3 STATE OF MICHIGAN 1997 MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT CODEBOOK INTRODUCTION This code book documents data sets describing motor vehicle accidents that occurred in the State of Michigan during calendar year The data sets were developed by the Transportation Data Center at the University of Michigan s Transportation Research Institute from data supplied by the Michigan State Police. The cooperation of that agency is gratefully acknowledged. Two separate data set categories have been built from the original Motor Vehicle Accident data supplied by the state. 1) All reported accidents that occurred in Michigan in 1997, known as the Census data. 2) All accidents in which at least one truck supplement record was found. Vehicles which did not match the vehicle number on the truck supplement record were given not applicable code values for truck supplement variables. 4 Michigan 1997 Introduction 1) The Accident data set (described by variables 1 through 73) includes one record for each accident. General accident information not specific to any vehicle or its occupants is found in this data set (e.g., time of day, accident type, etc.). 2) The Vehicle data set (described by variables 1 through 73, and 100 through 159) includes one record for every "traffic unit" (motor vehicles, pedestrians, pedalcyclists, etc.) involved in the accident. Variables 100 through 159 describe specific characteristics of the traffic unit, while 1 through 73 repeat the accident description. The truck data variables (described by variables 200 through 224), enumerated in the Vehicle data set immediately following the Census data set univariates, include one record for every traffic unit involved in an accident where a supplemental truck record was present. 3) The Occupant data set (described by variables 1 through 73, 100 through 159, and 300 through 311) includes one record for every driver or injured occupant involved in the accident. Some uninjured, non-driver occupants are present as well. Variables 300 through 311 describe specific characteristics of the traffic unit occupants, while 1 through 73, and 100 through 159, repeat the accident and traffic unit descriptions. The truck data set will also include variables 200 through 224, repeating the truck supplement traffic unit descriptions. This codebook documents the variable names and code values for all the individual Michigan data sets. The univariate frequency counts and percentages for each variable apply to the Census data sets and to the truck vehicle data set where applicable. 5 Introduction Michigan 1997 convention should be noted: frequencies for variables 1 through 73 were derived from the Accident data set, frequencies for variables 100 through 159 were derived from the Vehicle data set, frequencies for variables 200 through 224 were derived from the Truck Vehicle data set, and frequencies for variables 300 through 311 were derived from the Occupant data set. The definitions of the code values described in the codebook were taken from a document known as the "Official State of Michigan Crash File Layout" (last revision May 22, 1995) that was produced by the Data Processing Section of the Michigan Criminal Justice Data Center. Other code definitions are selfexplanatory counters that the Transportation Data Center has included as an aid for analysts. Unlabeled code values indicate erroneous coding in the data received. While every effort has been made to provide accurate, reliable data, inconsistencies may arise from the source data or from the reformatting procedures used. Consequently, the Data Center cannot guarantee the accuracy of the data but will try to resolve any discrepancies that are found.
