1 AutoSteer Installation Guide Covers AutoSteer (IK# Rev 01) installation on the following tractors: AutoFarm NOVARIANT INC Willow Road, Menlo Park/CA JD-7720 MFWD JD-7820 MFWD JD-7920 MFWD P# Rev /2005 1

2 Introduction This installation guide specifies the correct mounting positions for all the AutoSteer brackets and hardware on the machine. Refer to an AutoFarm Wheeled Tractor Installation Manual for full details on cable connections, AutoSteer system startup and calibration. Attention Tighten all screws, bolts, nuts, hose connections and cable connections after final assembly of AutoSteer system on machine. Special Requirements The tractor must be equipped with Power Beyond ports before starting your AutoSteer installation. If the tractor does not have a factory installed power beyond, you must order and install the John Deere power beyond accessory kit before starting the AutoSteer installation. 2

3 Special Tools Required 1. Metric Allen keys including larger 10-12mm sizes 2. Soft brush 3. Clean rags 4. Oil collection pan (for collecting oil when hose connections are opened) 5. Metric open wrenches 6. Metric socket wrenches up to 24mm 3

5 General Installation Sequence 1. Install the roof array on cab roof and rout antenna cables into the cab 2. Install the monitor 3. Install the cab box and power cable 4. Connect the monitor cable and antenna cables on cab box 5. Install the AutoSteer valve 6. Install all the hydraulic hoses 7. Install the steering cable between cab box and valve 8. Install the wheel angle sensor on front axle 9. Connect the cable between the valve and the wheel angle sensor 10. Check all hose and cable connections 11. Turn on the engine and check manual steering right and left and check for oil leaks. 12. Turn on the Cab Box and verify if AutoSteer display is working 13. Select wheeled tractor for vehicle type when prompted 14. Adjust the wheel angle sensor for correct counts between a hard left and hard right turn 15. Verify if the wheels turn right and left in AutoSteer calibration mode. 16. Follow complete AutoSteer calibration procedures before delivering machine to customer. 5

9 Roof Array Installed Secure the roof array using the two original tractor bolts through these holes Install the roof array with the single GPS antenna on the right side of the tractor RIGHT LEFT 9

10 Radio Antenna Radio Modem Wip Antenna Roof array 1. Install the radio wip antenna on the roof array as shown above 2. Remember to install rubber ring between the antenna and the base mount. 3. Hand tighten the antenna onto the threaded base. Do not use tools. WARNING! To avoid electrical shock hazard, the wip antenna must be removed from the cab roof before transporting the tractor on a truck or trailer and before driving the tractor under low objects and electrical power lines. 10

15 Assembling the Monitor Arm AutoFarm Monitor Slider plate Mounting Plate Adjustable Monitor Arm 1. Mount the monitor onto the adjustable arm as shown above. 2. The monitor is secured to the mounting plate with three nuts. 15

18 Wheel Angle Sensor Assembly Wheel angle sensor (potentiometer) Connector for cable Ball joints This hole is for mounting on existing bolt on right side tie rod Hole for securing the cable with cable tie Tie rod bracket This hole is for mounting on existing bolt on differential housing Linkage rod (adjust length to 10.5 Between centers) Bracket for the wheel angle sensor Linkage arm (adjust length to 5.5 Between centers) Pre-assemble the wheel angle sensor with the linkages and brackets as shown above. Do not tighten bolts and nuts because it will require Adjustments after being installed on the tractor s front axle. Note: kit shown above is for the heavy duty two piece twelve bolt pattern front axle. Other types of front axles might require special parts. 18

19 Remove this bolt on right side of the differential housing on right side of front axle (JD-7920). You will use this same bolt for securing the wheel angle sensor bracket. 19

21 Mounting the tie rod bracket Tie rod (right side) Bolt Mount the bracket in the position shown above using the existing bolt & nut. Use the flat washer provided between the nut and the bracket. If the bolt is too short, replace with longer bolt of same grade. 21

22 Wheel angle Sensor Final Assembly & adjustments 1. Mount the wheel angle sensor and linkages as shown above 2. Connect the cable to the sensor (see cable identification figure in this manual) 3. Adjust the arm & rod lengths to obtain between 3400 and 3800 counts from the wheel angle sensor during steering calibration procedure 3. Check if wheel angle sensor has sufficient travel for hard left and hard right turns. 4. Tighten all nuts and bolts. 22

Use the back plate provided in your Kit behind the larger hole. You will have to drill one hole in tractor steel plate for the bolt on the Left. 25

Mount the valve onto the bracket in the position shown using the three long 3/8 socket head screws provided. The screw heads must be mounted behind the bracket and the washers and nuts must be mounted over the front of the valve. The screw must not touch the fuel tank after assembly. 2. Mount the bracket onto the steel floor panel in front on the fuel tank under the right side of the tractor cab. 3. Secure the bracket onto existing holes on the steel floor panel using the bolts provided. Use the backplate to secure the bolt through the large hole on tractor. 4. Brackets shipped since 01/2005 use three mounting bolts and have an extra hole on the left side as shown. The bolt shown on the left requires drilling a 3/8 or larger diameter hole on tractor plate. 26

30 Installing the Pressure Transducer Connector for cable Pressure transducer for detecting manual steering pressure ¼ NPT Elbow Adapter AutoSteer valve Install the pressure transducer in the position shown above. Use the 90 degree elbow adapter so that the pressure transducer is in a protected position close to the valve. Use Teflon tape on the threads to prevent oil leaks (you can use liquid thread sealer if you prefer). 30

32 AutoSteer Hose Kit Identification Your AutoSteer installation kit is supplied with all the necessary hoses and adapters to complete the installation on the tractor. You will also change the position of two existing hoses on the tractor as part of your installation. P Pressure on tractor T Return on tractor Connect these ends to the AutoSteer valve at the ports identified as shown LS Load Sense on Tractor Connect these ends to tractor RIGHT Right steering cylinder on tractor Steer Out hoses LEFT Left steering cylinder on tractor Note: The steer in hoses going from the tractor steering unit to the AutoSteer valve will be the original hoses already installed on the tractor. You must disconnect the two hoses from the steer cylinder on the front axle and connected the same hose directly to the SL & SR ports on the AutoSteer valve. This feature allows us to use only five special AutoSteer hoses instead of the usual seven hoses. 32

33 Connecting Hoses to Power Beyond on Tractor Pressure Port (Metric M22 thread) Load Sense Port (Metric M12 thread) Return/Tank Port (Metric M22 thread) 1. The hydraulic oil supply for the AutoSteer valve is obtained from the Power Beyond ports on the tractor. 2. These ports must be already installed on the tractor before starting your AutoSteer installation. 3. Locate the power beyond ports at the back left side of the tractor as shown in picture above. 2. Install the metric hose adapters provided in your installation kit. Use metric Allen key tool to remove plugs. 3. Rout the three hoses (pressure/return/load sense) between the AutoSteer valve and the power beyond ports. 4. Connect the hoses to the power beyond outlets and the AutoSteer valve. 5. Secure the hoses with cable ties away from moving parts. 33

34 Steering Cable Identification Connect to pressure transducer & solenoids on AutoSteer valve Connect to Proportional (blue) valve on AutoSteer valve Connect to Wheel Angle Sensor On front axle Connects to Cab Box The steering cable sends electrical steering commands from the cab box to the main AutoSteer valve to turn the tractor wheels. Connect the cable between the cab box and the steering valve according to the connector identifications shown above. Rout the cable away from hot or moving parts and secure with cable ties. 34

35 Calibration and Tuning Notes Select Wheeled Tractor option during initial AutoSteer setup and calibration. Measure all the lever arm distances and input the values during AutoSteer setup and calibration procedure. If the hydraulic system is correctly installed and the pressure transducer has been calibrated, then the system should easily switch from AutoSteer Mode to Manual Steer Mode when you try to turn the steering wheel in AutoSteer mode. 35
