Tram-train systems in Europe and realization in Szeged-Hódmezővásárhely Dr. Zoltán Ádám Németh Szeged Transport Ltd., directorial agent
What is a tram-train? Karlsruhe
What is a tram-train? Kassel
What is a tram-train? Chemnitz
From technical point of view a tram-train project is one of the most difficult and complicated. In this case we are not building an extension, rather a new operation in uncertain legal environment. There are several in Europe, however there is no two, that are identical. E.g. only within Kassel there are three separate tram-train operations with different parameters.

PREPARATION OF THE PROJECT 2007: pre-feasibility study 2012: detailed feasibility study 2014-15: Authorization plans and review of detailed feasibility study Environmental authorization in Autumn 2015. Authorization by the Railway Authority in Autumn 2016. 2016: Auxilliary Authorization plans and review of detailed feasibility study (reconstruction of railway line 135) Planned execution: 2017 (?), end: until 2020 (?) Planned operators: MÁV & MÁV-Start (Hungarian State Rwy.)
PROJEKT EXECUTION For the start first the planned parameters of the tram-train vehicle was needed to be specified. By May 2015. with the leadership of the National Transport Authority there was a concept.
PROJEKT EXECUTION In 2015 state owned MÁV Zrt. became the operator for the new tram section in Hódmezővásárhely as well as MÁV remained the operator of the line 135; and MÁV-START started the procurement for the vehicle For 8(+4 optional) vehicle In Szeged SZKT remained the operator (Municipality owned).
PROJEKT EXECUTION Economical modelling was made for determining a new system for track usage fee for tram-train, as well as to determine the ownership of the parts, actualization of CBA. Preliminary negotiations are between National Development Ministry (who is ordering the suburban service in Hungary), MÁV, SZKT, Municipality of Szeged and Hódmezővásárhely about the local traffic operations and tariff system.
Operator: MÁV-Start Modern tram-train vehicle max. length: 40 m width: 2,65/2,4 m (narrow at platform level) min. capacity: 90 seats max. velocity: 50/100 km/h operation: tram: 600 V comfort: entry level: railway: diesel heating and air condition 30/55 cm
PROJEKT EXECUTION The procurement obtained authorization from Transport Authority in 2016. Winner is Stadler Vossloh (Valencia). Price: 6,4 M Euro / vehicle (w/o toilet)
PROJEKT EXECUTION The new tram-train wheel profile is also ready.
IN FRONT OF THE PROJECT EXECUTION Financing: Not yet clarified (two major changes so far) Operation: Tariff system (currently in negotiation between MÁV- START, DAKK, SZKT, Municipality of Szeged, Municipality of HMV, National Development Ministry) Modifying the existing interurban bus routes in order to change to tram-train; MÁV tram-track operation practice (SZKT MÁV cooperation); MÁV-START tram operation practice; Passenger Information Systems integration Vehicle purchase: Contract get in effect; Authoriation Delivery Auxilliary devices (washing, mill, cranes, etc.)
IN FRONT OF THE PROJECT EXECUTION Track planning and authorization: Authorization of the reconstruction of line 135 and Szeged depot; Auxilliary utility planning Common operation rules (MÁV, MÁV-START, SZKT) Tram-train specific signalling Execution: Utility replacement (? 2017) Construction of the tram sections (? 2017-18) Reconstruction of line 135 (? 2018-19) Depot (? 2018-19) Vehicles (? 2019-20)
