Energy Solved Enhanced off-grid reliability Energy Management brought to you by NEC XON The advanced control and monitoring of alternative energy sources, integrated with the latest battery technologies, are essential for telecoms operators - reducing life cycle costs and improving quality of service, resulting in increased profit margins. Operators are able to meet their energy and operational efficiency requirements by intelligently managing unreliable and unstable grid power supply, generators and renewable energy sources with high efficiency Hybrid Power Solutions and Smart Battery Technologies such as Li-Ion (LiFePo or NCA technologies). The HSS (Hybrid Storage Solutions) developed by NEC XON serve to optimise generators by reducing running times, ensuring operation in each specified power band and therefore reducing fuel consumption and glazing (which are side effects from using lead acid battery based storage systems). The very fast and linear charge capabilities of the Li-Ion battery technology ensures a smaller footprint and multiple cycles per day. The long life cycle of Li-Ion technologies also contributes to high return on investment as well as a significant reduction in OPEX. The overall efficiencies of Li-Ion batteries ensure that no energy is wasted. Making them the ideal solution for optimising generators. Introduction to the hss Key Benefits How can I reduce OPEX on my network and Guarantee uptime? Highly modular and custom Hybrid Power Solutions tailored to customer needs. Smart battery technologies used - PLC controlled and monitored via high speed Modbus RS485 communication. Proprietary protection mechanisms implemented to ensure uptime under adverse conditions. Li-Ion charge rates 0.4C - 1.0C - application dependent. 0.4C - SAFT Li ion - (NCA). Up to 1C - NEC Li Ion - (LiFePo). Average: 0.1C to 0.5C competitors - application dependent. Up to 9x faster charging than Lead Acid technologies. Multiple deep cycles per day - smaller footprint required. Linear charge curves - loading gensets in their powerband for the entire charge cycle - ensuring most efficient L/kWh conversion rates. 5-10 year Life span. Scalable and modular. More temperature tolerant than Lead Acid - less cooling required. Industry leading generator and rectifier control with patented Maximum Power Point Tracking and Anti-stall algorithms. Generator is dynamically optimised for optimum power utilisation. Generator can be kept alive by the HSS controller in Limp-Mode in cases of drastic loss of power. Anti stalling generator running at reduced power. Fuel efficient - DG run shorter increments - above 60% loading - maximum efficiency possible, no glazing, no dummy loads and no PSOC. Less wear and tear, less maintenance. Less re-fueling and site visits. Full remote control and alarming. Intelligent cooling, PLC controlled - both Active and Passive cooling. Integrated IP Camera. Charge with Grid, Solar, Wind or DG or any combination of all.

Energy Solved The HSS (Hybrid Storage Solutions) are customised to customer requirements and they come in 3 main categories: Li-Ion Storage Ideal for generator optimised sites due to constant generator loading for the entire charge cycle, ensuring best fuel efficiency possible. Ideal for sites with unreliable grid and several short failures per day. Due to fast recharge times, generator runtime could be eliminated. Ideal for sites with limited space due to high power density, deep cycling ability and multiple cycles per day, a very small battery bank can drive very large loads, provided a generator or partial grid is available to recharge. Ideal in very low and higher temperature environments SAFT for example can operate between -40 C and +75 C, though in HSS we carefully control internal battery temperatures to ensure extended battery life. Not ideal for sites requiring very long battery autonomies, where the generator must be started - too costly. Li-Ion Storage Solution In the standard outdoor enclosure, up to 10 x SAFT 77Ah modules can be fitted for a total capacity of 770Ah. Up to 5 x NEC 48V100 kits can be installed for a total capacity of 500Ah. For larger battery banks, a separate outdoor cabinet is required. Each Li-Ion battery is monitored and controlled by PLC. The PLC automates start-up, by bringing individual batteries on line and ensures that all batteries are balanced and equalised before allowing them to go into full charge mode or take load. The PLC protects the batteries against overcharge or overload, much faster than the rectifier controller can do, usually without dropping the site load.

Lead Acid Storage Ideal for sites only requiring storage for back-up, catering for occasional grid failures. 18h - 24h recharge times required. Ideal for daily cycle solar sites with grid back-up. Not ideal for daily cycling on solar only sites. If solar is used with grid or generator in Hybrid, to top up daily, a reasonable life expectancy is possible, provided Lead Acid technologies such as Flooded Tubular Plate or OPzV are utilised. Not ideal for generator only sites, due to the charge behaviour of Lead Acid batteries tapering off gradually - last 30% of capacity could take 8h - 16h to restore, wasting fuel. If PSOC (Partial State of Charge) regimes are followed, it can bring about some fuel savings, but is not good for the batteries. (Sulfation / memory effect / rock forming). Regular full charge cycles wastes fuel and could break down sulfation, but these deposits form a build-up at the bottom of the lead acid battery, reducing capacity and causing early death. Not ideal for sites with several short grid failures per day apart from heat, micro cycling is one of the biggest enemies to Lead Acid battery technologies. Lead Acid Storage Solution Various enclosures are available for Lead Acid Storage systems, depending on the sizes of the battery banks. Multiple small outdoor enclosures can be stacked next to one another. Large drop down solutions with three compartments are also available. Normally a 6m Container partitioned for a Generator room, Battery room and Equipment room. Individual battery string monitoring. Up to 2 Generators plus grid can be controlled. Li-Ion/Lead Acid Hybrid Storage If properly specified, one can have the best of both worlds with a Li-Ion / Lead Acid Hybrid Battery Bank. Ideal for sites which experience both several short grid failures per day and occasional long outages less frequently. Li-Ion will handle multiple short outages and charge back between subsequent short failures. During longer outages, the Lead Acid battery will be enabled to provide extended autonomy. Once the grid is restored, Li-Ion will charge back rapidly, ready for the next short grid Failure. The Lead Acid battery may take as long as 24h to recharge which is possible since the much smaller Li-Ion Battery Bank would handle most of the cycles, both battery technologies could last for years. Li-Ion/Lead Acid Hybrid Storage Solution Priority and non Priority switching possible on all configurations. Solar and Wind Modules can be fitted for renewable energy power on all configurations. AC loads, DC loads or Mixed AC & DC loads possible on all configurations. Li-Ion dimensioning based on load size and average duration of short Grid Failures. Lead Acid dimensioning based on size of load and long outage autonomy required before generator will be started or system shutdown will happen.

The HSS Hybrid Storage Solution A fully integrated AC or DC / AC and DC energy storage platform NEC XON HSS (Hybrid Storage Solution) is a flexible, configurable and fully integrated turnkey solution with modular and scalable design that can be rapidly deployed to enable telecommunications operators and tower companies to reduce costs and increase plant efficiency. With multiple energy storage technology options scaling to approximately 30kW loads, the NEC XON HSS Hybrid Storage Solution can be easily configured to meet customer s exact power and energy requirements. For tower companies, we provide independent power feeds for up to 6 operators, with independent energy measurements on each power feed. Extensive data logging is done both on-site as well as offsite. Reports with trending data are available at the click of a button if our Adroit Software platform is used at the NOC (Network Operating Centre). The HSS systems are remotely configurable and our engineers can provide remote assistance from anywhere in the world. NEC XON Control System Several Generator Controllers, as long as they have a Modbus RS485 port, can be made to work with HSS The Generator Controller and Modbus based Fuel sensors are connected to a Modbus RS485 to Modbus TCP converter and can either connect to the HSS controller via WiFi or Modbus TCP by cable. The SAFT batteries are connected directly to the High Speed Modbus RS485 port of the PLC. For NEC batteries a CAN Bus to RS485 converter connects batteries to the PLC. The Rectifier controller connects to the Modem Router directly via Modbus TCP. The PLC connects to the Modem/ Router directly. A PC Stick connects to the Modem Router via WiFi (Remote Access). A Web Camera connects to the Modem/Router. The Modem Router is the gateway to the NOC. HSS Energy Storage Several container options available from small 2 door cabinets to large 12m x 2.4m x 2.4m containers. Customised according to customer requirements. All equipment can also be mounted in equipment rooms utilising indoor cabinets or customised battery racks. Several Li-Ion technologies can be integrated with HSS. Custom PLC software provides the Interface between various Smart battery types and the HSS controller. NEC XON recommend certain battery technologies supplied by NEC and some of our technology partners, but can potentially accommodate customers requesting different batteries from other suppliers. Information about our technology partners available upon request. HSS Power Conversion System The Power Conversion System of the HSS is based on the Enatel Synergi Power System. High Efficiency 2kW or 3kW Rectifier modules can be fitted 4 modules per 1U shelve and multiple shelves can be combined. High Efficiency 2kW Solar MPPT modules can be fitted 4 modules per 1U shelve and multiple shelves can be combined. 400VDC solar input possible. High Efficiency 2kW Wind modules can be fitted 4 modules per 1U shelve and multiple shelves can be combined. Units are paralleled to achieve the correct capacity required per wind turbine. DC output voltages available are 48V / +24V and +12V. Various modular Inverter types can be integrated for AC loads. Extensive Analogue Inputs, Digital inputs and outputs available. Synergi controller used on generator sites. Standard SM36 controller used for other configurations.

Advanced Alternative Energy Solutions Although HSS targets combined AC and DC systems up to a 30kW average load, NEC XON can also provide larger solutions not described in this brochure. For AC loads between 25kW and 710kW, please refer to our brochure on DSS - Distributed Storage Solution. Modular 85kWh Li-Ion Storage blocks can be combined for up to 510kWh. For AC loads larger than 710kW, please refer to our brochure on GSS - Grid Storage Solution. Due to the high power density of the Prismatic NEC Li-Ion Cells, 7MWh of storage is possible per 50ft container inclusive of HVAC and fire suppression systems. Several such containers can be combined in a single GSS. GSS and DSS units are supplied as complete drop down units for connection to the grid. Further integration with Solar farms, Grid Tie Inverters and Generators are provided by NEC XON in Africa. For customers not hosting their own NOC, NEC XON could provide the Service via our own NOC - based in Midrand RSA - as well as provide Web Access via Wingu.
