3 Product overview 3. Operating principle Two fixed stepper motors drive a toothed belt arrayed in an H shape. The toothed belt moves the Y-axis (traverse) and the slide located on the Y-axis (traverse) in a -dimensional space. A controller calculates the position of the slide. The controlled interaction of the motors results in the corresponding movement of the slide. Motor X-axis Y-axis Motor 3 4 Motor Motor Guide pulleys (for toothed belt) Toothed belt Fig. 3.3 3 Y-axis (traverse) 4 Slide units of the Y-axis The depicted directions of movement of the Y-axis slide refer to the directions of rotation of the motor of the functional principle shown. 3.3 Permitted mounting position Warning The use of the planar surface gantry without a motor brake in a mounting position other than horizontal can result in uncontrolled movements of the attached load. Freely movable loads can result in injury to people and damage to the peripherals of the planar surface gantry. Use a planar surface gantry without motor brake (EXCM-30- -ST- ) exclusively in a horizontal mounting position. 4 Mounting 4 Mounting 4. Safety instructions Warning Unexpected movement of the product. Risk of injury from electric shock, impact, crushing. Before working on the product, switch off the power supply and secure it against being switched on again. When lifting the product, perform the following measures: Secure movable components with transport locks to prevent unexpected movement. Observe the product weight. Observe the position of the centre of gravity. When mounting the product, perform the following measures: Secure the product in a professional manner. Only use the mounting components from Festo. Make sure the mounting surface is sufficiently strong to absorb the maximum forces. 4. Preparation 4.. Fitting space The installation space required for the product depends on the following factors: Stroke of the X- and Y-axes ( www.festo.com/catalogue) Attachment position and type of motor Sufficient clearance for movement of the axes and possible attachment components (Z-axis) 4.. Mounting surface The mounting surface must exhibit the following characteristics: torsionally rigid free of stress flat bearing surface (flatness 0. mm/m²) Sufficient strength to absorb the maximum forces sufficient attachment to absorb the maximum forces ( 4..4 Profile mountings ) Festo EXCM-30-EN 605b English

4 Mounting 4..3 Types of mounting The product can be mounted in ways: with profile mountings or with adjusting kits. Profile mountings (Standard) Profile mountings kits are only intended for mounting the product. Note Profile mountings are not adjustable. To align the product and maintain the limit values, some actions are required. Reordering adjusting kits ( www.festo.com/catalogue). 4 Mounting 4.3 Installation Note If there are temperature differences between the product and the mounting surface: Adapt the temperature of the product to the temperature of the mounting surface. Observe the permissible ambient temperatures ( A.5 Operating and storage conditions). Note The planar surface gantry is delivered from factory with a backlash-free setting. When mounting the planar surface gantry make sure that it is not distorted, because if it is, it can change this setting. Follow the subsequently described procedure for attachment of the planar surface gantry to avoid tension. Caution Inappropriate mounting material can cause the planar surface gantry to loosen and fall down if the mounting position is not horizontal, which can result in injuries. Make sure that the mounting material used (socket head screws of the profile mountings) ensures sufficient strength in combination with the mounting surface. If mounting kits are covered by the Y-axis (traverse), this can be moved manually. To do this, remove the motors ( 4.4. Mounting/dismantling motor) or release the holding brake. 6 Festo EXCM-30-EN 605b English

4 Mounting 4.3. Aligning and mounting the product (profile mounting). Make sure that the product and mounting surface have the same temperature.. Prepare the mounting surface ( 4.. Mount the profile covers. 3 Fig. 4.5 4 Festo EXCM-30-EN 605b English 3

4 Mounting 4.4 Optional work 4.4. Mounting/dismantling motor Note Third-party motors with a driving torque that is too high can damage the product. When using third-party motors observe the following: Maximum permissible driving torque ( www.festo.com/catalogue) Mounting dimensions of motor interface ( www.festo.com/catalogue) Suitable combination of coupling, coupling housing and motor flange Fastening principle 8 7 6 3 3 4 5 4 Drill hole clamping screw coupling access Countersunk screw 3 Sleeve 4 Threaded pin Fig. 4.6 5 Motor 6 Coupling 7 Drive pinion 8 Drive cover If you ordered the planar surface gantry without motor, the motor attachment kit comprising the entries, 3 and 4 (two each) is included. The coupling is not part of the scope of delivery. 4 Festo EXCM-30-EN 605b English

4 Mounting Motors with a holding brake must be removed for mounting the product. Dismantling the motor. Disconnect the cables 3 from the motor.. Unscrew and remove the headed pins. For motor attachment underneath: Secure motor from falling. 3. Disassemble motor. 3 Fig. 4.7 Mount motor 4. Install motor. 5. Tighten the threaded pins (tightening torque. Nm). 6. Connect the cables 3 to the motor. 3 Fig. 4.8 4.4. Adapting cable outlets The position of the cable outlets is dependent on the design ordered of the product. If necessary, it can be adapted subsequently to the installation situation. The following representations represent an example for the design without motor brake, motor attachment position underneath, cable outlets to the front (EXCM-30- -ST-B ). The procedure applies correspondingly for deviating designs. Festo EXCM-30-EN 605b English 5

4 Mounting. Dismantling the motor ( Fig. 4.7 page 5).. Turn motor into the desired position. Rotation by 80 Both motors can be rotated 80 independently of each other and while maintaining their mounting location. Rotation by 90 By interchanging the motors, both can be rotated 90 each. 3. Mount motor ( Fig. 4.7 page 5) Fig. 4.9 4.5 Attachment components Note Observe the following when designing and mounting attachment components: Reduced freedom of movement through parts of the product Maximum screw-in depth on the slide of 5 mm Documentation of the attachment component Limits of the product ( A Technical appendix) Attachment components are directly attached to the slide of the Y-axis. Precise alignment is carried out by means of centring holes and threads. 4 Mounting 4.5. Remove the protection against particles for EXCM-30-...-P8 To adjust the end stops (threaded pins), the protection against particles has to be removed for the P8 version.. Remove profile covers (X-axes).. Remove the screws on both sides of the protection against particles. 3. Carefully pull the protection against particles out of the slide unit. 4. Remove the slot nuts 3. 5. Re-install the protection against particles after setting the end stops (threaded pins) in reverse order. Tighten the screws with Loctite 43 adhesive (torque. Nm). 6. Mount the profile covers (X-axes). 3 Fig. 4. 4.5. Setting end stops of the Y-axis To reduce the risk of collisions between attachment elements and parts of the planar surface gantry, the stroke of the Y-axis can be adjusted accordingly by means of adjustable end stops (threaded pins). Various thread pin pairs are included in the scope of delivery. Slide Threaded pin Fig. 4. Threaded pin Minimum screw-in depth [mm] M4 x 0 (mounted) 6 M4 x 30 / 40 / 50 (supplied separately) Tab. 4.4 The positioning accuracy of the product is dependent on a correct homing. This is only possible with a hard, mechanical stop. Homing on the motor side should be preferred. Only use the end stops included in the delivery (threaded pins) do not use elastic materials.
