Profile The ARABATZIDIS H. ATHANASIOS S.A. is a family owned corporation, located on Northern Greece, in the city of Komotini. Its operations started in 1965, when its founder Mr. Arabatzidis Athanasios, began to trade new tires and wheels. During the 70 s and the 80 s the company was an exclusive dealer for Goodyear and Pirelli tires. In late 80 s the company expanded its operations into the manufacturing of retreaded tires. Nowadays, the company is focused in becoming a one source supplier for tires for private and commercial users, offering new tires of various brands, like Toyo, Yokohama, Goodyear, Bridgestone, Michelin, Roadstone, etc. and its own manufactured retreaded tires, combined with repair services. Under the brand Thrakiki Tire Retreading the company started its manufacturing activities in 1988, using both the hot and the cold cure methods to retread tire for light trucks, heavy truck/bus, some industrial and OTR tires. Aiming to provide high quality and to expand its production line, in 1992, a second investment was made. In 1996, the company was awarded for its efforts on quality, by the Editorial Ofice of Spain, with the 10th Golden European Award for Quality. The company s retreading production and product quality was certified to comply with the UN-ECE Regulation E109 for commercial retreaded tires, by the German Kraftfahrt-Bundesant (KBA), in 2007.
Retreading Facts Truck tires are designed to be retreaded 3 to 5 times. 41 % of truck tyres in the E.U. replacement market are retreaded tires. Retreads are also environmentally friendly. Tires are basically petro- chemical products. It takes 22 gallons of oil to manufacture one new truck tire. Most of the oil is found in the casing, which is reused in the retreading process. As a result, it takes only 7 gallons of oil to produce a retread. Retreaded tires have a cost ration of almost 2/3rds lower than new tires. Retreading is the first step towards recycling.
Retreading Process Initial Inspection: The worn tire is visually inspected for big cuts or any visual disorder, stones and foreign objects are removed. Following, the casing is inspected both internally and externally for nail holes, small injuries, rust, casing integrity. Lastly, during this stage information about the casing s identity is kept, in order to keep the casing s history in file. Buffing: The worn tread is removed from the casing, leaving a thin layer of rubber as an under-tread for the application of the new tread. The removal of the old/worn tread is made with the use of automated, computer controlled buffing machine. Skiving: Small injuries on the last belt of the buffed tyre are cleaned and carefully inspected for any rust, developed within the lower belts. Repair: In case that the casing needs to be repaired, cause of a nail hole, or small injury, then with the use of the proper repairing materials, the casing s integrity is restored. Cementing: A special solution of cement is applied on the casing, in order to enforce the initial adhesion of the old tread and the new tread. Building: On the prepared casing, after the application of the necessary cushion layer, the new tread is applied. Enveloping: The tires after the building face is placed in envelops, which are used in order to press the new tread on the casing. Curing: The retreaded tires are cured for a period of time, under certain pressure and temperature, so that the new tread to be vulcanized on the casing. Final Inspection: The cured tyres are inflated and visually inspected for any destructions of the tread, or the casing, after the curing. Following the ready retreaded tire is painted with a solution and filed ready to be shipped to the customer.
