Wheat Ridge STEM/Engineering 2015 2016 Shell Eco Marathon Sponsorship Information Packet
What is the Shell Eco marathon Challenge? The Shell Eco marathon competition challenges student teams from around the world to design, build and test ultra energy efficient vehicles. With annual events first in the Americas in 1939, then Europe and Asia, the winners are the teams that go the farthest using the least amount of energy. The events spark debate about the future of mobility and inspire young engineers to push the boundaries of fuel efficiency. This year the Americas marathon will take place in Detroit, Michigan. There are different categories for different types of cars. Within the efficiency categories are different sub categories for the energy source. Students who compete in this competition attend from high schools and colleges alike. They work without design help and may only have guidance from mentors. The students spend a full year making and testing their car, using the guidelines set forth by Shell.
Team Bio The Wheat Ridge STEM Engineering team is a group of high school students at Wheat Ridge High School who are interested in engineering. This group is not limited to any grade level, and is composed of 9 th graders through 12 th graders. Formed in August 2014, the team s goal was to design and build a carbon fiber based car that would be powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. We competed in the Shell Eco marathon in April of 2015, and placed first in the Prototype Hydrogen Fuel Cell division. The team was composed of 15 students, but interest levels have grown and we will have a growth in students this coming year. Many students start the class with little to no experience. The goal of this involved project is to teach students how to work together as they design, manufacture, assemble and compete. We are excited for our Drive for Detroit 2016, as we will be building two cars.
