how to use your automatic gate operator Before using your Automatic Gate always look to see if there is any person, pet or other obstruction in the path of the gate. Always wait for the gate to fully open before driving or walking through. If the gate begins to close while you are driving through stop the vehicle, do not attempt to beat the gate, this is extremely dangerous. If the gate is obstructed while moving it will reverse direction to allow the obstruction to be freed or if the obstruction prevents the gate from moving in the first place it will cut off to prevent burn out. Avoid close proximity to areas where fingers or hands could be pinched or you can be trapped between the gate and post or fence. Stay clear of the path of the gate at all times. Never allow children to play with the gate or the gate controls, explain to children the dangers involved. Keep remote controls where children or any other unauthorized users have no access to them. If you have a seperate gate for Pedestrian entry please use this if you are on foot rather than the Automatic Vehicle Gate. In the event you sell the property, make sure the new owners have a copy of these instructions. If you lose the instructions they can be downloaded from: www.grantsautomation.com.au. If a photocell is used this will prevent the gate from closing on a vehicle If the gate is closing and the photocells light beam is broken, then the gate will reverse open and remain there for as long as the photocells light beam is broken. Once the photocell is cleared the gate will close after the auto-close delay or after its own delay if this option is selected. If a ground loop vehicle detector has been installed then any vehicle approaching the gate from within the property will open the gate automatically without the use of a remote control or other control device. The gate will then close automatically once the ground loop and photocells are cleared and close delay has timed out. Any person walking on the ground loop will NOT open the gate but a bicycle may do if the ground loop is set up to. - 1 -

how the controls work Button A will open the gate and then after a preset time (30 seconds unless changed) the gate will close automatically. Button B will open the gate and hold it open until Button B is clicked again. Buttons C and D are spares and can be programmed to either open a garage door fitted with an e-gate receiver unit or open the gate part way to allow pedestrian access. Adding New Remote controls to the operator Using a remote control that already works on your gate pressing Buttons A and C together will cause the operator to start beeping. If you press one button slightly before the other the gate may open instead, so close it and have another try. Once the operator is beeping press button A on the new remote control and the beeping should respond with a faster beep for a second and then go off. Test the new remote to see if it opens the gate. To get Button B to work firstly press buttons A and D together on a working remote control and the operator should start beeping, now press button B on the new remote control and the operator should respond as before and this button should now work. To get buttons C or D to open the gate part way for pedestrian entry press buttons B and D on a working remote control and the operator will start beeping, then press either button C or D and this will now be set for pedestrian entry. This process can also be used to remove buttons from any working remote control. The e-gate remote control has been designed to fit on a key ring and can be unclipped quickly with the quick release clip if needed. To use the remote control hold it up vertically or let it hang upside down from a key ring. It doesn t need to be pointed in any directly like a TV remote. Either of the four buttons need only be pressed for a second and released. - 2 -

how to manually release the gate To manually release the Operator so it can be opened by hand firstly open the weather cover then using the key provided unlock the Manual release door and open it. The gate will now open freely. To re-engage it, close and lock the door and move the gate along a bit until the operator clicks in. maintenance The track for the gate must be kept clear from falling branches and leaves from nearby trees and any gravel, dirt or other material that may built up against the track and prevent the gate from operating. For Battery operated versions the battery should be replaced every 5 years or sooner if it has ever been run flat. The operator uses two 12V 2.2Ah Gel Batteries that are available form Grant s Automation, alarm suppliers, some automotive parts suppliers, electronic and battery shops. The battery is contained within the operator itself, which can be accessed by removing the lid. It s also a good idea to put moth balls or other insect repellant in the base of the operator to prevent Ants Nests, Slugs, Snails or Lizards from causing damage to the operator. DO NOT apply anything directly to the Electronic Circuit Board, Reed Sensor or Motor Encoder as it may cause immediate damage or cause long term deterioation of these components. - 3 -

changing the remote control battery The remote control uses a 12V Thin Battery 8mm diameter x 28mm long L828 type. Undo the screw in the back of the remote control with a small Phillips screw driver then lift the back half up as far as you can slide it forward to free it from the front half without having to remove the key ring. Then seperate the back half from the front Now carefully replace the battery without disturbing the electric circuit board inside as this is can easily fall out and is a little fiddly to get back in. Once the new battery is in place re-fit the back half in reverse order to how it was removed and replace the screw. - 5 -

what happens if there is a power cut? Battery operated versions will not be effected by a power cut unless it is longer than a few hours, then the gate should be manually operated until the power is restored and the battery has charged. Over night charging is best. The Control Board charges the Battery Automatically. If the battery is left flat for an extended period it may become faulty and will need to be replaced. For non-battery versions if the power is removed from the Gate Operator it will not work so must be manually released. Once power is restored the following will happen: If the gate is closed - when next activated it will open normally. If the gate is FULLY or PARTLY OPEN, when first powered up it will slowly close. Then when next activated it will open normally. If the Gate is FULLY or PARTLY OPEN and a 7-day timer or other device is holding the gate OPEN it will remain in the power up position until the hold open device closes the gate, it will then slowly close. trouble shooting Operator not working at all - check power cord is plugged in and switched ON. Check fuse or circuit breaker for the gate is ON. For Battery versions if the power has been turned OFF and the battery has run flat the power must be turned ON and the operator left to charge over night before it is used. If power is OK check all control devices are working properly. Photocells should be aligned properly, ground loop detector may need adjusting, 7-day timer may need adjusting or any other devices that can hold the gate open may prevent the gate from closing if they aren t working properly. Battery Powered Operator running very slowly - check power cord is plugged in and switched ON. Check fuse or circuit breaker for the gate is ON. If either of these are OFF turn them ON and leave the the gate over night to fully charge. If they are ON then check the trickle charge cabling to the gate and repair where necessary. If cabling is OK the battery may need replacing. Solar Powered Operator running very slowly - the solar panel may not be getting enough sun to keep the battery charged. Check the Solar Panel is getting adaquate sunlight and cabling is in good condition. An extra solar panel and storage battery may be required and/or the solar panel repositioned so it gets more sun. Remote control range drops some times - most likely caused by interference from some other device in the area using a similar frequency. Installing an external antenna can minimize the effects of interference, other wise if this doesn t help the frequency of the remote controls should be changed. Each remote control will need to be changed for a differnent frequency along with the receiver module plugged into the e-gate control or stand alone receiver board(s). The receiver module is a small yellow board that plugs into the main board near where the antenna is wired in. Power should be removed form the operator before a receiver module is changed. Both the remote controls and receiver modules come in either 433.92Mhz or 315Mhz, if you have interference problems with one frequency we can send you remote controls of the other frequency, which normally solves the problem. - 6 -
