4 Intended Use The 1/2-Ton Manual Chain Hoist is a portable lifting device that is operated by a hand chain.it is for vertical use only. The chain hoist is suitable for use in garages, workshops, and warehouses for loading and unloading goods. It is especially useful for lifting loads in open-air grounds and places where no power supply is available. The chain hoist can be attached to a trolley as a travelling chain hoist. It is suitable for use with a monorail overhead conveying system, hand travelling crane, and jib crane. 5 Important Safety Considerations DO NOT modify the hoist in any way. Unauthorized modification may impair the function and/or safety and could affect the life of the hoist. There are specific applications for which the hoist was designed. Keep the work area clean and dry. Damp or wet work areas can result in injury. Keep children away from work area.do NOT allow children to handle this product. Dress properly.do NOT wear loose clothing or jewelry, which can get caught in moving parts. Contain long hair. Store idle equipment.store the hoist when not in use. Store it in a secure place out of the reach of children. Inspect it for good working condition prior to storage and before re-use. Use the right tool for the job.do NOT attempt to force small equipment to do the work of larger industrial equipment. There are certain applications for which this equipment was designed. It will do the job better and more safely at the capacity for which it was intended. DO NOT modify this equipment, and DO NOT use this equipment for a purpose for which it was not intended. Check for damaged parts. Before using this product, carefully check that it will operate properly and perform its intended function. Check for damaged parts and any other conditions that may affect the operation of this product. Replace damaged or worn parts immediately. DO NOT overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at all times to prevent tripping, falling, back injury, etc. DO NOT use the equipment when tired or under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or medication. A moment of inattention while operating this equipment may result in serious personal injury. Industrial applications must follow OSHA requirements. Specific Operation Warnings DO NOT overload. DO NOT lift personnel. DO NOT lift loads over people. DO NOT walk under a suspended load. DO NOT perform any work on a suspended load that requires a worker to be positioned underneath the suspended load. DO NOT operate the hoist if any damage or malfunctions exist. DO NOT use the hoist load chain as a sling to wrap around the load. DO NOT use the hoist in such a way that could result in shock or impact loads being applied to the hoist. DO NOT attempt to lengthen the load chain or repair a damaged load chain. DO NOT operate beyond the limits of the load chain travel. Page 5 of 10

6 Before Lifting a Load Inspect both the load and hand chains for nicks, gouges, and any type of deformation or damage, and check the load chain for proper lubrication. Inspect hooks for nicks, gouges, deformation of the throat opening, wear on the saddle or load bearing point, and twisting. Inspect hook latches for proper operation or damage. Make sure load slings or other approved single attachments are properly sized, rigged, and seated in the hook saddle. Take up slack carefully. Make sure the load is balanced and load-holding action is secure before continuing. Make sure all persons stay clear of the supported load. Careful inspection should be made to the parts, such as hooks, load chain, braking device, etc. and the lubrication of the block. The chain block can only be put into operation when it is found to be in good condition. Inspect the hooks to see whether they are securely attached. Misalignment of the hooks as well as suspending the load from the hook tip is dangerous and must be avoided. Operating Instructions CAUTION: Ensure the hoist is positioned vertically in line with the load. Having an off center load could cause it to swing and could damage person or property. Make sure the hoist is attached to a suitable support that is capable of holding a fully loaded hoist. Do not exceed the maximum capacity of 1,000 lbs. (1/2 ton). The load chain should be kept absolutely straight vertically, without any twists that could cause it to become tangled. To operate the hoist, stand in the plane of the hand wheel (#9 in diagram) facing the hand chain wheel side of the hoist. To lift the load, pull the hand chain clockwise. To lower the load, pull hand chain counterclockwise. NOTES: o The clicking sound of the pawl (#17) when a load is being raised indicates normal operation. o When the hoist is at maximum capacity, the resistance on the hand chain is always 16kg (35 ¼ lbs). o When you stop pulling the hand chain, the hoist immediately locks, preventing the load from falling. o Do not pull the hand chain in a position at an angle to the plane of the hand wheel. Make sure the hand chain is properly vertical to prevent tangling and turning of the block. o While lifting or lowering a load, the hand chain should be pulled steadily to prevent it from jerking or tangling. o If the hand chain resists and cannot be pulled further, stop operation immediately and check for the cause of the chain s resistance. Possible causes are something tangled in the load, malfunctioning parts of the block, and/or the load exceeds the maximum capacity of the hoist. Page 6 of 10

7 Maintenance Maintain your hoist. It is recommended that the general condition of any hoist be examined before it is used. Keep your hoist in good repair by adopting a program of conscientious repair and maintenance. Have necessary repairs made by qualified service personnel. Clean off the dirt on the chain hoist after use and store it in a dry place to minimize the risk of rust and corrosion. Have a skilled technician clean the parts and lubricate the gears and bearings with grease once a year. Transition fit is applied to the Stay A (part # 3) and the Right Side Plate (part # 2). DO NOT dismantle these parts, or the hoist will not operate. After cleaning and repairing, the hoist should be subjected to a no-load test and a heavy load test. A chain hoist can be put into operation after it has been tested and found in good condition. No-Load Test: Raise and lower the hook through the full lift height for at least one complete cycle. Verify that all the mechanism works well without malfunction and no abnormal sound. Dynamic Load Test: Raise and lower the test load through the full lift height for at least one complete cycle. Make sure the hoist meet the following requirement: o A good meshing between the hoist chain and the chain wheel, the hand chain and the hand chain wheel. o The mechanism runs smoothly with no abnormal sound. o Ensure the chain not getting twisted during Raise and lower o No obvious change of the manual force when lifting. o The ratchet brake is moving yare, safe and trusty, without malfunction. Keep clean the friction surfaces of the brake while lubricating or operating the hoist. The brake mechanism should be inspected regularly for prevention of faulty braking and falling of the load. 9 Limited Warranty Northern Tool and Equipment Company, Inc. ("We'' or '"Us'') warrants to the original purchaser only ("You'' or Your ) that the Ironton product purchased will be free from material defects in both materials and workmanship, normal wear and tear excepted, for a period of one year from date of purchase. The foregoing warranty is valid only if the installation and use of the product is strictly in accordance with product instructions. There are no other warranties, express or implied, including the warranty of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. If the product does not comply with this limited warranty, Your sole and exclusive remedy is that We will, at our sole option and within a commercially reasonable time, either replace the product without charge to You or refund the purchase price (less shipping). This limited warranty is not transferable. Limitations on the Warranty This limited warranty does not cover: (a) normal wear and tear; (b) damage through abuse, neglect, misuse, or as a result of any accident or in any other manner; (c) damage from misapplication, overloading, or improper installation; (d) improper maintenance and repair; and (e) product alteration in any manner by anyone other than Us, with the sole exception of alterations made pursuant to product instructions and in a workmanlike manner. Obligations of Purchaser You must retain Your product purchase receipt to verify date of purchase and that You are the original purchaser. To make a warranty claim, contact Us at , identify the product by make and model number, and follow the claim instructions that will be provided. The product and the purchase receipt must be provided to Us in order to process Your warranty claim. Any returned product that is replaced or refunded by Us becomes our property. You will be responsible for return shipping costs or costs related to Your return visit to a retail store. Remedy Limits Product replacement or a refund of the purchase price is Your sole remedy under this limited warranty or any other warranty related to the product. We shall not be liable for: service or labor charges or damage to Your property incurred in removing or replacing the product; any damages, including, without limitation, damage es to tangible personal property or personal injury, related to Your improper use, installation, or maintenance of the product; or any indirect, incidental or consequential damages of any kind for any reason. Assumption of Risk You acknowledge and agree that any use of the product for any purpose other than the specified use(s) stated in the product instructions is at Your own risk. Governing Law This limited warranty gives You specific legal rights, and You also may have other rights which vary from state to state. Some states do not allow limitations or exclusions on implied warranties or incidental or consequential damages, so the above limitations may not apply to You. This limited warranty is governed by the laws of the State of Minnesota, without regard to rules pertaining to conflicts of law.
