3 The Uniroyal concept for commercial vehicles Uniroyal commercial vehicle tyres offer the right concept for any task. A broad performance spectrum ensures individual tyre fitment options for every application: light trucks for the shorthaul and regional traffic, trucks in on- and offroad usage, as well as long-distance coach lines. The universal selection for varying conditions of usage is reflected in the new tyre designations, which includes the axle position on the one hand, and the type of usage on the other. The Highway series shines with high mileage in both regional and long-distance transport. Optimum tread patterns on all axles combine to make up an economical overall concept. For use in construction sites, the On-/Off-Road series, with its tyres for steer, drive and trailer axle, has a firm grip also on loose surfaces, and is also particularly durable under the most uncompromising conditions. Uniroyal commercial vehicle tyres, with their durable casings and high mileage performance, are a technically and economically convincing proposition on any axle. 8 Tyre designation idewall markings 1 ize designation in inches or mm; here: 315 = nominal width in mm; 80 = aspect ratio in % (Aspect height/aspect width), R = radial tyre, 22.5 = rim diameter in inches. 2 Nominal operating code. This is made up of the load symbol for single and twin tyre fitments and the speed symbol for the reference speed. 154 means kg per tyre as a single tyre fitment and 150 means kg per tyre in dual fitment. M stands for a max. speed of 130 km/h. 3 Additional service description. On tyres which are suitable for a variety of applications (e.g. on trucks and buses), the permitted load can be increased and the maximum speed reduced, or vice versa. An additional load index is then given for single/twin tyre fitments and a letter for the appropriate reference speed. The additional service description is encircled. 4 Ply rating: Refers to the load capacity type. On crossply tyres this is used to indicate the number of plies in the casing. Today this reference no longer indicates the actual number of plies on a tyre and is not even included in the labelling on newer tyre types. 5 esignates tubeless tyres. 6 esignates regroovable tyres. 7 Refers to the six treadwear indicators in the base of the tread pattern. 8

9 peed designation The speed symbol indicates the speed at which the load capacities corresponding to the load indices apply under specific operating conditions. In the case of light truck tyres (LI 121 and below), the tyre s specified speed can be exceeded with reduced loads. 16 Regrooving recommendations Regrooving On public roads a tread depth of at least 1.6 mm over the entire circumference of the tyre is required. To further increase the service life and economy of Uniroyal tyres, the so-called undertread can be regrooved. The undertread refers to the layer between the top side of the belt and the tread grooves (see figure). Regulation: Provided it is marked REGROOVABLE, a commercial vehicle tyre may be regrooved down to a residual undertread thickness of 2 mm above the breaker or belt. All additional regulations of the respective country have to be met. In order to exploit the full kilometre reserve regrooving affords, it is absolutely essential that the work be carried out in a thoroughly professional manner. This is all the more important if the tyres are to be sub sequently retreaded. Cutting the tread too deeply in the course of regrooving could damage the steel belt, resulting in the formation of rust. Not only is there then a greater danger of tyre failure, but the tyre s retreading suitability is also severely reduced. Added tread depth thanks to regrooving The following should always be adhered to when regrooving: tones or other foreign material lodged in the tread are to be removed. The tread pattern must be maintained at every point on the tyre. There must not be any bald spots. The most worn spot on the tyre determines the depth setting for the regrooving tool. The regrooving depth indicated in the table for the respective tyre size and tread pattern type is to be added to the minimum tread depth. The regrooving knife is set to this combined depth. Only professional regrooving tools should be used. Regrooving operations should always be carried out as shown in the following figures. After regrooving, check the grooves for any sign of exposed belt wire. If the wire is exposed at any point, the tyre may not be used.
