thanks, John, for writing this article and send in the pictures! WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE 3rd Saturday in August each year (since 1995) What is it? The Woodward Dream Cruise is an annual celebration of the glory days of cruising in the American hot rods of the 40 s and 50 s and the muscle cars of the 60 s and 70 s at the home of the American automobile Detroit, Michigan. Where is it? On Woodward Avenue (Blvd.) (S.R. 1) from 8 Mile Road, Fernbank area to 16 miles north in Pontiac, Michigan on the north side of Detroit. Woodward Ave. is an 8-lane divided highway where drive-in restaurants, cruising and street racing were part of everyday life until the 70 s. Statistics The Dream Cruise has grown into the largest automotive event in the world with approximately 40,000 cruisers and in excess of 1.7 million people from 4 continents. People line the route from daylight to dark in lawn chairs about 8 deep for 17 miles on both sides of the street. Every imaginable kind of vehicle can be found but it is dominated by hot rods and muscle cars with spectators urging the drivers to do burnouts in strategically placed watered down areas of pavement. Live TV and radio coverage for most of the day and vendors of all types including all automotive manufacturers are present in dominant fashion. History The Dream Cruise began as a small get together sponsored by one town on the strip Fernbank. As it grew many more towns jumped on the bandwagon and since has become the event that it is. Woodward Avenue was known far and wide as a street racing Mecca since the 40 s and became the unofficial developmental proving grounds of the American muscle car of the 60 s. It has been rumored that GM, Ford and Chrysler engineers experimented with their designs unofficially on Friday and Saturday nights and snuck the cars back to the factory by Monday morning. Pictures Below are just a small sample of the cars at Woodward. I m partial to Chevelles as you can see. John Singer TSC Member # 013 ACES Member # 5751 Continued on page 3 TSC Cruiser Page 2 Q3 2007
