SELF-ROTATING NOZZLE DOWNHOLE TOOLS FOR COIL TUBING DV For Removal of Scale, Plugs, Failed Linings and Internal Corrosion The DV is a waterblast tool designed specifically for downhole and pipeline applications with coil tubing units. The nozzle head is rotated by waterjet reaction force. The tool includes a high pressure water swivel with viscous fluid governor that controls rotation speed. A single high pressure seal provides leak-free operation, and easy maintenance. Rotating heads are designed with replaceable nozzle tips. By using only a few rotating jets, each jet is bigger, with hard-hitting power. Jets are efficient and clean recesses and irregular surfaces without damaging the well pipe. 1.0 INTRODUCTION These guidelines were prepared to provide the operator of the DMV Rotary Nozzle with the basic information needed to use and service this tool. All operators or service personnel responsible for the care of this equipment should be familiar with the information in this manual. It is recommended that each tool be inspected and serviced before each insertion downhole. WARNING: HIGH PRESSURE FLUID SYSTEMS ARE POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS AND ONLY COMPETENT AND TRAINED PERSONS SHOULD BE INVOLVED IN THE MAINTENANCE AND OPERATION OF THIS TOOL. If you have any questions or problems with this product, please contact the distributor you obtained the tool from, or the manufacturer: 2.0 DESCRIPTION StoneAge, Inc. 54 Girard Street Durango, CO 81303 970-259-2869 970-259-2868 FAX www.stoneagetools.com The DMV is a jet-reaction powered swivel. It was designed to convey high pressure fluid from a stationary line to a rotating nozzle head. Jet reaction force propels rotation. A thick viscous fluid fills the swivel and acts as a governor to control the rotation speed. The swivel is a straight flow-through design with a single high pressure face seal. It is capable of working pressures up to 10,000 psi, and flow rates up to 100 gpm. The measured flow capacity is Cv = 4.6 which means at 50 gpm the pressure drop is 120 psi, while at 100 gpm the pressure drop will be 475 psi. Made from 316L stainless steel, the unit is very rugged and compact. There are two technical limitations that effect these tools - balancing torque within the capabilities of the viscous fluid governor, and preventing overheating. Balancing Torque - The head is rotated by jet reaction force. Jet reaction torque is balanced by a viscous fluid governor to prevent overspeed. The tool will operate reliably over a range of +/- 25% of the design torque for a given head. If operated at flows or pressures greater than original specifications, the head will rotate too fast damaging seals and bearings. It is necessary to supply heads with several different offsets in order to operate over a wide range of conditions. Preventing Overheating - Viscous fluid braking performance depends on viscosity of the fluid, so braking is reduced at elevated temperatures. That s why the DTV and DMV nozzles are damaged when water flow is interupted downhole. Once the tool is allowed to get hot, rotation rate is too fast when water flow is resumed. The result is seal failure and burned up bearings. Therefore, some water flow to cool the tool is necessary at all times, when the tool is in an environment over 160 F. 3.0 SAFETY WARNING Operations with this equipment can be potentially dangerous if caution is not exercised prior to and during tool use. Please read and follow all of these instructions. 1.0 Only competent and trained persons should operate this equipment. is NOTE: It is recommended that all operating personnel be familiar with the "Recommended Practices for the use of Manually Operated High Pressure Water Jetting Equipment", which published by the Water Jet Technology Association.
2.0 This equipment should always be used with an operator controlled dump mechanism to release the high pressure water. 3.0 The immediate work area should be marked off to keep out untrained persons. 4.0 All personnel in the area should wear eye protection, and other protective clothing in accordance with specific conditions. 5.0 The tool should be securely supported. Strong back thrust is created by waterjets and these forces can become unbalanced if a nozzle should become plugged. 6.0 Inspect the equipment for visible signs of deterioration, damage, or improper assembly. Do not operate until repaired. Make sure all threaded connections are tight and leak free. 7.0 Check to see that all control functions work properly before going to high pressure. 8.0 If it is necessary to have a person work near the cleaning jets, then it is this person who should have control of the pressure dump mechanism. 4.0 PARTS LIST - DMV Rotary Nozzle NUMBER NAME QTY/ASSY.
