The BEAMA Guide to Electric Vehicle Infrastructure

Published May 2012 Industry guidance for the use of existing and dedicated EV charging systems Provides clarification on what is available today for EV drivers to use. Focus on Safety and energy management Contents includes: Modes of charging Plug and socket-outlets types Domestic and Public applications Energy management Overview of current standards

Charging Modes

Charging Modes

Plugs & Sockets

Are there products available today? YES!! Ranges to match all EV / PHEV vehicles & locations. Through your traditional channels

Things to consider Installation is to normal regulations covered by eg BS7671 and to IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment. The dedicated EV circuit is best installed to cater up to 32A whatever charging method is being installed For external locations, charge points must ensure suitable IP of socket is maintained with plug in place. Remember requirement for all sockets in domestic location must be shuttered. A tethered cable charge point may be needed in some circumstances. Some form of communication cabling may be required often this could be Cat5 or similar whatever EV outlet type is selected Choice of RCD

Summary of available equipment for a dedicated EV charging circuit

Installers Installing Electric vehicle chargers is not rocket science. Any competent, qualified electrician should have the necessary skills. It is more about: 1. Understanding the codes of practice. The IET, BEAMA, SMMT have all been working hard over the last two years to publish guides and Codes of Practice, they are an invaluable source of information and will make life much easier for the installer. Such questions as: What level of circuit protection is required? Understanding the earthing implications for various types of building supply. Where should a EV charger be sited in the residential environment 2.Often the responsibility for advising the customer will rest with the installer, particularly in a smaller commercial or residential situation. He should therefore fully familiarise himself with the not just the technical issues but also gain an understanding of the market, how it is developing, the modes of charging and implications of power needs v cost implications and reduced charging times v available power. He can than offer his customer good advice from where they can make an informed decision

Specifiers Often the responsibility for specifying the right charging infrastructure lays with the M+E or Services Engineer. What does he need to consider? 1. Understanding the modes of charging. 1,2,3 and 4. Their attributes and limitations 2. What is the prime function of the specified chargers? Seems an obvious answer to charge electric vehicles. But how many and over what period of time. The charger installed to charge a car in 8 hours is completely different to a unit required to provide a full charge in say 30 minutes. Once this has been established the specifier can start to look at loads and power requirements. Even the smallest 3kW chargers will have an impact on the supply requirements. Multiply this by the number of units required say 20 and you now have a very significant additional load on the system. 3. What are the local planning requirements? Some local authorities now require a set minimum numbers of EV chargers to be included in a scheme to meet the rules 4. Does the scheme require a monitoring system, payment options, GPS uploads, maintenance reporting, etc. The Specifier can get help on all these issue by discussing them with any reputable EV manufacturer. Get it right first time, seek the experts advice

Training As the market grows the need for training (both specifiers and installers) becomes more and more important. The training on offer from independent bodies or EV manufacturers can vary wildly. When deciding on which training provider to use please consider: Is there a CPD element to the training? Your guarantee of non- commercial independently validated training on the EV market and its new requirements Some car makers require installers to be trained by the EV manufacturer to ensure that service levels and customer values are maintained and with enhanced warrantees. Remember installing EV chargers is not especially difficult but it does require a new way of thinking to advise the customer, avoid costly mistakes and provide the optimum service and value.

What Next? The Electric Vehicle could become part of the future Energy source of your home. Tell Magazine: If Hurricane Sandy taught us anything, it s that people need backups to their home s electrical systems. For some people, power outages are a regular occurrence, and they can last anywhere from minutes to days. Wired: Hacked Nissan EVs power homes after Hurricane Sandy

What Next? It s not just Urban Cars

What Next? Charging on the Go Inductive Charging This technology will make it possible to use cable-free charging points in the future, for example for taxis, buses, company parking areas or parking places at home.
