WELCOME Welcome to our 21st annual sale. We are proud to offer an outstanding, even line of young sires with advanced genetics. All the rams catalogued are in the top 50% of Border Leicesters born in 2013. Shading and boxes show the top breeding values as in the percentile report. You will notice 154 of the rams alotted are in the top 25% and 42 of these are in the top 10% assessed by Sheep Genetics. Our Border Leicesters have come a long way since our first sale. Constant striving for genetic improvement has changed the traditional maternal breed to one more suited for today s lamb production. With improved maternal traits of fertility and milking, we now include better carcase traits, having selected for eye muscle, fat and less leg as well as much higher growth at a younger age. Feedback from our clients confirms we are on the right track. Our rams are siring lambs that grow faster with better bodies. The wether lambs are able to be marketed earlier, no longer the penalty when breeding those top ewes! Ewe lambs are breeding earlier and producing more lambs during their lifetime. Stud rams will be found among those catalogued. A minimum price of $2,000 applies for rams to be registered. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you require help with your ram selection. John, Judy & Josh Dowdy

www.superborders.com Deepwater stud is a founding member of $uperborder$ Inc, a progressive group of stud breeders using Lambplan to produce better Borders. Members of the group are committed to high recording standards to enable high accuracies of ASBVs. $uperborder$ is the brand name for rams from members flocks assessed and ranked by Lambplan as above average for the breed each year. Each year the criteria for eligible $uperborder$ rams increases to ensure top quality rams with strong indices and ASBVs. This year the benchmark for $uperborder$ is an index of 113.5 in the August 15th run using the Maternal $ Index $uperborder$ must also be structurally sound with data entries meeting the group s criteria. These rams may be identified at a glance by their official $uperborder$ round yellow ear tags and are the best of the breed. Breeders in the $uperborder$ group constantly record information on pedigree, birth, rearing, growth at different ages, wool weights, and scan for fat cover and muscle depth. Common sires are used to help identify environmental effects on their progeny. From this data the Lambplan program calculates the genetic merit of every ram in each of the production traits, rated against the average for the breed. These ratings are called Australian Sheep Breeding Values or ASBVs. The Maternal Index This index combines a ram s breeding values according to the actual increased dollar value of their progeny s extra growth, extra fertility and better carcase traits. Every point over 100 indicates $1 extra income from every ewe joined. An index of 115 indicates that a ram will produce $15 extra lamb value for every ewe joined. In a working lifetime of 4 years, a ram should produce 200 progeny and the extra value produced by that ram is $15 x 200 = $3,000 First cross ewe and wether progeny from these rams can be marketed as Bred from $uperborder$ and identified with the trademarked tags and sale placards. These genetically superior ewes are in demand by specialist prime lamb breeders, who appreciate their superior fertility and better weight gain.. Identification If you choose to sell in saleyards remember to ask about our $uperborder$ branded eartags and special sale placards to attract a premium price for the first cross progeny.

CATALOGUE ABBREVIATIONS AND FIGURES EXPLAINED Following the lot number of each ram across the page are the columns titled: ID: SIRE: Ear tag identification. All the rams were dropped between 23rd July and 27 th. September 2013. Further information on each ram is available from our database if the tag number is quoted or on the Lambplan website at www.sheepgenetics.org.au/lambplan/using search. Stud sire of ram (See table for full sire I.D). If you are marketing your first cross ewes you may select rams from the same sire for a more even drop of lambs. DOB: Birth date in 2013. BT: BWT: WWT: (Birth Type) Indicates the birth type of each individual ram. (Birth Weight in kg) Estimates the genetic difference in weight at birth. Our lambs are all weighed at birth. Too large a lamb may cause lambing problem or too small, low survival rates. (Weaning Weight) Estimates the genetic difference in live weight at 100 days. An indicator of early growth of the lamb seperate from the ewes mothering ability (MWWT). MWWT: (Maternal Weaning Weight in kg) This estimates the dam s milk production and mothering ability at 100 days (weaning). PWWT: (Post Weaning Weight in kg) Estimates the genetic difference in growth at 225 days. Important for lamb production. YWT: PFAT: PEMD: (Yearling Weight in kg) Indicates later growth. Important if planning to grow lambs to heavy export weights. (Post Weaning Fat depth in mm) Estimates the genetic difference in GR fat depth at 45 kg live weight. All the rams were scanned at post weaning. After a series of difficult seasons, most of our clients like their ewes to carry some fat, using leaner terminal sires to produce ideal second-cross lambs. However, those wishing to grow out first-cross wether lambs to heavy weights may wish to select leaner rams. (Post Weaning Eye Muscle Depth in mm) Estimates the genetic difference in eye muscle at the C site at 45 kg and indicates carcase muscling.

YGFW: PSC: NLW: INDEX: ACC: (Yearling Greasy Fleece Weight in %) Estimates the genetic difference in fleece weights at 360 days. Heavier fleece weights help pay the shearers. (Post Weaning Scrotal Circumference) Estimates the genetic difference between rams at 225 days. Rams with higher scrotal circumference at an early age will, on average, sire daughters that are more fertile. Especially relevant for breeders seeking to join first cross ewe lambs. (Number of Lambs Weaned expressed as %). An indication of fertility. Estimates the genetic difference between animals for the number of lambs likely to be weaned each lambing. (Generated from pedigree/progeny records.) A ram with an EBV of 15% will sire daughters that, on average produce 7.5% (the daughters inherit half of the sires genes) more progeny per lambing than a sire with an EBV of 0. The indexes shown are the Maternal Dollar Index from the 15/08/2014 run used by $uperborder$ members for their sale rams. Indexes are updated regularly and this figure may differ from that currently available on the Sheep Genetics website. (Accuracy) This shows the percentage of accuracy of each ASBV. Despite intensive and accurate data collection, young animals will only achieve high degrees of accuracy when they have progeny tested and recorded in Lambplan. (None of the rams catalogued have progeny). Groups of animals breed more closely to their average ASBV or Index Value than individuals the breeding performance of a team of rams will be almost identical to their average ASBV.

MANAGEMENT OF YOUR NEW RAM The rams presented have been grown out on spring pasture to be in good working condition. Each ram has recently been drenched and vaccinated. Future management, especially in the next year will influence their productive life in your breeding program. Border Leicester rams are usually younger than other breeds of rams during their first joining due to being spring dropped. We wish you every success with your purchase and suggest: Place new rams in a secure paddock away from older rams and unjoined females until mating. If absolutely necessary to introduce new rams to other rams before mating, try to lessen the risk of injury by confining the group in a small pen, eg.catching pen. Leave for 12-24 hours until more settled before releasing. Be aware that Ovine Brucellosis can be transmitted to rams from recently joined females as well as sexually active males. Injuries can lead to infection and require prompt teatment with antibiotics (especially lameness.) In the interval before mating feed your rams well. Remember semen is manufactured six weeks prior to use. If you are able to supplement your rams diet with lupins it will improve semen quality. Your rams will perform better if they have a short fleece. Don t overwork rams in their first season. Preferably put them with older or mixed age ewes. After use treat them well, they are your investment for future years. Give regular drenches, 6 in 1 vaccinations, adequate nutrition and regular physical examinations to help ensure a long productive life. Deepwater stud guarantees that our rams will successfully complete their first breeding season so if you feel a ram has failed to do this please contact us to discuss the matter as soon as possible.
