2 Abstract In this test the time taken for flash rust to appear in a climate of approximately 70 degrees Fahrenheit with a relative humidity of percent was determined after blasting steel with untreated water, and then water treated with rust inhibitor ProTXion 19-68V with a ratio of 1 part ProTXion to 99 parts water. A Graco EcoQuip EQm system (part number ) was used with a 25 gallon accessory water tank (part number 26A022) using a #8 nozzle at 100 psi. The abrasive used was garnet at a blast pressure of 100 psi measured at the machine. The results were clear that using ProTXion 19-68V increased the amount of time after blasting before flash rust occurred. Flash rust had occurred on the untreated sample in less than half an hour. There still was no flash rust on the sample blasted with ProTXion 19-68V after 1 month. Even though flash rust did not occur; to prove whether or not we should recommend ProTXion 19-68V thorough testing should be provided to ensure it does not affect coating adherence.

4 1 Introduction A byproduct of Vapor Abrasive Blasting is the rapid onset of flash rust by introducing moisture to the blast stream. The SSPC Protective Coatings Glossary (PCG) defines flash rusting as rusting that occurs on metal within minutes to a few hours after cleaning is complete. The speed with which flash rusting occurs may be indicative of salt contamination on the surface, high humidity, or both. To increase the amount of time blasters have before having to coat a surface after blasting rust inhibitors are commonly used. They are used by dry blasters after blasting using a pressure washer to clean the surface, and are used with Vapor Abrasive blasters by adding it to the water supply so it is applied while blasting eliminating the need of a power washer. The time taken for flash rust to occur in a controlled environment on a sample blasted with only water compared to a sample blasted with water treated with ProTXion 19-68V will be determined. Method A Graco EcoQuip EQm (part number ) was used for testing. A 4 ft. X 4 ft. metal plate with a 3- coat marine finish was used as the substrate. 2 ft. X 2 ft. sections were blasted at 100 psi with a # 8 nozzle and 80 garnet as the abrasive in a controlled environment of approximately 70 degrees Fahrenheit with a relative humidity of percent. The time taken until flash rust appeared was then recorded.
5 2 Procedure First the EQm was loaded with untreated water and one 55 lb bag of 80 garnet. The plate was then blasted using untreated water from the water tank. After blasting the first section the time was recorded. The pressure pot was then completely drained of media and water. The pot was then filled with treated water using a ratio of 1 part ProTXion to 99 parts water from the water tank to ensure proper ratio was held. Initially gallons of water and 0.25 gallons of ProTXion 19-68V was put into the tank. Once the tank reached 5 gallons an additional 19.8 gallons of water and 0.2 gallons of ProTXion was added. This addition of water was continued throughout the test when needed. Once the pressure pot was half full one 55 lb. bag of 80 garnet was added. The second 2 ft. X 2 ft. section was then blasted at 100 psi using the same #8 nozzle being very careful not to blast the first section. Results Flash rust occurred on the untreated sample in less than 30 minutes but still has not occurred on the treated sample in over one month. The flash rust got progressively worse on the untreated sample over the span of that month. Please see Image 1 to see the sample after 20 minutes, and Image 2 to see the sample after one month. 6 3 Conclusion Image 2: Blasted untreated sample showing flash rust after 1 month on right ProTXion 19-68V was successful at extending the time between blasting and coating in a controlled environment. From a visual standpoint, it appears to be a suitable candidate to consider as a rust inhibitor during Vapor Abrasive Blasting. All rust inhibitors should be approved independently by clients and coating suppliers prior to use to ensure proper coating adherence. As with all rust inhibitors the system should be flushed with clean water before long term storage. Use of rust inhibitors is common practice when blasting with vapor abrasive equipment and ProTXion should be contacted for further product details and performance information. References Frenzel, L.
