1 CEMA proposal for clarification of for TA of R&S vehicles with their mechanical couplings WGAT

2 EDITORIAL CHANGES It is not questioned that type approval of R&S vehicles with their mechanical couplings is possible, certainly as the necessary ISO standards are present. However as in the past the text has always been adapted for tractors only, some changes are necessary. Most are pure editorial. In some points it is proposed to replace tractor with vehicle to clarify that it is applicable to T, R and S vehicles. In some points it is proposed to add For mechanical couplings mounted on tractors to clarify that it is ONLY applicable for the tractor side 07 October 2015 Page 2

3 It is essential to explain reference centre also for towed vehicles (R&S) as it is used in other points in relation to the application of load and that are applicable for T, R and S vehicles Reference centre of mechanical coupling means the point on the pin axis which is equidistant from the wings in the case of a fork and the point resulting from the intersection of the plane of symmetry of the hook with the generatrix of the concave part of the hook at the level of contact with the ring when this is in the traction position. In the case of mechanical couplings mounted on towed vehicles, reference centre of mechanical coupling means the point of intersection between the vertical axis passing through the centre of the device hole and the centerline plane of the cylindrical or rounded device head. 4 EDITORIAL CHANGES To make the text suitable for all vehicle categories Appendix 2 Mechanical Coupling Dynamic Test Method 3. Test procedure requirements 3.1. General requirements The test force shall be applied to the mechanical coupling devices being tested by means of an appropriate standard drawbar ring beneath an angle formed by the position of the vertical test load F v vis-à-vis the horizontal test load F h in the direction of the median longitudinal plane passing from top front to bottom rear. The test force shall be applied at the usual point of contact between the mechanical coupling device of the tractor and the related drawbar ring of the towed vehicle, The play between the coupling device of the tractor and the related ring, shall be kept to a minimum. 07 October 2015 Page 4

5 With the introduction of mechanical couplings for R&S vehicles the load application on the corresponding mechanical couplings, for tractors and towed vehicles needs to be specified. A new point 3.3 is proposed: Appendix 2 Mechanical Coupling Dynamic Test Method 3.3 load application For components of the mechanical coupling on tractor or towed vehicle, the load is applied using the components of the corresponding mechanical couplings on respectively towed vehicle or tractor as permitted by the combinations listed in Table 2 of Appendix October 2015 Page 5
