HARMONICS & POWER FACTOR Harmonics and low power factor are the two most negative roadblocks to good power quality because they reduce energy efficiency, reliability and cost effectiveness. Harmonics Variable frequency drives (VFDs) are electronic devices designed to control the speed of motors by changing the frequency of the supplied power. These drives along with other devices, create harmonics when converting voltage from AC to DC and can damage equipment and infrastructure by creating power distortions that affect the whole electrical system. With several billion VFDs in operation, they are a primary source of harmonics. Negative Results of Harmonics & Low Power Factor 1. Wasted Power: Utility companies around the world use power factor (kva) as the main indicator and multiplier to measure and penalize their inefficient customers. These penalties increase exponentially as a facility s power factor decreases, resulting in very high electrical costs. Harmonics and low power factor = higher kva and kw consumed 2. Additional Capital Costs: Capacitor banks are commonly used to improve power factor but are expensive to maintain and have short lifespans. Capacitor banks can even amplify harmonics and only have a maximum power factor achieved is only 93%. Active filters are often used to suppress harmonics but only have a small effect on low power factor. Active filters and 18-Pulse VFDs are very expensive to purchase, operate and maintain; the harmonic mitigation is virtually the same as the P1Advantage TM. 3. Premature Equipment Failure: With harmonics in the electrical system, power transformers become less efficient, consume more power and can start on fire; power surges can destroy VFDs; vibration and heat in motors cause premature burnout. The Technology The P1Advantage improves the power system by mitigating harmonics (THDi) caused by non-linear loads. When operated within designed parameters, THDi is typically reduced by over 80% resulting in an average THDi of less than 5%, while simultaneously correcting power factor to over 99%.
