Determine the possible cause of any malfunction by consulting the "Testing and Trouble-Shooting" section of this Manual before any attempt is made to repair the system. Following this practice will result in more accurate maintenance of the system and will aid in preventing unnecessary repairs. Printed in U.S.A. 1

A rack gear (between the pistons) drives the pinion that is directly connected to the vertical spindle on wide row crop models; or to the pedestal on dual tricycle models. DISASSEMBL Y Instructions for complete disassembly of the power steering unit are outlined. However, it is possible that a complete disassembly may not be necessary. In this event, use only the area of instruction that applies to the particular problem. 1. Position wheels in a straight forward direction, shut off engine, remove service panel, disconnect oil cooler and position it out of the way. 2. Remove hood cap and grille assembly as shown in Fig. 1. (Fig. 2 is an installed view of the steering unit. ) 3. Disconnect the right and left turn hydraulic lines, Fig. 2. 4. Remove the rack guide (with shims) as shown in Fig. 3. Fig.3 - Removing or Installing Rack Guide Fig. 4 - Preparing for Rack and Piston Removal 2

All of the procedures and service information contained in this part pertain only to the basic engine itself, without regard to any particular application. in which the engine may be used. Where right and left-hand sides are mentioned, it refers to the engine as viewed from the rear. Direction of engine rotation, however, is viewed from the front of the engine. NOTE: For specific detailed infoy11tation concerning the Lubrication System and the other engine systems for the basic G-206 Engine, refer to the appropriate part within this section of your manual. ENGINE DESCRIPTION The Model G- 206 Engine is a 4-cylinder, 4- stroke cycle, overhead valve type gasoline engine with a bore of 3-13/16 inches and a stroke of 4-1/2 inches. The engine has a total piston displacement of 206 cubic inches and a compression ratio of 7. 25 to 1. The G- 206 Gasoline Engine has a maximum corrected brake horsepower of 64 (subject to official confirmation). Engine torque is 172 ft.-ibs. at approximately 1200 rpm. The cylinder block is made of cast iron and is cast integrally with the crankcase. The sides of the cylinder block extend below the axis of the crankshaft to form a stiffening skirt. The replaceable cylinder sleeves are of the dry-type and are made of cast iron. The sleeves are shouldered and have a slight clearance fit in the cylinder block. The valves are vertically located in replaceable cast iron guides and are operated by mushroom-type tappets located in the cylinder block, through push rods to the rocker arms. The crankshaft is supported by three main bearings and is precision ground and balanced. All main bearing and connecting rod bearing surfaces are hardened to provide maximum service. Crankshaft end-play is controlled by the center main bearing. The aluminum alloy pistons are cam ground Printed in U.S.A. 1

MASSEY-FERGUSON GROUP 0 - SECTION Q - PART 2 ENGINE OVERHAUL PROCEDURES 1 Timing Gear Marks of the teeth are broken, damaged, or badly worn, the gears must be replaced. 2. Measure the idler gear end-play with a dial indicator or a feeler gauge, as shown in Fig. 30. Proper end-play is 0.004-0.008 inch. Install new thrust washers if end-play exceeds O. 008 inch. Refer to heading "Balancer Idler Gears" for additional information concerning idler gear end-play. Printed in U.S.A. 3. Measure the backlash in the timing gears with a thickness gauge or dial indicator, as shown in Figs. 31 and 32. Proper timing gear backlash is from O. 001 to O. 002 inch clearance. NOTE: Worn bearings and jounzals can also cause excessive backlash. If excessive backlash is experienced, make sure the bearings and jollnzals are in good condition. 21

To re-assemble, reverse the order of operations. OIL PAN Removing Oil Pan Drain oil pan and remove dipstick. Remove setscrews securing oil pan to flywheel housing where necessary. Remove setscrews securing oil pan to crankcase and lower pan. Fig. 44 - Removing the Setscrew Which Secures the Oil Filter Bowl 2. Lower filter bowl as shown in Fig. 45. 3. Remove element and discard. 4. Wash bowl in cleaning solvent. 5. Install new rubber gasket in filter head casting. 6. Replace, if necessary, gaskets in the bowl. 7. Install new element, tighten bowl securing setscrew and run engine to check for leaks. REMOVING, CLEANING AND INSTALLING THE OIL PAN STRAINER Drain and remove oil pan. Printed in U.S.A. Installing Oil Pan Lightly coat crankcase faces with a thin coating of sealing compound and place gaskets in position making sure all holes line up. Place oil pan in position and screw setscrews lightly in place. Where applicable, install setscrews securing rear of oil pan to flywheel housing and tighten. Tighten setscrews securing oil pan to crankcase. Install dipstick and oil pan drain plug. OIL PUMP The oil pump is of the gear type, and is mounted onto the back of the balancer unit. The pump is driven by the balancer unit drive shaft. A relief valve is contained in the pump body. 35

Removing and installing this assembly from the tractor or unit is covered under the appropriate Model heading because of the many variations in external connections and mounting. This Assembly is attached to the transmission and may be further attached to side frames at the axle housing, depending on Model. Locations given as front, rear, left and right are based on a ''normal'' tractor and axle arrangement where the engine is located at the front of the unit, and the drive axle assembly, the rear. Left and right are determined standing behind the drive axle faci11g forward. Other arrangements are noted under the appropriate Model elsewhere in this Manual. For instance, the differential lock is located on the right side of the drive axle assembly, and carrier bearing pre-load is determined on the right side of the center housing regardless of their location when installed in a specific Model. The drive pinion assembly is located at the front of the ring gear. Revised June 72 - Printed in U.S.A. 1
