Prime Mover & Semi Trailer/Converter Dolly These diagrams show the location and description of various mechanical and safety features for a Prime Mover and the Semi-trailer/Converter Dolly.

Avoids Imminent Crash Crashes are rare events. Even defensive drivers, will be surprised by road users, actually violating orderly behaviour. Defensive drivers, keep enough space in reserve to avoid a crash, should their own or another driver s, judgement fail. Other road users are alerted to imminent danger. T Brake failure Tyre failure Fire Traffic emergency [eg: on-coming vehicle on incorrect side of road]; or Skids. his may involve sounding the horn or flashing the headlights. Imminent danger means: When other road users start to violate orderly behaviour, sufficient stopping space is maintained to avoid crashing. Stopping is considered safer than swerving to avoid a crash, provided sufficient space is available. The following table lists braking distances (at 60% efficiency) at various speeds. To help with judging these distances while driving, the equivalent travel times are listed. Just as two seconds can be used to judge following distance, these times can be used to judge braking distances. BRAKE DISTANCE CHART VEHICLE TYPE SPEED 100 km/hr SPEED 80 km/hr SPEED 60 km/hr SPEED 20 km/hr REACTION TIME.75 of a second (average) 20m 16m 12m 4m B-DOUBLE 192.4m 112.1m 18.1m 10.3m RIGID TRUCK 105.0m 56.7m 24.6m 3.2m ARTICULATED TRUCK 86.4m 49.0m 25.0m 2.0m COACH 73.8m 45.1m 22.3m 1.4m 4 WHEEL DRIVE 56.5m 37.6m 23.8m 2.7m MOTOR CYCLE 40.2m 24.4m 13.7m 3.6m CAR 37.2m 27.2m 17.2m 3.3m To obtain overall stopping distance, add reaction time to brake distance. NOTE :.75 of a second was achieved as a result of the test driver knowing he would be told to stop. In reality, the reaction time would be 1 2 seconds, or none at all.
