3 The Art of Paintless Dent Repair Paintless dent repair is the art of removing unwanted door dings, dents, and creases from steel and aluminum automobile panels using specialized tools of various lengths, widths, angles, and tips. Access points are used or created in order to place the tip of the tool directly behind the dent. Not only does the process require pushing and massaging the dent from behind, it is also necessary to strike the dented area from the front to truly straighten the panel. The time required for an experienced technician to remove a dent varies depending on size, depth, and location. Smaller dents will take less than a minute to remove, while larger, more technical dents will take several hours. While there are numerous companies that make the tools used in the process of removing dents, not all dent guys are created equal. If tools determined the quality of the repair, then price would be the only factor a customer would use to determine from whom to seek services. However, this is anything but the truth. Paintless Dent Repair requires an extremely lengthy training process in order to be proficient in the trade and even more training to be considered good. Once the factory paint on an automobile panel has been cracked, the paint cannot be repaired without repainting. This is why training, skill, and technique are so important. 4 History of Paintless Dent Repair The history of paintless dent removal is something of a mystery because in the past, its processes were kept quite secret. In the 1980 s, dent repairs performed at automobile dealerships were done behind large curtains in order to protect the secrets of the craft. However, stories trace paintless dent repair back to the 1940 s where ding men used spoons and, eventually, hand crafted tools to remove small dents from Mercedes Benz and BMW s that were dinged in the assembly process. This continued for the next few decades until the process lost its appeal as the assembly line process became more efficient and careful. In the late 1970 s and early 1980 s, a small number of those ding men made their way to the United States and began a resurgence of the craft. Dealerships slowly began to realize the cost benefits of employing paintless dent repair craftsmen. The industry quickly grew until today, and virtually every dealership, body shop, and insurance company employs paintless dent repair technicians on a regular basis. While many companies have immerged, both large and small, to offer paintless dent repair services, Carmedic has found a place in the history of the trade through employee ownership and technical skill. History of Carmedic In 1992, Founder and CEO, Dan Binkley, was a consultant for automotive dealerships across the nation. After employing a dent guy to help make the Cadillac s sellable at a dealership he was working with, Dan recognized an opportunity. His vision was to create a company that was customerfocused, professional, an industry leader in training, skill, and quality, and run by empowered owners who would dominate and change the industry. His vision eventually became a reality. Today, Carmedic is the company that is driving and changing this industry nationwide.
5 Carmedic Today With over two decades of experience in the industry, Carmedic has a reputation that consumers trust. Because of continued customer satisfaction, we have steadily grown since our inception in After the first decade of developing and perfecting our business model system of owner partners and training, we realized that most dent companies and their technicians could adequately repair small dents. Carmedic recognized that only being able to remove small dents and hail damage left it competing for customers with the rest of the paintless dent repair companies in each market on the basis of price alone. This drove Carmedic to step outside of that competitive space and into an entirely new market by focusing on learning and teaching each of its owner partners how to remove the larger and more complicated dents typically turned down by other paintless dent repair ( PDR ) technicians and therefore repaired by body shops. Being able to repair these kinds of dents has made the Carmedic technicians an integral and important resource for Used Car, Reconditioning, and Wholesale Managers at dealerships across the United States. As one Carmedic technician explained, we make our money on the small dents, but we earn our keep and a seat at the table by being able to repair the large ones. Today, Carmedic has created this new competitive arena where the art of removing the larger dents and creases are now possible. Since the beginning Carmedic has been a very successful company. Our business has grown every single year. In fact, in 2013 we grossed over 13 million dollars. With the ever-increasing number of cars on the road, the need for quality dent removal is increasing. As over 17 million used cars were sold last year, there is enormous growth potential for Carmedic and all of our partners. Despite a presence in over half of our country s great states and although we perform over 900,000 dent repairs per year, we have just begun to scratch the surface of the PDR industry.
6 The Carmedic Training Process Carmedic training is typically a month process. Training begins with an 8-week stay at our home office in Roxana, IL, where our rookie partners learn the basics of pushing dents and running our business. Once completed, the rookie partners return to their home territories and go through our proprietary Red Book Training program. This is an in-the-field, 4-month training program that helps track the continued growth and progress of the rookie. Following the completion of the Red Book Training program, the rookie will continue to work with his training and lead partner until he has learned the art of removing larger and more technically challenging dents. Towards the end of the first year, all rookies are provided with additional business and larger dent training at our 3-Day Advanced Training seminar. At the end of every year, we gather as a company for our Annual Conference to discuss best business practices, share new techniques, and celebrate the success of the year. Carmedic s Vision of the Future Using best business practices, branding, professionalism, quality customer service, reliability, and the ability to remove unusually large dents, Carmedic has grown since 1992 into a strong force in the industry. 7 Our Customers Customers of Carmedic fall into two separate categories wholesale and retail. Wholesale customers are those who regularly provide us with high volumes of work. Retail customers are those who seek our services on a limited basis. Automobile dealerships have to sell vehicles to stay in business. They acquire vehicles through auctions, trade-ins, and direct purchase from the public. These vehicles are reconditioned and placed on the lot for sale. One step in this process is the removal of the dents. The Carmedic owner partner typically dedicates one day, or a portion of one day a week to each dealership serviced (larger dealerships may require multiple days). Not only do newly acquired vehicles appear regularly, but new dents appear regularly (caused by customers and salesmen) on used and even new vehicles. Many dealerships also have service drives where vehicles are brought for repair. These service drives are another source of work as Carmedic has developed a Service Drive Program that helps train the service writers to price, sell, and schedule dent repairs with confidence. Body shops and collision centers are another great source of business. Carmedic is not in direct competition with body shops and is a resource that they can use to repair minor dents and dings in panels that do not require a conventional repair. Using the services of Carmedic, body shops regularly sell PDR services while they have a vehicle in for major repairs which increase their bottom line. As a company, we have done very little to tap into the retail market place because we have not needed to. Our wholesale dealership work keeps us so busy that we have not had to do any advertising or marketing of our services to stay busy or profitable. One day, as we capture a larger portion of the wholesale market, we will endeavor to conquer the retail market, but for now, we will continue with what has brought us so much success.
8 Our Business Model and Relationships are Partnerships Our business model is based on the development of partnerships, rather than licensing or selling franchises. A franchise model would not provide enough support or training to guarantee success. Although Carmedic partnerships require hard work and dedication, they pay off in the end. How our Partnerships Grow Carmedic borrowed its growth model from Mother Nature. This graphic is a simplified outline of how our partnerships grow. Essentially, an experienced managing partner develops his territory to the point where he needs help to manage the workload. He recruits a new partner and over a month period, that new partner goes through our intense training program until he is able to transition into and take over a large chunk (if not all) of the established accounts. Once that happens, the experienced Carmedic partner is able to go back into the marketplace and open up and develop new accounts. This process of growth places the burden and heavy lifting on the experienced Carmedic partner. Once the new partner has proven his quality of work, skill level, customer service orientation, and fully understands our business, he is given the opportunity to grow as well.
