86-95 Suzuki Samurai Replacement U-bolts, Stock and Extended Length (SKU# SSP-UB) Installation Instructions CAUTION: Safety glasses should be worn at all times when working with vehicles and related tools and equipment. Suggested Tools: Twin Post Lift (or Floor Jack and 2 Jack Stands) Ratchet (or 1/2 drive Impact Wrench) Socket (or Impact Socket): 17 & 19 mm Torque Wrench, 1/2 Drive For additional copies of these and other instructions go to: www.lowrangeoffroad and click on the Tech and Instructions tab.

Replacing Front U-Bolts Lifting and Supporting the Vehicle Lifting Option 1 Lift and support the vehicle on a twin post, frame contact, lift. FORWARD Front Positioning Rear Positioning

Lifting Option 2 Lift the front of the vehicle with a floor jack and support it on safety stands. Front Floor Jack Tech Tip When working on suspension, brakes or drive train parts it is a good idea to spray all fasteners with penetrating oil a day ahead. If not done a day ahead, an hour or even minutes before is helpful.

Front Suspension Parts Identification U-Bolts (2) Lower Shock Flat Washers (2) Shock Absorber Lower Shock Bushings (2) Lower Shock Nut Center Bolt U-Bolt Plate Leaf Spring Assembly U-Bolt Nut & Lock Washer (4) Lower Shock Mount Figure B

Beginning on the DRIVER Side Disconnecting the Lower Shock Mount (Optional) If the shock absorber is not connected to the U-Bolt Plate or you chose not to disconnect the lower end of the shock absorber, skip to Step 4. (Disconnecting the lower shock mount is optional.) Step 1 Begin disconnecting the lower shock absorber by removing the nut using a 17 mm ratcheting box end wrench (or socket). Step 2 Remove the flat washer. Step 3 Disconnect the bottom of the shock. Step 4 The Samurai we were working with did not have a stabilizer bar on it. If the vehicle you are working with has a stabilizer bar, simply remove the bolts shown by the arrows and let the stabilizer bar drop down out of the way.

Replacing Driver Side U-Bolts Step 5 Remove the (4) driver side U-bolt nuts and lock washers using a 17 mm socket. Note: If the vehicle you are working with has a SPOA (Spring Over Axle) set up, you will need to support the axle with a jack stand before removing these nuts. Step 6 Remove the U-Bolt plate. Note: If the shock absorber is still connected to the U-Bolt plate, simply leave it connected and the U-bolt plate will remain in its general location. Alternatively, the shock could be disconnected from the lower shock mount at this time if desired. Spring Pad Step 7 Remove the (2) U-bolts. Step 8 Insure that the center bolt of the leaf spring remains properly positioned in the spring pad of the front axle assembly. Note: These photographs were taken of a Samurai that we converted from a stock spring under axle to a SPOA (Spring Over Axle) set up. But the principal is the same for either set up.

Passenger Side Driver Side Tech Tip The (2) PASSENGER side U-Bolts are larger than the (2) DRIVER side U-Bolts. Step 9 Position the U-Bolt plate on the opposite side of the leaf spring from the front axle assembly. Install the supplied SMALLER U-Bolts. Then Install the supplied (4) lock washers and (4) nuts. Step 10 Snug the nuts in a criss-cross fashion using a 19 mm socket. The number of U-bolt threads showing above the nuts should be uniform among the 4 U-bolt ends. Using a torque wrench, continue tightening until 43.5 to 57.5 ft. lbs. is reached. Tech Tip 10 If there are more than 8 to 10 threads extending above the nuts, cut them off using a die grinder and cut-off wheel. Caution: Be sure to use eye and face protection when using a cut-off wheel.

Step 11 Reconnect the lower shock absorber if disconnected earlier and torque the nut 25.5 to 39.5 ft. lbs. Step 12 Repeat Steps 1 through 11 on the PASSENGER side. Step 13 Reconnect the stabilizer bar if equipped. Torque the bolts 51 to 65 ft. lbs. Caution!! U-Bolt nuts may become loose within the first 500 miles of operation. Therefore it is critical that they be checked and re-torqued if necessary at the end of the first 500 miles after installation.

Replacing Rear U-Bolts Lifting and Supporting the Vehicle Lifting Option 1 Lift and support the vehicle on a twin post, frame contact, lift. FORWARD Front Positioning Rear Positioning

Lifting Option 2 Lift the rear of the vehicle with a floor jack and support it on safety stands. Rear Floor Jack Step 14 The rear U-Bolts are removed and replaced the same way as the front. The only difference between the front and rear U-Bolts is that the rear U-Bolts are all the same size. Congratulations! You have successfully replaced the U-Bolts on your Samurai. We hope these instructions have been helpful. If you have suggestions on how we could improve our products or instructions please email us at sales@lowrangeoffroad.com or call Tech Support. The number is listed at the bottom of each page. Note: Don t not forget to check and retorque the U-Bolts after the first 500 miles.
