TECHNICAL BULLETIN : SERVICE INFORMATION / RETROFIT / UPGRADE CO₂ Sensor Replacement (RF598 and RF602) Installation Instructions Replacing the Valtronics CO₂ sensor with the Vaisala CO₂ sensor in the NU 8500 & NU 8700 (All voltages) Incubator Models Note: This retrofit cannot be used, If Incubator is Series 4 or earlier and has factory installed Chart Recorder Output (option I23) This Retrofit Kit has all of the parts required to convert the incubator for use of the Vaisala GMM111 CO₂ sensor in place of the Valtronics 2015SPI 3N CO₂ sensor. Replacing the sensors for both chambers in the NU 8700 model incubators require 2 kits. Parts in this kit: # Description Part Number Quantity Comment 1. Installation Instructions for the NU 8500 and NU 8700 models Note: The NU 8500 having only 1 chamber incorporates only one CO2 sensor and will use only one Retrofit kit (RF598). The NU 8700 with its 2 chambers incorporates two CO₂ sensors, one for each chamber. NuAire recommends that both CO₂ sensors are converted at the same time thus requiring 2 retrofit kits to accomplish a full conversion. For the purpose of this instruction an NU 8700 dual chamber is used to show converting both chambers to the Vaisala CO₂ sensor. 1. Open door for a few minutes to ventilate the chamber and allow to humidity to escape. Close the door if desired, turn off the unit and disconnect the power. Remove the lid. 2. Remove the hosing indicated in red on the hosing diagram: From the CO₂ sensor(s) All hosing between the large capsule filter And the red tagged return hose shown in the picture 3. Remove the CO₂ sensor wiring, a gray data cable with blue connectors on both ends and the pair of red and white wires for the DC power from the P1 connector on the main board. CO₂ sensor wiring removed from the indicated connections at the CO₂ sensors. CO₂ sensor wiring removed from the indicated connections at the Control boards. STB0252 Rev 3 December/2014 Page 2 of 8
Note: If your unit has the optional RH monitoring system there will also be a wire from the RH sensor in with the red wire there. Remove this wire from the connector and place it back in the same position in the new wiring harness. 4. Remove the CO₂ sensor(s) The tall plastic standoffs may become brittle with age. If they break, spares are included. 5. Remove the prom chip from the main board. Replace it with the new chip provided. Ensure that the notch on one end of the prom Is aligned with the notch in the prom chip connector on the board. Once you are sure all of the legs are in the socket, press down firmly. Notch at this end Eprom chip shown installed in circuit board 6. Install the new CO₂ sensor(s). The 8500 and 8700 upper chamber sensor (the front one) will have the hose barbs facing the rear of the incubator. The 8700 lower chamber sensor (the one in the back of the shroud) will have its hose barbs facing the front of the unit. STB0252 Rev 3 December/2014 Page 3 of 8
7. Install the CO₂ Sensor Conversion Board(s). The gray data cable w/keyed blue connector plugs in here The gray power cable with the blue connector plugs into P1 the power connection on the board will have: the red wire going to the pin labeled +12 and the black wire going to the pin labeled as GND on the board. Refer to: BCD 08234 for the NU 8500 models BCD 08237 for the NU 8700 models Conversion board connections on the Control board 8. Run the wires from the conversion board to the new CO₂ sensor. Use wire ties to bind the new wires to the existing wire loom as you go. The red wire connects to position A and the black wire connects to position B on the new CO₂ sensor from the black data cable as shown in the picture. The red wire connects to position 24V and the black wire connects to position 0 next to the 24V position from the gray power cable as shown in the picture. Refer to: BCD 08232 for the NU 8500 models BCD 08233 for the NU 8700 models Conversion board connections on the new CO₂ sensors If you have the RH monitoring system add the RH sensor wire removed in step 4 to the power plug +12VDC pin at P1 9. Install the new hose assemblies. See hosing diagram for proper orientation. Ensure that there are no kinks or tight spots in the hose assemblies. Refer to hosing diagram BCD 08232 for the NU 8500 models BCD 08233 for the NU 8700 models 10. Replace the incubator lid. Power up and perform a master reset. Recalibrate the CO₂ and temp sensors after the incubator has reached temperature set point. Check for proper operation. STB0252 Rev 3 December/2014 Page 4 of 8
