1 May 20, 1991 YEAR MODEL VIN APPLICATION BULLETIN NO NSX ALL NSX Special Tools The following tools are required to properly service the NSX, in addition to the tools you initially received by automatic shipment. Whether you purchase all of these tools or not, and when you purchase them, will depend on the volume and type of NSX service work you do. Update your NSX Service Manual by making changes, or a note referring to this bulletin, on the pages listed. Regulator with Pressure Gauge, Hose, and Adapter (VTEC Inspection Tool) This tool is not available from American Honda. You must purchase its components from local sources. The tool is used to check the rocker arms (VTEC system) on the NSX engine. Use it with VTEC Plug 07MAJ-PR7020A that was automatically shipped. Write See Tool Service Bulletin on page 6-53, step 2 in your NSX Service Manual. VTEC Inspection Tool Components Snap-on Known Sources Grainger Call Add fitting to fit your shop s air chucks. 2 Engine Removal/Installation Fixture (Not Shown in NSX Service Manual) This fixture will be automatically shipped to all Acura dealers. It is not part of the engine removal procedure in the NSX Service Manual. To learn how to use it, watch the Engine videotape from the NSX New Model Intro series (shipped to all dealers in 1990 as an ACURA Advantage release). The videotape shows a prototype of the fixture. The final version can be set up in one of the following three ways: HOLES FOR CASTERS 1. Purchase 4 of the casters described here (or their equivalent), and install them in the pre-drilled holes in each corner of the fixture. This is the most convenient way to use the fixture (no other equipment is needed), and it s the least expensive, unless you already have either a lifting table (see 2.) or a platform truck (see 3.). Caster Specifications Known Source Wheel: Stem: 3 x 1 1/2 Threaded, 1/2-13 x 2 1/2 working length. Load rating: 350 lb. or more. Darnell Corp. In CA, call DAR-NELL Outside CA, call 800 DAR-NELL H 2. If you have a lifting table (OTC P/N 1585, or equivalent), you can use it (instead of casters) to support the fixture. Secure the fixture to it with at least two 12 mm diameter bolts, one on each side. 3. If you have a platform truck ( warehouse cart ) with 2 x 4 platform, 1500 lb. capacity, and removable handle, you can use it (instead of casters) to support the fixture. Drill holes in the platform and secure the fixture to it with at least two 12 mm diameter bolts, one on each side. 2 of

3 40 mm Wrench for Locknut on Rack Guide Screw (Electric Power Steering) The 40 mm locknut wrench (T/N 07MAA-SL0010A) listed in the Service Manual is not available from American Honda. Instead, use the 40 mm wrench provided for 91 Legend (T/N SA50001) to loosen and tighten the locknut on the rack guide screw. The locknut must be tightened securely, but doing it in combination with a torque wrench as shown in the Service Manual is not necessary. Cross out 07MAA-SL0010A and write in SA50001 on the following pages of your NSX Service Manual: page 17-2, Ref. No. 2. page 17-7, 2nd column, picture in step 5. page 17-70, last 2 pictures in step 4. RACK GUIDE SCREW 40 mm LOCKNUT WRENCH 07MAA-SL0010A 40 mm LOCKNUT WRENCH SA mm Wrench for Locknut on Rack Guide Screw (Manual Steering) The 43 mm locknut wrench (T/N 07MAA-SL0020A) listed in the Service Manual is not available from American Honda. Instead, you must purchase a 1 5/8 crowfoot wrench, (either open-end or flare nut type) from a local source. A conventional 1 5/8 wrench is acceptable, but will generally cost more than the crowfoot style. This wrench is used to loosen and tighten the locknut on the steering rack guide screw of an NSX manual steering gearbox. Previous wrenches are too small. The guide screw locknut must be tightened securely, but doing it in combination with a torque wrench as shown in the Service Manual is not necessary. Cross out the tool number and write Use a 1 5/8 wrench on the following pages in your NSX Service Manual: page 17-2, Ref. No. 3. page 17-7, 1st column, picture in step 5. page 17-28, picture in step 25. RACK GUIDE SCREW Known Source Snap-on Tools 1 5/8 (43 mm) Flare nut wrench: AN A 1 5/8 (43 mm) Open-end wrench: FC52A of 6

4 50 mm Wrench for Locknut on Steering Pinion Set Screw (Manual Steering) The 50 mm locknut wrench (T/N 07MAA-SL0030A) listed in the Service Manual is not available from American Honda. Instead, you must purchase a 1 15/16 crowfoot wrench (either open-end or flare nut type) from a local source. A conventional 1 15/16 wrench is acceptable, but will generally cost more than the crowfoot style. This wrench is used to loosen and tighten the locknut on the pinion set screw of an NSX manual steering gearbox. The set screw locknut must be tightened securely, but doing it in combination with a torque wrench as shown in the Service Manual is not necessary. Cross out the tool number and write in Use a 1 15/16 wrench on the following pages: page 17-2, Ref. No. 4. page 17-23, picture in step 7. page 17-27, picture in step 20. PINION SET SCREW (under wrench) Known Source Snap-on Tools 1 15/16 (50 mm) Flare nut wrench AN A 1 15/16 (50 mm) Open-end wrench FC62A Wrench for Set Screw on Steering Pinion Shaft (Manual Steering) We ve substituted an existing motorcycle locknut wrench (T/N ME90000) for the pinion screw wrench (T/N 07MAA-SL0040A) shown in the Service Manual. The substitute wrench was automatically shipped to all Acura dealers. This wrench is used to remove and install the set screw (collar) on the pinion shaft of an NSX manual steering gearbox. It s also used in combination with a torque wrench to set the pinion bearing preload. Cross out 07MAA-SL0040A and write in Locknut Wrench ME90000 on the following pages: page 17-2, Ref. No. 5. page 17-23, picture in step 8. page 17-26, pictures in steps 17 and 19. page 17-27, picture in step 20 SET SCREW DUST SEAL PINION SET SCREW WRENCH (MOTORCYCLE LOCKNUT WRENCH T/N ME9000) Used to remove the set screw and to set pinion bearing preload. 4 of

5 Inspection Tool for Differential Clutch Discs (T/N 07MAJ-PR90100) This tool is available from American Honda but it will not be automatically shipped to dealers. It s used for checking the condition ( slip torque) of the clutch discs in an NSX differential on the bench. (Checking a differential in the car requires only a torque wrench and socket.) It s also used to hold the differential in a vise, and to check bearing preload after differential-related repairs. If you think you ll need it, order through your Parts Department. How to use the tool is shown in the Service Manual on pages 15-4, 6, 11, and 13. TORQUE WRENCH TORQUE WRENCH 07MAJ-PR90100 Checking preset ( slip ) torque and differential bearing preload. Torque Degree Gauge This tool is not available from American Honda. You must purchase one from a local source. The tool compensates for friction and stretch (which can result in false torque readings) when torquing the nuts on rod bearing cap bolts during engine reassembly. How to use the gauge is shown in the Service Manual on page GAUGE Source Snap-on Tools Torque angle gauge TA of 6

6 Electric Power Steering Test Set (07MAJ-SL0000A) This tool will not be automatically shipped to Acura dealers. You may not need it because very few NSXs have power steering (only those with A/T). A limited number of test sets are available for ordering. If you prefer, we can also lend you a set to help diagnose a specific power steering problem. The set, T/N 07MAJ-SL0000A, includes the three test harnesses and power unit checker shown below. How to connect the harnesses is shown below and in the Service Manual on page How to use them is described on Troubleshooting pages through 61.
