The controllers proportion foam at concentrations from 1 to 6 percent. 4. are listed by Underwriters Laboratory (UL)- Guide Number EX2973. have passed Factory Mutual (FM) field testing. The FM approval is currently pending and will be issued when final testing is complete. Note: are tested as part of a fire extinguishing system and are UL listed and/or FM approved for use with designated foam concentrates, bladder tanks, piping configurations and discharge devices. 5. OPEATION The Viking concentrate controller is a modified venturi device. As water flows through the venturi, it creates an area of lower pressure-referred to as the metering pressure drop. As the water flow increases through the venturi, the metering pressure drop increases, allowing more foam concentrate to enter through the orifice. A decrease in the water flow reduces the metering pressure drop, thereby reducing the foam concentrate flow. Because the foam concentrate flow varies in direct proportion to the water flow, the concentrate controller can accurately proportion foam over a wide range of water flow rates. In order for the controller to operate correctly, the pressure drop through the bladder tank to the controller must be less than the metering pressure drop. A pressure drop of approximately 1 PSI is incurred within the bladder tank. An additional pressure drop results from the sum of the pressure losses in the water supply piping and the foam concentrate piping. Although the 1 PSI pressure drop across the bladder tank can not be reduced, the pressure drop in the piping can be minimized by correctly engineering the concentrate and water supply piping. The graph shown on page 860e defines the metering pressure drop of the 3", 4", 6" and 8" controllers. As an example, 150 gpm of water flow through the 4" controller will create a metering pressure drop of 1.2 psi. In this scenario, the controller will proportion accurately if the pressure drop of the supply water traveling from the water main to the bladder tank; plus the pressure drop across the bladder; plus the pressure drop of the foam concentrate traveling from inside the bladder tank to the concentrate controller; is 1.2 psi or less. Since approximately 1 psi of this pressure drop will result across the bladder, the water supply and concentrate piping must be designed such that the pressure drop within this piping is 0.2 psi or less. See Figure 1. Again, using the graph on page 860e, if the water flow rate through this same 4" controller is only 100 gpm, the metering pressure drop is only 0.55 PSI. Because the metering pressure drop is less than the pressure drop across the bladder alone, the controller will not proportion properly at this flow rate. The flow rate at which the metering pressure drop is just high enough to overcome the pressure losses through the piping and the bladder tank is called the low flow rating. The flow rate through the controller must be at or above it s low flow rating in order to properly proportion foam. A good rule to follow to ensure the piping is designed properly follows: The combined total equivalent length (pipe length plus equivalent lengths for fittings and valves) of the water supply inlet piping and the foam concentrate discharge piping should not exceed 50 equivalent feet or 15.2 meters. The diameter of this piping must be the same size as the foam liquid inlet to the concentrate controller. If the total equivalent length must exceed 50 feet or 15.2 meters, then refer to the Proportioning Device Design Data located in the Design Section of this data book for the method of calculating these pipe sizes. 6. APPLICATION are part of a foam system. In addition to the controller, the main components of the foam system are foam concentrate, a foam storage tank, a water supply, piping, and discharge devices. The discharge devices most commonly used are sprinklers, nozzles and foam chambers. The system must be designed so that the concentrate controller can accurately proportion foam over the range of flow rates expected during the system operation. 7. The controller must be installed with the arrow pointing in the direction of the water flow. Straight piping equal to 4 to 6 pipe diameters should be installed both before and after the concentrate controller to ensure proportioning accuracy. The ideal location for the controller is level with the top discharge and within 3 feet (1 meter) of the tank. The controller can be placed further from the tank providing the pressure drop through the bladder tank does not exceed the metering pressure drop. The pressure drop within the piping can be minimized by: minimizing the number of tees and elbows; minimizing the distance from the bladder tank to the controller; using full port valves; and increasing the pipe diameter. To prevent water from back flowing into the bladder tank, install a swing check valve in the foam concentrate piping and locate the concentrate controller level with the top discharge of the bladder tank. In addition, install a manual or automatic isolation valve in the foam concentrate piping. Viking does not furnish piping with the concentrate controllers and it is the responsibility of the system design engineer to determine the appropriate piping. 10.
