ALIGNING SKILLING AND LICENSING THE DISCONNECT BETWEEN A LICENCE AND COMPETENCE Jillian Dielesen

Licence, which includes both a theory test and a practical assessment. Passing a practical driving assessment may include: - Demonstrating how to couple and uncouple a semi trainer - Checking security of spare wheels, air lines and electrical connections - Ensuring any load is correctly fastened

Truck maintenance Load and unload goods Load restraint Fatigue management Workplace Health and Safety Communication Spatial awareness Problem solving

How to follow procedures and policies of the company Check and know what all the gauges mean on the dash Check all fluids know how to fill up if needed Check all hook up points, turntables, ring feeders, airlines and taps Check light leads connected and all lights working Check tyres for wear and air pressure. What is the wear line? What pressure do you need in your steerers, and your drive tyres on a highway and dirt roads? How to change a tyre, ten stud or spider rim Check under your truck for no fluid leaks All windows and mirrors clean. Make sure you have wheel brace and jack and spare tyre If loaded check Check straps, chains are tight and placed correctly Check the load restraints are in the correct place on the load Check load has not moved. Check tool boxes for load restraint equipment for the job ahead. As you pull off check all tyres are moving and not locked on A good driver needs to be aware of truck position on the road Stopping distances with the weights you have on the back of truck The ability to read the motorists on the highway and what they may do Travelling speeds for the road temperature you are on. Understanding the weight distribution of the load Top heavy means really slow around corners What is the height you can load on your trailer What is the width you can load on a non permitted vehicle How to read permits and understand what they mean What flagging and signs are needed If doing oversize loads & when do you need a pilot When do you need to put a flashing light on your roof Do you need a flashing light at the rear of you trailer How to work with a pilot What do wig wags mean Correct two way radio procedures Basic mechanical knowledge or diagnostic ability Dealing with clients calmly and professionally How to fill out "log" books, work diaries How to fill out and check paperwork that accompanies loads Understanding certain loads you cannot cart unless you have the licence required. Controlled waste items and what they are, needs a controlled waste licence. Dangerous goods what quantities can be carried before you need a DG licence What weighs can be carried on a semi, truck and dog, B double, road train. What weights can be put on axles with different sizes tyres! How to use different trailers. How to use and load an extendable trailer. How to use a trailer with container pins, where to put the blocks. How to hook up road trains with dollies. How to widen trailers and floats. Check if your trailer has a block, do you need a ball race to tow that trailer. How to lower ramps on a drop deck, hydraulic and electric ones. How to drive all sorts of machinery onto a drop deck or float How to paddock load a tipper for grain carting How to tip an end tipper How to use a side tipper without destroying your fuel tank Communication - Deal with customers (and prime contractor customers, where subcontracted) both office and yard based (ie on different "levels"), and written communication (job sheets, fatigue paperwork, vehicle fault reporting) Problem solving - Mechanical issues with vehicles, incorrect loading/delivery information - in particular need to be able to suggest possible solutions and talk through with others Spatial awareness - relates to vehicle size/manoeuvrability, other traffic and to load placement Basic maths - load dimensions, weight distribution, restraints required, calculation of fatigue hours and work/rest over extended time periods

Licence? Is that enough? Qualification? Takes time, money and commitment! Experience? Takes time, money and commitment!
