They are installed in passenger cars with drive-by-wire and e-vehicles. HELLA distinguishes between two different position measurement technologies with regards to pedal sensors. Alongside the established contactless inductive position sensor (CIPOS ), HELLA s highly accurate, robust and advanced small packaged in-house position technology, HELLA also offers the traditional potentiometer technology. Independent of the APS technology, the sensor is designed so that the pedal, the generation of the pedal force, and the sensor are integrated within one modular design. Thereby the design and the haptics of the pedal can be adapted according to the customer s requirements. HELLA's pedal sensors are available for pendant and floor mounting.
HOW IT WORKS The position sensor (CIPOS or potentiometer technology) is part of the accelerator pedal and delivers the driver s wish to drive faster or to reduce the speed to the engine electronics by measuring the pedal position. These are processed in an electronic evaluation unit and then transmitted to the control unit in the form of direct voltage. The control unit evaluates the signal and forwards the respective pulse to the throttle valve actuator, for example. The characteristics of the voltage signal depend on how the accelerator pedal is activated. The application of alternating voltage to the transmission coil produces a magnetic field which induces voltages in the receiver coils. A current is also induced in the rotor conductor loops which in turn influences the magnetic field of the receiver coils. Voltage amplitudes are produced depending on the position of the rotor relative to the receiver coils in the stator.
