This may vary depending on the condition of the vehicle and the equipment in it. Important information These installation instructions are primarily designed for use within the BMW dealership organisation and by authorised BMW service companies. These installation instructions are intended for use by qualified specialist staff trained on BMW vehicles with the relevant expert knowledge. All work must be completed using the latest BMW repair manuals, wiring diagrams, servicing manuals and work instructions, in a logical order, using the prescribed tools (special tools) and observing current health and safety regulations. 09/06 (T/Z)

2 If you experience installation or function problems, restrict troubleshooting to approx. 0.5 hours for mechanical work and.0 hour for electrical work. To avoid unnecessary extra work and/or costs, send an inquiry straight away to the technical parts support team via the Aftersales Assistance Portal (ASAP). Quote the following information: - Chassis number, - Retrofit kit part number, - A detailed description of the problem, - any work already carried out. Do not archive the hard copy of these installation instructions since daily updates are provided via ASAP. Pictograms Denotes instructions that draw your attention to dangers.! Installation information Ensure that the cables and/or lines are not kinked or damaged as you install them in the car. Costs arising from this will not be reimbursed by BMW AG. Additional cables/lines that you install must be secured with cable ties. All pictures show LHD cars; proceed accordingly on RHD cars. Ordering instructions Can generally be installed in all vehicles. The parts below can be taken over from the existing steering wheel, or else must be ordered and exchanged for the vehicle-specific SAs. Note the relevant table marked "M Sport steering wheel" and associated add-on parts. When exchanging the airbag unit, it does not require decoding. When installing with SA 48 (steering wheel heating), the heating function no longer works and no decoding is required. The switch for steering wheel heating remains without function. - / Series cars with basic steering wheel, leather steering wheel (SA 40), Sport steering wheel (SA 55) Airbag unit, multi-function keys and possibly shift paddles as well as steering wheel electronics (cable, control unit, vibration generators) must be ordered for an M Sport steering wheel and replaced. - Series cars with M Sport steering wheel (SA 70) built before 03/4 Airbag unit, multi-function keys and possibly shift paddles as well as steering wheel electronics (cable, control unit, vibration generators) must be ordered for an M Sport steering wheel and replaced. - Series cars built after 03/4 with M Sport steering wheel (SA 70) and Series cars with M Sport steering wheel (SA 70) Takeover of all parts possible. - 3 / 4 Series car and X5/X6 vehicles with basic steering wheel, leather steering wheel (SA 40), Sport steering wheel (SA 55) Airbag unit, multi-function keys and possibly shift paddles as well as steering wheel electronics (cable, control unit, vibration generators) must be ordered for an M Sport steering wheel and replaced. - 3 / 4 Series and X5/X6 cars with M Sport steering wheel (SA 70) Takeover of all parts possible. 09/06 (T/Z)

7 3. Removal of the steering wheel Loosen and remove the screw () on the back of the steering wheel (). F0 035 V Loosen and remove the screws (). Slightly press in the clip () on both sides and remove the finisher (3). 3 F0 034 V 4 4 The cabling of the standard steering wheel must be adopted in the identical configuration for the M Performance steering wheel A F0 036 V A control unit is then present only if lane departure or lane change warning and/or steering wheel heating is installed. Disconnect the earth cable (). Loosen and remove the screw () on the earth cable. Only if Sport automatic shift paddles (SA TB) are installed: Loosen the plugs (3) from the holders and pull them out. Remove the screws (4) from the shift paddles (5) and remove the shift paddles (5). Only if lane change warning (SA 5AG) or lane departure warning (SA 5AD) or DRIVING ASSIS- TANT (SA 5AS) is installed: disconnect the plug (6) from the vibration generator. Only if steering wheel heating (SA 48) is installed: remove the plug (7) from the control unit (8). For all cars: remove the wiring harness. 09/06 (T/Z) 7

Removal of the steering wheel Only if lane change warning (SA 5AG) or lane departure warning (SA 5AD) or DRIVING ASSIS- TANT (SA 5AS) is installed: If there is a piece of foam on the vibration generator (), this must be removed and re-installed during installation. Remove the clamp spring () from the vibration generator () and remove the vibration generator (). The clamp spring () must not be re-used.! F0 040 V For all cars: Loosen and remove the screws () on the back of the steering wheel (). Remove the rear cover (3). Remove the steering wheel (). 3 F0 037 V 09/06 (T/Z) 8

9 4. Installation of the M Performance steering wheel Position the multi-function keys () under the M Performance steering wheel A. A F0 038 V A Place the rear cover () on top, and screw the screws () through the M Performance steering wheel A into the multi-function keys. F0 039 V Only if lane change warning (SA 5AG) or lane departure warning (SA 5AD) or DRIVING ASSIS- TANT (SA 5AS) is installed: If there was a piece of foam on the vibration generator (), this must be re-inserted. Insert the vibration generator () and secure with the enclosed clamp spring B. B F0 04 V 09/06 (T/Z) 9

10 4. Installation of the M Performance steering wheel For all cars: The cabling of the standard steering wheel must be adopted in the identical configuration for the M Performance steering wheel A. Insert the wiring harness Secure the earth cable () with screw () and connect to contact (3). Only if Sport automatic shift paddles (SA TB) are installed: Secure shift paddles (4) with screws (5). 9 F0 04 V Connect plug (6) to plug (7) and clip into the brackets. Only if lane change warning (SA 5AG) or lane departure warning (SA 5AD) or DRIVING ASSIS- TANT (SA 5AS) is installed: Insert the plug (8) into the vibration generator. Only if steering wheel heating (SA 48) was installed: place the cable (9) in the foam piece; it is not connected. For all cars: position M Performance finisher C and clip the clip () in on both sides. Secure M Performance finisher C with screws (). C F0 043 V Screw in the screw () on the reverse of the M Performance steering wheel A. A F0 044 V 09/06 (T/Z) 0

11 5. Concluding work and coding The retrofit system does not require coding. - Fit M Performance steering wheel as per ISTA No Connect the battery - Conduct a brief test - Conduct a function test 09/06 (T/Z)
