Installation and Operation Back-UPS BX550CI-CN Safety and General Information This unit is intended for indoor use only. Do not operate this unit in direct sunlight, in contact with fluids, or where there is excessive dust or humidity. The battery typically lasts for two to five years. Environmental factors impact battery life. Elevated ambient temperatures, poor quality utility power, and frequent short duration discharges will shorten battery life. Connect the Back-UPS power cable directly into a wall outlet. Do not use surge protectors or extension cords. Connect the Battery Pull down on the battery connected handle, and then push it into the unit. The battery charges fully during the first 10 hours while the Back-UPS is operating on utility power. Do not expect full battery runtime capability during the initial charge period. Battery wear is not covered by the Limited Warranty. There are no serviceable parts in the Back-UPS. Do not attempt to open or repair the Back-UPS as this will void the warranty. The battery in this unit is not replaceable. Contact APC to order a new Back-UPS. Refer to the contact information at the end of this manual.

Connect the Equipment ON/OFF button Battery connector Circuit breaker Utility power cable Battery and surge protected outlets bu195a ON/OFF button Battery Connector Circuit breaker Utility power cable Battery Backup outlets + Surge Protection Press the ON/OFF button on the front of the unit. The unit will emit a single, short beep and the green Power On indication will illuminated to confirm that the Back-UPS is on and is providing power protection. The Back-UPS should charge for at least 10 hours to provide maximum runtime. The Back-UPS battery will charge while the Back-UPS is turned on or off and is connected to utility power. Do not expect full battery runtime capability during the initial charge period. Use to connect the battery. Use to reset the system after an overload condition has occurred causing the circuit breaker to trip. Use this cable to connect the Back-UPS to utility power. These outlets provide battery backup power to connected equipment for a limited period of time during power outages and voltage fluctuations. The Battery Backup outlets provide battery power to connected equipment only when the Back-UPS is turned on. Connect critical equipment such as a computer, computer monitor, modem or other data sensitive devices to these outlets. Do not connect aquarium equipment, laser printers, paper shredders, sump pumps, or fans to these outlets as the modified sine wave output of the Back-UPS may cause these devices to experience a decrease in performance. Do not connect surge protectors or extension cords to these outlets. 2 Installation and Operation Back-UPS BX550CI-CN

Voltage Sensitivity Adjustment Voltage Regulation Automatic Voltage Regulation boosts the utility voltage when it drops below safe levels. This allows the equipment that is connected to the Back-UPS to operate during low voltage conditions. The Back-UPS will switch to battery power if the utility input voltage level becomes too low for the Automatic Voltage Regulation feature to compensate, or if the utility power is experiencing voltage fluctuations. If the Back-UPS switches to battery power too frequently or too infrequently, adjust the transfer voltage and sensitivity settings: 1. Verify that the Back-UPS battery is connected. Connect the Back-UPS to a wall outlet. The Back-UPS should be turned off. 2. Press and hold the ON/OFF button until the LED flashes rapidly. Release the button. The Back-UPS is now in Program mode. 3. The LED will flash once, twice or three times to indicate the voltage sensitivity level. Refer to the table for an explanation of the transfer voltage sensitivity levels. 4. Press the ON/OFF button within two seconds to change the setting. Each time the button is pressed, the LED will flash at a different rate: once, twice, or three times per second, indicating the new setting. Continue pressing the button until the desired setting is reached. 5. To exit Program mode wait five seconds and all LED indicators will extinguish. Program mode is no longer active. LED Flashes Audible Beep One flash every second Two flashes every second Three flashes every second Sensitivity Setting Input Voltage Range for Utility Operation Recommended Use LOW 155 Vac to 280 Vac Use this setting with equipment that is less sensitive to fluctuations in voltage or waveform distortions. MEDIUM (factory default) 160 Vac to 280 Vac Use this setting for normal operation conditions. HIGH 165 Vac to 270 Vac Use this setting when connected equipment is sensitive to voltage fluctuations or waveform distortions. Installation and Operation Back-UPS BX550CI-CN 3

Troubleshooting Problem Probable Cause Solution Back-UPS will not turn on. Circuit Breaker has tripped. Reduce the amount of equipment plugged into the Battery Backup + Surge Protection outlets. Reset the circuit breaker by pushing it back in. Connected equipment loses power. The ON/OFF button is lit, and the unit is beeping four times every 30 seconds, or it is emitting a constant tone. The On/Off button flashes once per second, and the Back-UPS beeps once every ½ second. Battery Replacement Utility power is not available at the wall outlet. The Back-UPS is overloaded. The Back-UPS has exhausted its available battery power. Ensure the fuse or circuit breaker for the wall outlet is okay, and the wall switch controlling the wall outlet (if any) is in the ON position. Ensure the equipment plugged into the outlets of the unit are not overloading the capacity of the unit. Try disconnecting some of the equipment one device at a time, and see if the problem continues. The unit can only operate on battery power for a limited amount of time. The unit will eventually turn off when the available battery power has been used. Allow the unit to recharge for 10 hours before continuing to use the unit. The equipment connected to the The output waveform is designed for computers Back-UPS does not accept the and computer-related equipment. It is not step-approximated sine waveform from designed for use with motor-type equipment. the unit. The Back-UPS may require service. Contact APC Technical Support for further troubleshooting. The unit is using battery. Battery capacity is low (there are 2 minutes of run time remaining). The unit is operating normally and using battery power. Save any current work, turn off all equipment, and turn the unit OFF. Once normal power is restored, turn the unit back ON, and turn on all equipment. The unit is about to shut down due to a low battery charge condition! When the unit beeps once every ½ second, the battery are 2 minutes of run time remaining. Immediately turn the computer OFF and turn the UPS OFF. When power returns to normal, the unit will recharge the battery. Inadequate runtime. The battery is not fully charged. Allow the unit to charge by leaving it plugged in, and switched on for 10 hours. The battery is near the end of useful life. As a battery ages, the amount of runtime available will decrease. Batteries also age prematurely if the unit is placed near excessive heat. If the battery will not charge, the Back-UPS is no longer operable. The battery in the Back-UPS BX550CI-CN is not user-replaceable. Contact APC Sales and Technical Support for a list of authorized service centers near you.
