Fuse combination switches FUSERBLOC CD YOUR GUARANTEE FOR SAFE & RELIABLE SWITCHING & PROTECTION GAMME 041 A SWITCH BREAKING Safety isolating Fully visualised breaking, conforming to IEC 60947-3 (BS EN 60 947-3) standards, guarantees contact opening on each pole when the device is in OFF position. The forced opening of contacts is performed by a positive operation mechanism. Three padlockable in OFF position is also possible. Breaking upstream and downstream of the fuse enables its safe replacement, even if there is residual voltage in the circuit. On-load breaking This is possible in the most arduous load duty (AC 23 A, 690 V). High speed breaking of each pole is independant from the speed of the operator s manoeuvre. Tipped contacts and four breaking points per pole guarantee a high number of operations. PROTECTION BY FUSES Performance - High breaking capacity : 100 ka (DIN fuses), 80 ka (BS fuses) - Very effective limitation of short circuits - Total discrimination between 2 gg Reliability - Fail-safe protection at all times is guaranteed by simple design and operation (Joule effect) Safety - Released energy when eliminating a fault is contained within the fuse cartridge NFC, DIN, BS and UR ranges - Fuse curve characteristics are standardised as per IEC 269 2-1. 4

A PROVEN TECHNOLOGY TOTAL ISOLATION BETWEEN POLES Modulable construction enables each phase to be completely segregated from the other avoiding any internal problems such as arcing and cross contamination. FLEXIBLE MODULABLE CONSTRUCTION The unique construction enables the creation of single pole to multiple pole switch configurations, it allows different ratings from 32 to 1250 A to be mixed in the same device. SAFE REPLACEMENT OF THE FUSES Due to the double break system, the fuses are completely isolated from both the supply and the load enabling fuse replacement under totally safe conditions. SUPERIOR ELECTRICAL CHARACTERISTICS Four breaking points in series per pole with silver alloy contacts points ensure very high breaking characteristics under 690 V AC. FUSER 609 A FUSER 610 A FUSER 611 A FUSER 608 A CERTIFIED SOLUTIONS The entire Fuserbloc range has been fully tested and certified in accordance with the current international standard IEC 947 as switch disconnector fuses. With a high short circuit withstand of 80 ka (BS) and 100 ka (DIN) under 690 V the Fuserbloc CD can be utilised in the most arduous conditions. ENHANCED PRODUCT LIFETIME The widely used switching principle guarantees maximum reliability over time. The contact point technology employed remains effective and provides an enhanced product lifetime even in arduous operating conditions such as highly polluted or corrosive environment. 60947-3 5

Fuse combination switches FUSERBLOC CD MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY FOR EASE OF INTEGRATION FRONT OR SIDE OPERATION Total flexibility is assured from 20 through to 1250 A as the same standard switches can be utillsed for either front, side, direct or external operation simply be selecting the appropriate accessories. Black or Red / Yellow IP55 and IP65 ON-OFF or ON-OFF-TEST handles are available. Padlocking by means of three padlocks. The external front operation enables the door to be interlocked (cannot be opened) when the switch is in the I (ON) position or in padlocked position. Defeatable & non-defeatable variations are available. This feature enables the door to be opened whilst the switch is in the I (ON) position through intervention of a qualified operator and the appropriate tooling. TIME SAVING The patented design of the handles enables the handle to be fixed from the outside if desired. FRONT / REAR CONNECTIONS Front and rear connections variations are available for the complete range from 32 to 1250 A. Providing the best solution for each application For Fuserbloc CD 630 to 1250 A a patented solution allows customers to configure the switch terminals from front to rear connections without any supplementary accessories. This innovative modification is achieved through a simple rotation of the terminals. FUSER 638 A FUSER 639 A FUSER 613 A FUSER 612 A Front/front Rear/front FUSER 640 A Front/rear Rear/rear 6

Fuse combination switches FUSERBLOC CD SOLUTIONS FOR ALL OF YOUR REQUIREMENTS FLAT MOUNTING The design of the Fuserbloc CD range from 20 to 1250 A enables flat mounting as standard. Flat mounting is ideal for withdrawable MCC applications. Enabling overall compartment sizes to be reduced and easy access for fuse replacement. FUSED CHANGEOVER SWITCHES Socomec s range of fused changeover switches, from 20 to 400 A is an interesting solution for the protection and disconnection of stand-by pumps. FUSER 621 A FUSER 426 A TWO POLE SWITCHES The Fuserbloc CD flexible modulable desigh facilitates a full range of two pole switches for DC applications. It allows valuable space saving in comparison to standard three pole devices for typical applications such as Battery protection or DC bus for large inverters. SEMI CONDUCTOR PROTECTION High speed fuses are the only products giving real protection of electronic components. Socomec has a full range of Fuse combination switches for the protection of electronic products. FUSER 437 A MULTI-POLE SWITCHES The Fuserbloc CD flexible modulable design facilitates a full range Multi-pole switches, such products are particularly interesting when several motors are to be switched off and isolated with one operation handle. These products provide an easy and profitable solution against a main switch plus 2 or more Circuit breakers connected in parallel (feeding several motors). This concept also brings real space saving in your panels. FUSER 597 A 8

FUSE PROTECTION HIGHEST CHARACTERISTICS HIGH LIMITATION The speed of protection provided by the fuses offers in most of the cases the best short circuit current limitation and so provides an adapted protection for all potential fault levels. ka Fuse SOFT STARTERS AND DRIVES Today s industrial plants are using soft-starters and drives. There can be a lot of confusion over how to best protect such sensitive devices. High speed fuses are the only products providing adequate protection of electronic motor controllers. Neither standard fuses nor circuit breakers can adequately protect the electronics. ka Circuit breaker High speed fuse FUSER 185 C GB ms FUSER 489 B GB ms BREAKING TIME The breaking time of a fuse depends on a physical rule, the more energy there is, the faster the fuse operates. A circuit breaker is a mechanical device and the opening time is affected by the inertia of the tripping mechanism. That is why the operating time decreases only slightly when the short circuit current increases. Some modern circuit breakers use the energy generated during the fault to increase the speed of operation but that is to the detriment of the breaking characteristics at common low fault levels. FUSER 486 B GB Circuit breaker Fuse BREAKING CAPACITY vs VOLTAGE The breaking capacity of most of the circuit breakers is dramatically reduced when the voltage increases, often the breaking capacity at 690 V is less than 30% of the value at 400 V. The breaking capacity of Breakers can decrease from 100 ka at 400 V to 20 ka or even less at 690 V. Circuit breaker Fuse FUSER 487 B GB 9

Fuse combination switches FUSERBLOC CD FUSE PROTECTION EASIEST DISCRIMINATION & COORDINATION EASY & SIMPLE Discrimination is an important factor. If the discrimination is managed correctly the fault is restricted to the part of the installation where the fault has occurred. Selectivity (discrimination) is much easier to achieve with fuses than with circuit breakers. There is no need to use special selection tables (often more than 20 pages in circuit breaker manufacturer s Catalogues) or manufacturer s software packages to check if there is a total or partial selectivity. With fuses discrimination is achieved when the ratio of 1.6 is respected between the upstream and downstream fuses. With circuit breakers this ratio is usually higher than 2.5. FUSER 491 A x 1.6 min. TOTAL OR PARTIAL When the discrimination is achieved independently of the fault current it is called TOTAL Selectivity. When the Selectivity exists only up to a certain short circuit value it is called PARTIAL Selectivity. With fuses we just have to take in account a minimum ratio of 1.6 between upstream and downstream fuses to have TOTAL Selectivity. With Circuit Breakers it is often NOT the case. STANDARD The fuse blowing and limitation curves are normalised according to the IEC 60269 standard. This means that the brand of fuses does not have an effect on the selectivity. It is possible to replace for example a Socomec fuse with another brand without losing the selectivity. With circuit breakers it is in general impossible to verify if there is selectivity between two different brands or between two generations of breaker. 100 A 160 A EASY CO-ORDINATION Type 2 co-ordination is now an industry standard and guarantees a high level of security for the end user with a quick and efficient restart after a fault. The higher current limitation capacity of fuses enables type 2 co-ordination to be easily achieved. The let-through current is lower than with other protection devices such as circuit breakers and can often permit the use of smaller contactors. FUSER 493 B CO-ORDINATION FOR GUARANTEED SAFETY Motor starters have to perform different functions such as, isolation, on-load switching, protection against overload and short circuits. Two possible solutions are: a circuit breaker, contactor (A) and thermal relay, a fuse combination switch, a thermal relay and a contactor (B). The devices must be co-ordinated together to guarantee protection of both personnel and equipment. Fuse Thermal relay Motor current FUSER 488 B GB FUSER 186 A 10

FUSE PROTECTION SAFEST PROTECTION RECLOSE OR REPLACE After a fault, a circuit breaker can be re-closed, that is the big argument of circuit breaker manufacturers. But one has to consider that after an opening on a significant short circuit the circuit breaker should be inspected. When a fuse blows it is replaced by a new one and the installation is reliable as prior the fault. It is hard to know how many times a circuit breaker has operated. Question: Reclose or Replace? RELIABILITY OVER TIME Fuses Constant performance level over time. A fuse is a static protection it is a totally sealed product. That guarantees long-term protection in the most difficult environmental conditions without maintenance. Circuit breakers This complex devices are composed of many moving parts, spring, contacts Performance level can drop or may drop over time. The tripping mechanism is affected by the dust, humidity, number of operations. Maintenance should be done. FUSER 490 B GB Reliability Circuit breaker Fuse ARC CONTAINMENT The energy released during a short circuit is contained within the sealed fuse cartridge. There is no effect on surrounding equipment as there is no release of ionised gases. With fuses there is no need for arc chutes and complicated designs with larger compartments to manage the effects of ionised gases released during the circuit breaker operationn on short circuit.
