for EVO/2G DSM crank angle sensor Version 1.4 Thank you for purchasing a triggerdisc! Your package should include a disc and two small shims. These instructions will cover the installation of the disc in the following applications: Lancer Evolution DSM turbo (Eclipse/Talon) using the factory cam and crank sensors NOTE: THIS DISC CANNOT BE USED IF YOUR ENGINE STILL HAS BALANCE SHAFTSS INSTALLED. THE DISC IS FLAT, NOT BEVELED LIKE THE FACTORY DISC, AND AS SUCH DOES NOT PROVIDE THE BALANCE SHAFT BELT WITH ALIGNING SUPPORT LIKE THE FACTORY DISC DOES. Installation of this trigger disc involves removing the timing belt. Refer to a service manual for the timing belt R&R procedure. 1. Rotate the engine to TDC 2. Remove the timing belt. 3. Remove the crank sprocket from the crankshaft. 4. Remove the two 10mm bolts holding the crank angle sensor to the front case. Carefully remove the sensor. 5. Replace the factory trigger disc with the 12 tooth disc. Note the relationship between the TDC mark and the notch for the key in the crank snout when installing. With the snout key notch pointing straight up, the TDC mark should be pointing at 1:30. Maintain this orientation when installing the new disc to avoid accidentally installing it backwards. 6. Since the new disc is flat, not stamped and stepped like the factory disc, the crank angle sensor needs to be shimmed outward slightly to maintain the same clearance to the disc. This is accomplished with the two small shims provided. Place these washers between the sensor and the front case, one washer per bolt hole, and fasten the sensor to the front case with the two 10mm bolts. 7. Install the crank sprocket on the crankshaft.
8. Install the timing belt. For 97+ DSMs and EVOs, follow the additional steps below. For the DSMs, skip to step 14: 9. Remove the three 10mm bolts holding the lid on the fixed cam angle sensor. Remove the lid, taking care not to damage the gasket. 10. This is a hall effect sensor (magnetic). Loosen the bolt in the middle and remove the triggering device. The long and short tabs represent two cam syncs (teeth), one for #1 TDC and one for #4 TDC. The longer of the two tabs needs to be removed. Use a hacksaw, chop saw, or cutoff wheel to accomplish this. 11. Debur and clean the triggering device once the cut has been made. 12. Reassemble the cam angle sensor, align the TDC marks and install it on the engine. 13. For the DSMs, the long cam tooth needs to be cut off from the plate that attaches to the intake cam sprocket. <pic needed>
Next, we will modify the AEM software calibration to recognize the new trigger disc. Please note that some settings differ between the EVO 8 and EVO Launch AEMPro. 2. Open your calibration file and save it as a different name. 3. Open the Advanced Pickups template (Setup Sensors Cam/Crank Sensor <<Advanced Cam/Crank>> Advanced Pickups). 4. Set the following values (remember to hit Enter in each field to make the changes effective): Cam/Crank Setup Fuel Teeth: 24 Spark Teeth: 24 Ign Range: 3.00 Tooth Time min: 500 Crank Alt Fire: uncheck Crank Alt Invert: uncheck Ign+1/4 Tooth: uncheck Eng Cycle = 1 Rev: uncheck Options Sync Setup Sync Early: check MX Sync Test: 24 Sync Teeth: 1 Sync Err R/S: 11 Options Cam/Crank Input Setup Crank Falling Edge: check Crank Rising Edge: uncheck Cam Falling Edge: check Cam Rising Edge: uncheck All others: uncheck Options Ign Phasing Ignition Sync: 0 (this value will change when the Set Ignition function had been performed) Pickup Delay Comp: [you will need to tweak this value based upon the latency of your vehicle s ignition system (see step 12)] Ign Tooth #01: 6.00 Ign Tooth #02: 0.00 Ign Tooth #03: 0.00 (not used 1 ) Ign Tooth #04: 0.00 (not used 1 ) Ign Tooth #05: 0.00 (not used) Ign Tooth #06: Ign Tooth #07: Ign Tooth #08: 0.00 (not used) Ign Tooth #09: 0.00 (not used) Ign Tooth #10: 0.00 (not used) 1 If your vehicle uses Coil-on-Plug (COP), your coil and ignition settings should look like this instead: Ign Tooth #01: 0.00 Ign Tooth #02: Ign Tooth #03: 6.00 Ign Tooth #04: Ign Tooth #05: 0.00 Ign Tooth #06: 0.00 Ign Tooth #07: 0.00 Your coil options will obviously be different as well (Coils 1 through 4 are set to active with knock control, instead of the waste spark configuration where Coils 1-2 and 6-7 are set to active with knock control)

Refer to the Coil Dwell Wizard in AEMPro (Ignition <<Advanced Ignition>> Coil Dwell Setup Coil Dwell Wizard). 3 Individual cars may vary. Start with this setting at 30 and increase/decrease in small increments if hesitation or stuttering is evident.
Below is a screenshot with most of the changed fields highlighted: 5. Open the Tach/Speedo options (Setup <<Advanced Setup>> Tach/Speedo Control Options Tach/Speedo) and set the following value: Tacho: 3 6. Open the Injector Phasing template (Fuel <<Advanced Fuel>> Injector Phasing Injector Phasing) and set the following values: Injector Phase: (2G/EVO 8) or (EVO 9) Inject Tooth #01: 0.00 Inject Tooth #02: Inject Tooth #03: 6.00 Inject Tooth #04: Inject Tooth #05: 0.00 (not used) Inject Tooth #06: 0.00 (not used) Inject Tooth #07: 0.00 (not used) Inject Tooth #08: 0.00 (not used) Inject Tooth #09: 0.00 (not used)
Inject Tooth #10: 0.00 (not used) Below is a screenshot with the changed fields highlighted: 7. Now we need to get the ignition sync value in the ballpark so that the car will start. This step requires two people. Turn the car ignition on (do not start it) and run the Set Ignition tool (Configure ECU Setup Set Ignition ). 8. Disable the fuel injectors from firing by disconnecting the injector resistor pack (located on the firewall). 9. Arm your buddy with a timing light. With the Set Ignition dialog open and the timing fixed to 10, crank the engine and have your buddy tell you whether or not the timing mark on the crank pulley is visible, and if so, whether it is advanced or retarded from 10 BTDC. Adjust the ignition sync accordingly using the coarse/fine advance or retard buttons. Once the timing mark is near 10 BTDC (it doesn t have to be spoton for this step), hit OK to exit the Set Ignition dialog. Notice that the Ignition Sync value under Advanced Pickups has changed. 10. Connect the injector resistor pack and start the car. Allow it to reach normal operating temperature. 11. Repeat the Set Ignition sequence but this time with the car running. Sync the ignition to 10 BTDC. 12. Now would be a good time to correct for timing drift. Two people are needed for this step. With the car running, the Set Ignition dialog open and the timing fixed to 10 at idle, have one person rev the car up and hold at 6000 RPM while the other verifies that the timing mark hasn t strayed from 10. If it has, adjust the Pickup Delay Comp value accordingly (increase the value if the timing at high RPM is retarded compared to what it was at idle, decrease if the opposite).
Please note: Quick engine starts are a function of both tuning and the use of the triggerdisc. Note the parameter Stat Sync d during engine cranking before and after installing the disc. Before installation, the Stat Sync d parameter typically takes a while to read ON while cranking the engine. With the triggerdisc, Stat Sync d will read ON almost instantly after first cranking. This means that the triggerdisc is doing its job, but it does not guarantee the engine will automatically start faster. As the engine cranks, if there is a significant delay between the time Stat Sync d reads ON and when the engine actually starts, more tuning is necessary. Tweak the settings in the Engine Start and Advanced Engine Start templates (adjust fuel and timing compensation) to get the best results out of your triggerdisc.
