CASE STUDIES POWER FOR MINE CONSTRUCTION The client was constructing what was to become the second largest copper and gold mine in the world. The site was located in the middle of the Gobi Desert, one of the most remote places on earth with an extremely harsh climate. With no utility power available for the first years of development, the client would need temporary power to begin sinking the shaft to facilitate underground mining. Aggreko was selected to provide a 4MW temporary power package due to our experience and reputation for performing in adverse site conditions. Aggreko provided a standard six pack configuration consisting of five 1MW units plus HV transformer, modified for use in Arctic-like conditions. POWER FOR STAFF ACCOMMODATION AND ESSENTIAL FACILITIES Power was required for operations at a mine situated at an altitude of 4,400 metres in the Andes mountains. As well as the main mining operations, a reliable power supply was also required to ensure that more than 400 resident workers, housed in a base camp, were comfortable during the freezing conditions in winter. Aggreko supplied an 8MW / 11kV power package including operation and maintenance personnel to ensure 100% power availability to support mining activities and provide safety and comfort to the workers living there. POWER FOR REMOTE MINE WHERE GRID IS UNAVAILABLE Often mines are located in isolated areas where there is no grid connection or where it is too expensive to install a power line. Power was required for one such mine in Ghana, the Damang gold mine owned by Abosso Goldfields. Aggreko s capability to deliver power solutions in remote areas was well known to the customer. Within three weeks of signing the contract, the necessary equipment was mobilized, transported, installed and commissioned on site.
EARLY POWER BEFORE AVAILABILITY OF LOCAL GRID The client was unable to begin mining operations at a remote gold mine in Guatemala as construction of the grid line that was to power the mine was indefinitely delayed. Aggreko was asked to provide a quick solution so that production at the mine could begin without any further delay. At short notice Aggreko shipped and installed 8.8MW of power at 4.16kV to power the mine processing equipment for commissioning and later full operation of the ore processing equipment. POWER FOR EMERGENCY/BREAKDOWN COVERAGE Operated by Ashanti Goldfields in Guinea, the Siguiri gold mine had a problem when the mine s on-site generators broke down. The mining operations came to a halt as there was no other reliable source of power that could be made available quickly. Aggreko was contacted in this dire situation to provide a solution. Aggreko responded by air freighting a 3.2MVA power package within 3 days from receiving the initial call from the customer. The equipment was delivered to the airport at Conakry (the capital of Guinea) and then transported some 550 kilometers by road to the mine site in north-east Guinea. Aggreko personnel then installed and commissioned the power plant ensuring minimal downtime. The mine was back in business within a week of the SOS call to Aggreko. POWER FOR MINE EXPANSION The Sunrise Dam gold mine in Western Australia, owned by Anglo American needed an upgrade of its process mill as part of the mine expansion activities. Additional baseload power was needed on a short term basis to cater for the increased processing capacity. Aggreko installed a 4.8MW / 6.6kV temporary power station that fed directly into the Bus-Bar of the main power plant to meet the short term rise in power demand. The power package comprised of 6 x 1250kVA diesel generators, 1.3 km length of LV cables and service engineers to maintain and operate the equipment. Aggreko also carried out commissioning and management of a fuel control system on its generators. The generators were configured to start, automatically synchronise and run in parallel with the main power plant. "Aggreko are very professional and set their standards very high.
