As a wheelchair user who loves the Maine outdoors, I struggled pushing my wheelchair down paths and tote roads to get to my favorite spots. There were many times I couldn't get to where I wanted and would have to turn back. Even after a light snow, when deer hunting is at its best, I would be stuck in the house because of my inability to push the snowfilled wheels. While fishing or just going offroad, soft terrain would all but make it impossible for me to enjoy the outdoors. Now, after developing the Renegade All-Terrain Wheelchair, I can wheel offroad and through soft terrain or several inches of fluffy snow with relative ease. My hands never touch the muddy or wet wheels, keeping them warm and dry. I hope your Renegade gives you many years of independence and enjoyment. John W. Rackley Renegade Wheelchair Inventor

Wheels without limits: A chair made for those who still want to do it all By REBECCA HAMM ELIOT, Maine John Rackley of Eliot was tired of going on hunting trips with his friends and having to turn around because his wheelchair couldn't manage the uneven terrain of dirt paths. The smallest amount of snow would slow him down. Motivated by the idea of going off-road, Rackley invented a heavy-duty, manual wheelchair that allows him to traverse everything from the woods to ice to mud, and even beach sand. He is now marketing his Renegade Wheelchairs to others with disabilities who want to enjoy the outdoors. Rackley, a cabinetmaker and an avid hunter and fisherman, lost the use of his legs in an accident about 10 years ago. "After my injury, I took classes for Auto CAD. I went on the computer and it took me about a month to draw it all up," Rackley said of the chair. Rackley's Renegade Wheelchairs have 24-inch treaded wheels and an internal multi-gear system that works much like a mountain bike. The user can switch gears with push bars when the terrain changes. A flat terrain uses a higher gear. The push-bar system also propels the chair, preventing the user from getting his or her hands wet and dirty. "The first reason I made the thing was to get out hunting. Especially in snow. After it snows it's a good time to go hunting, but I didn't want to use my hands pushing the chair," he said. For about four years, Rackley has been perfecting the wheelchairs, adding new components and testing them out. "I used bikes from the dump to make the first one," he recalled. When Maine's WCSH Channel 6 news ran a story on Rackley, his wheelchairs grabbed the attention of Maine Independent Living Center, Alpha One, an agency that promotes independence for people with disabilities. Rackley and Alpha One partnered up about two months ago."now all I do is make sure they're built and (Alpha One) does all the business and marketing," Rackley said. Rackley has already sold several chairs and has about 10 models for display at VA hospitals, rehab centers and conventions.

John Nunan, communications director for Alpha One, said Renegade Wheelchairs epitomizes his company's philosophy of independence for people with disabilities. He said after watching the feature on Rackley, Alpha One assumed the product would need work, but would essentially be a good fit."he had Frankensteined the chair together and he had a working prototype. During the four years since the first design, he just kept pushing it. We loved the attitude and we loved the chair. We thought it would probably need a little work, but was probably something we can pass the word on to consumers about. When the product came in, it looked amazing. It was a finished, manufactured product and we were stunned by that," said Nunan. Because many of the board members at Alpha One are wheelchair users as well, the company recognized immediately that Rackley had invented something marketable, according to Nunan. Nunan said one of the appealing features about the Renegade chairs is that it does things a motorized wheelchair usually does, but costs the same as a manual wheelchair. As a fisherman and hunter growing up in Maine, Rackley also designed attachments like a fishing pole holder, a hitch for a wood trailer, a gun rack, deer blind and snowplow. "The chair has a trailer hitch. It can pull over 200 pounds in a trailer. It's good for working around in the yard," Rackley said. Renegade Wheelchairs also have ski attachments. The skis replace the front wheels and allows the user to take the chair across ice. "Although it was built for hunting, it can get you out in the beach and in the yard and the snow, you can put a trailer hitch in the back. This is an independence tool," Nunan said.
