Porsche Service Wheels all-round perfection

Contents. Postcard-sized performance worthy of a Porsche: tyres with the N designation. The importance of tyres for your Porsche 3 N designation 4 The three criteria of the EU label 6 Wheel and tyre sets from Porsche Tequipment 8 Alloy wheel refurbishment 10 Porsche Service offers for wheels and tyres 11 Porsche and Michelin: a successful partnership 13 Porsche has been building cars for more than six decades. All of our models have one thing in common: high performance combined with the highest levels of everyday practicality. The Boxster, Cayman, 911, Panamera, Cayenne and Macan also place great importance on having sufficient reserves with regard to power and safety. Suitable tyres make a significant contribution in this respect, and not just when braking. It is the tyres that transfer the exceptional power of Porsche vehicles to the road, providing the only connection between your Porsche and the surface below. The wheel tread establishes contact with the road surface, thereby ensuring grip and road holding. Although the area of contact is only around the size of a postcard, it is subject to an array of rigorous demands: maximum traction, highest possible mileage, even wear, a short braking distance, high cornering stability, low noise levels, low fuel consumption, attractive profile, etc. In collaboration with selected partners from the tyre industry, Porsche strives to continually achieve the best results. When designing and producing tyres and wheel and tyre sets, consideration is given to every little detail at the Porsche R&D Centre in Weissach. In the end, approval is only given to tyres that are ideally matched to the respective model and contribute to its outstanding handling characteristics even when driving at the limit. These tyres are available from Porsche Service. Porsche Service has the expertise and the relevant specialist tools for all Porsche vehicles, from classics to new cars, right through to GT models. Incidentally, Porsche was the first automotive manufacturer ever to introduce a specific quality symbol for its tyres the N designation. 2 3

Another Porsche development: the N designation. Whether you opt for the all-season, summer, winter or high-performance variant all of the tyres available from the Porsche Service advisor at your Porsche Centre have been comprehensively tested and approved by Porsche. This is identified by the N designation, which is always shown in the technical data for the tyres. The codes used are N0, N1, N2, N3, N4, N5 and N6. The number relates to the tyre specifications at approval and increases with each new version. Porsche approved tyres ensure that your vehicle maintains its original levels of performance and safety reserves, even when its tyres need to be replaced. There are many good reasons for this: 33, to be precise. Tyres branded with the Porsche N designation differ from other tyres, in particular, in terms of their tyre geometry, rubber compound and test procedure covering a total of 33 important criteria. These include 12 objective outdoor criteria such as dry and wet braking performance and service life. There are also 16 objective indoor criteria to consider, including rolling resistance and high-speed performance, as well as five subjective outdoor criteria such as handling and ride comfort. Important: the new EU tyre labelling, which we will tell you more about on the following pages, only shows three specified criteria for passenger car and truck tyres and is not a substitute for the Porsche N designation. In addition, the criteria for EU labelling often has conflicting interests: a tyre with a particularly low rolling resistance, for example, will always have a lower wet grip. Porsche never compromises on safety. In its tyre tests, it considers roadholding both on wet and dry surfaces before fuel efficiency. However enticing the fuel saving potential of a tyre with optimised rolling resistance might be, it is every metre of braking distance that counts in an emergency situation. Only by fitting tyres with the N designation can you be sure of highquality tyres that have been specifically tested for your Porsche model. 4 5

The three criteria of the EU label. Since the end of 2012, all passenger car and truck tyres being sold have been required to have an EU label. Countries outside of the EU e. g. Korea have also either introduced this label already or are planning to do so in the future. The label or sticker provides an evaluation based on three criteria: fuel consumption, wet grip and noise classification. 1 A + 0.10 l B + 0.12 l C + 0.14 l E + 0.15 l F + 0.15 l Litre of additional fuel consumption per 100 km with an average fuel consumption of 6.6 l. Source: Volkswagen AG, VSO/4 After Sales, 10/2012. G 1 2 3 A + 3.0 m B + 7.0 m C + 12.0 m E + 18.0 m F Braking distance at 80 km/h until vehicle comes to a complete standstill. Source: Volkswagen Service Deutschland, 8/2012. 3 sound waves The external rolling noise complies with the EU limits applicable up to 2015. 2 3 [1] Fuel consumption. Reducing the rolling resistance helps to lower fuel consumption and therefore also CO 2 emissions. The classifications range from A (very low fuel consumption) to G (very high fuel consumption); D is not used for passenger car tyres. On most passenger cars, the difference between each grade is an increase in fuel consumption of around 0.1 l/100 km. The level of fuel efficiency generally depends on the vehicle and driving conditions. An economical driving style, for example, can significantly reduce fuel consumption. In order to achieve optimum fuel efficiency and wet grip, the tyre pressure should also be kept at the prescribed level. [2] Wet grip class. The wet grip class shows how effective the tyres are when braking on a wet surface. The classifications range from A (shortest braking distance) to F (longest braking distance); classes D and G are not used for passenger car tyres. In this respect too, the efficiency level generally depends on the vehicle and driving conditions. In the event of an emergency stop, the braking distance for a fully laden vehicle with class A tyres could be up to 30 % shorter than with class F tyres. For a typical passenger car travelling at 80 km/h, the stopping distance may be up to 18 m shorter. [3] Noise classification. The noise classification provides information about how loud the tyres are when the vehicle drives past. The volume is given as an absolute value in decibels (db) and depicted using up to three stylised sound waves. A 10 db increase in the noise level is subjectively perceived as twice as loud. Therefore, 70 db equates roughly to the volume of a loud conversa tion and 80 db to road noise in heavy traffic. Incidentally, the external rolling noise is not identical to the noise level inside the vehicle. EU tyre label 2 sound waves The external rolling noise already complies with the EU limits applicable from 2016 onwards or is up to 3 db lower. 1 sound wave The external rolling noise is more than 3 db lower than the limits applicable from 2016 onwards. 6 7

Sports shoes. Tailor-made. Wheel and tyre sets from Porsche Tequipment. Porsche recommends the use of wheel and tyre sets from the Porsche Tequipment range. All tyres comply with Porsche specifications. This is identified by the N designation (N0, N1, etc.) on the side wall. The benefit: your vehicle will enjoy the high level of active driving safety so typical of Porsche. The tyres are also optimised for noise and offer excellent fuel economy as a result of their reduced rolling resistance. In addition, they are perfectly adapted to the functionality of the control systems, thereby eliminating the possibility of component damage and wheel clearance problems. They also meet all requirements with regard to high-speed performance, as well as your design expectations, of course. The wheel and tyre sets are styled to match the vehicle for a harmo nious and sporty overall appearance. 20-inch Carrera S wheels painted in black (high-gloss) with summer tyres 20-inch Carrera Classic wheels with summer tyres 20-inch SportDesign wheels with summer tyres 20-inch Turbo wheels with winter tyres 8 9

Stepping out in style. 365 days a year. Alloy wheel refurbishment. Over the course of 30,000 race victories, you learn a lot about cars. Down to the wheels and tyres. Porsche Dynamic Repair from Porsche Service covers a range of alternative repair methods. Our specially trained staff do their utmost to ensure that parts are repaired rather than simply replaced. This helps to save on time, money and resources. One of the options available is alloy wheel refurbishment. Alloy wheels are often subjected to a great deal of stress and damage by grit or kerbs. However, minor flaws and scratches can generally be corrected, depending on the level of damage. It is important that the scratches are only in the paint finish and do not go down to the base material. This ensures the highest levels of safety, even at high speeds. Naturally, our staff also receive regular training in the latest repair methods. On road, off road or on the racetrack you know where you prefer to drive your Porsche and our Porsche Service advisors know which tyres are best for you and your Porsche. They will explain the differences between the various types (e. g. summer and all-season) and can source special tyres for all Porsche models even historic ones. Porsche Service staff are also suitably qualified to fit high-performance tyres to your vehicle without any damage and perform wheel balancing, if required. On request, we are also happy to store your summer or winter tyres. check determines the age, tread depth and condition of tyres. We also carry out a visual inspection to check for any wheel and tyre damage and examine the tyre sealant s condition. Tyres are regularly approved for all vehicles, from modern classics to historic Porsche models. As a result, over 150 different tyre sets are tested in various disciplines on corresponding original vehicles. Porsche Service is your reliable partner when it comes to expertise in wheels and tyres. For further information about Porsche Service and our range of tyres, please contact your Porsche Centre or visit us online at www.porsche.com/service. As well as the correct fitting, we also carry out tread pattern tests to check for uneven wear on your tyres. A wheel safety 10 11

Porsche and Michelin a successful partnership for top performance. On the racetrack and road. Porsche and Michelin have been closely linked with each other since 1969. The partnership between these two technology leaders has strengthened even further over the last decade. Michelin has been the global tyre cooperation partner for Porsche since 2002. As part of their collaboration, Porsche involves Michelin in the development process long before the market launch of a new vehicle. For a considerable period beforehand, the experienced tyre manufacturer works on developing products that are tailored specifically to our Porsche models. This ensures that the interaction between chassis and tyres is continually optimised down to the finest detail. Only these special tyres receive the coveted Porsche N designation. The difference made by tyres that are perfectly tailored to the vehicle performance when driving at the limit is shown by our successes in motorsport. Our passionate collaboration on the racetrack ensures the transfer of this technology to the road providing a sound basis for the development of standard production tyres. Today, the development of all Michelin tyres with the N designation utilises key technologies that have been tried and tested in motorsport. It is therefore only to be expected that many Porsche sports cars are fitted with Michelin tyres during vehicle manufacture. The harmonious relationship between the two companies is demonstrated by numerous successes on the track. Both a confirmation and an incentive for the future development after development. Now, you too can benefit from this fascinating cooperation between Porsche and Michelin and look forward to enjoying maximum performance. Simply speak to an advisor at your Porsche Centre. 12 13
