MID AMERICA MOTORWORKS URGES YOU TO FOLLOW DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY. SATISFACTION IS GUARANTEED ONLY WHEN USED AS DIRECTED IN THIS BOOKLET AND ON THE PRODUCT LABELS ENCLOSED IN THIS PERFORMANCE CHOICE ALUMINUM WHEEL REFINISHING KIT. NOTE: Some wheels are factory finished using special processes which are impossible to duplicate in the field. If you are in doubt about the type of wheels or finish that they have, please consult with the wheel manufacturer BEFORE proceeding. The liability of the manufacturer and/or distributor shall not exceed the purchase price of this kit. Manufacturer and/or vendor assumes no responsibility, express or implied, for results of misuse or misapplication, or for any injury that might be sustained through ingestion, inhalation or absorption through any body surface. INTRODUCTION This instruction booklet will show you how to refinish any aluminum wheel, which product and/or products must be used, and why. It gives you step-by step procedures for virtually every type and style of aluminum wheel on the market. In addition, you can use this kit to customize your wheel, match or contrast the color of your car, or create uniue wheels unlike those on any other car. If your aluminum wheel finish is damaged, it s not your fault. Acidic road salts and brake dust which is alkaline, as well as road soil, can all damage your wheels if left in contact with the aluminum for an extended period. In addition, there are three different types of wheel cleaner categories on the market containing acids, alkalies or Mag Wheel Cleaner. You might not know without extensive research that products called Mag Wheel Cleaner are not for many Mag type wheels. In fact, we ve found the majority of consumers believe any wheel with a decorative design is a mag type wheel. The industry refers to a Mag type wheel as an uncoated cast or machined aluminum wheel, but aluminum wheels are manufactured with many different finishes. You can not just look at a wheel and tell the exact finish unless you are an expert in the wheel business. We will show you how to determine your wheel type as well as restore the luster to each section of its aluminum surface. We will explain why three different cleaner categories are needed, define each cleaner, and explain its purpose. We will also explain why environmental conditions as well as wrong selection of wheel cleaning products may destroy some wheel finishes. You will also learn why PERFORMANCE CHOICE Non Acid-Non Caustic Wheel Cleaner is recommended for safe and effective wheel cleaning. In the preparation of this booklet, we at Mid America Motorworks, Inc, appreciate the help extended to us by many engineers and authorities in the wheel manufacturing business. All wheel manufacturers are concerned about their products and their care. For this reason, many of their engineers and chemists have spent considerable time consulting with us on the proper use of chemical formulations necessary to safely clean or polish their wheels, the methods of restoring the wheels they manufacture, and the items we ve included in this kit. Use as directed, we believe you will achieve superior results 2900 Nor th Third Street, Ef fingham, IL Worldwide: FAX: w w w.mamotor work s.com generalmail@mamotor work s.com Mid America Motorworks, Inc. THE USE OF EACH ITEM ENCLOSED Refinishing your wheels will reuire some work and careful attention to details, but the results will reward you well. We have attempted to include in this kit all items needed for the most popular types of wheels. However, we have not been able to include items you would normally have around your garage or specialty items needed on only a few types of custom wheels. The items included and their use in the wheel refinishing process are as follows: NOTE: Do not use the products listed below until you read the Step-by-Step instructions contained in this instruction guide and car care brochure. WARNING: SOME OF THE PRODUCTS INCLUDED IN THIS KIT AND LISTED BELOW ARE HAZARDOUS. YOU MUST READ THE CAUTION LABELS ON EACH PRODUCT WHERE APPLICABLE. Always use 1200 grit ultra-fine sandpaper on aluminum surfaces after using this Abrasive Pad Grit Ultra-Fine Sandpaper: Used to remove scratches and smooth aluminum surfaces prior to polishing. WHEEL TYPES AND FINISHES The PERFORMANCE CHOICE Aluminum Wheel Refinishing Kit can be used with all aluminum wheel types and surfaces with only minor variations in the treatments applied. It is important, however, that you understand the differences in the thousands of wheel types and finishes on the market. Listed below are the major aluminum wheel types and finishes currently on the market. CLEAR COAT: A process used to protect over 90% of all custom aluminum wheels, both foreign and domestic. Clear coated wheels or sections of wheels have been sprayed with a hard, clear paint like material. This surface may be damaged by brake dust build-up, road salts, and ultra violet rays from the sun, acid cleaners, caustic cleaners, and improper wheel care. ANODIZED: A process used to put a clear oxide film, sometimes but rarely colored, onto a light alloy aluminum wheel by the process of electrolysis. This surface is sensitive to acids or caustics and may be damaged easily. Although the PERFORMANCE CHOICE Aluminum Wheel Refinishing Kit can be used to refinish these anodized areas, the completed wheel will have a highly polished aluminum or painted surface where the anodizing has been removed. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO REPLACE DURING THIS REFINISHING PRO- CESS. PAINTED: Easily detected, non-metallic, colored finish, sometimes also clear coated, used to protect and decorate wheel surfaces. CAST ALUMINUM: A rough, open pore aluminum surface which is not smoothly machined by the manufacturer. These surfaces may be clear coated or painted. MACHINED ALUMINUM: A smooth aluminum wheel surface which is first cast and then machined by the manufacturer. This wheel normally has cast aluminum sections as a part of its design. These surfaces may be clear coated and sometimes Cast Aluminum Section Machined Aluminum Rim Machined Aluminum Center
Page 3 painted in the cast aluminum sections. Aluminum Rim Painted Center Center Cap
Page 4 HIGHLY POLISHED ALUMINUM: A mirror-like aluminum wheel surface which is first cast, machined, and then polished with the use of jeweler s rouge to give a high reflective appearance. Often this aluminum wheel finish may also be forged aluminum or light alloy. These surfaces may be anodized, clear coated, or both anodized and then clear coated. COMBINATION CAST AND MACHINED ALUMINUM WHEELS: These wheels are made of separate parts including two or three dissimilar surfaces. For example, there may be an aluminum rim surrounding a painted, clear coated, anodized, or any other dissimilar center. In three part wheels, there is also an inner core of steel or aluminum made to fit different lug patterns. TWO AND THREE PART ALUMINUM WHEELS: These wheels are made of separate parts including two or three dissimilar surfaces. For example, there may be an aluminum rim surrounding a painted, clear coated, anodized, or any other dissimilar center. In three part wheels, there is also an inner core of steel or aluminum made to fit different lug patterns. STEP-BY-STEP WHEEL REFINISHING Now that you understand a little more about your wheels, let s start the refinishing process, but please follow directions closely. Read the complete instructions for each step BEFORE beginning that work. It is recommended to completely refinish all four wheels easier than the first. WARNING: Wheels must be removed from vehicle before using this product. Clear Coat Stripper/ Remover can cause damage to painted and finished surfaces. Keep away from body of car or any wheel accessories to avoid damage to paint, chrome, or other finishes. If only one wheel is done, it is very likely that it will not match the other wheels. If you wish to customize your wheels or change their look or color, please refer to the section CHANGING THE LOOK & WHEEL CUSTOMIZING. You should read through this section before beginning your Step-By-Step Wheel Refinishing Process. Most aluminum wheels are all aluminum and can be fully refinished with the products in this kit plus several items you would normally have around your house or garage. However, we have included in the steps below procedures for handling painted sections and other wheel surfaces. For wheels of this type, masking tape should be used to protect surfaces not being restored. In addition, masking tape and paper will make it easier to protect the tire from over-spray of the Clear Coat and Paint Remover used in the restoration process. SPECIAL NOTE: To prevent damage, all emblems, center caps, or other plastic wheel accessories must be removed from the wheel BEFORE stripping. You will also need an electric hand held power drill and plenty of clean shop towels. For wheels with painted and clear coated sections being restored, you will need denatured alcohol, masking tape, and, of course, the appropriate clear coat, primer, or paint color as shown in the WHEEL PAINT GUIDE. For anodized wheels, you will need a medium to coarse emery cloth. Assemble the tools and collect the items you need. Everyone interprets instructions differently, so please test your procedure on the back of the wheel prior to starting. If everything is okay you are now ready to work. Please keep in mind that Mid America Motorworks does not guarantee that this procedure will make your wheels look like new wheels, as it is impossible to duplicate some finishes outside the factory. STEP 1. If your wheel has a decorative center cap, painted section, or other sections which do not reuire restoration, these undamaged surfaces must be removed or fully covered with protective masking tape prior to beginning work. If the center cap is plastic, it should be removed prior to the refinishing process if possible or covered with masking tape if not removed. Damaged plastic or chrome center caps can not be restored with this kit and should be replaced. You might also tape off tires and you should allow over-spray of stripper to remain on the tire surface. For a painted wheel section which is damaged and is to be repainted, covering is not necessary. WARNING: Always use eye protection and gloves when using Clear Coat Remover. Rub in the same direction as the arrows STEP 2. Apply Clear Coat Remover to damaged sections of aluminum or other sections being refinished. Lay wheel flat and work around evenly. Follow directions on the label of the Clear Coat Remover can. This will not only prepare these surfaces for refinishing but will also remove any clear coat from the wheel. When using Clear Coat Remover, take care not to over-spray on tire surfaces not protected. This can be done by holding stiff cardboard or paper between the wheel and the tire while
Page 5 applying Clear Coat Remover. Remove any accidental over-spray from the tire after Clear Coat Remover has been applied; please refer to Special Tips In Wheel Restoration, STEP 1. CAUTION: Do not allow over-spray to come into contact with the vehicle s painted finish. Clear Coat Remover will remove paint or damage painted surfaces. If necessary, mask the painted sections of the vehicle, such as around the wheel wells, with masking tape and paper. CAUTION: Read all cautions and warnings on Clear Coat Remover can prior to starting work. After stripper has been on the wheel for 10 to 15 minutes, hose off well with water. You may find it convenient to use the abrasive pad in this kit to remove any remaining paint to clear coat. However, if you use the abrasive pad in this step, cut the pad in half. A dry unsoiled section of the pad will be needed in future steps. To remove heavy layers of paint, you may find it easiest to use a medium steel wool, a copper wire detail brush, medium to coarse emery cloth or the Detailed Brush enclosed in this kit. Then, reapply Clear Coat Remover-being sure to use eye and skin protection. STEP 3. After the paint and/or clear coat has been removed and stripper has been hosed off, check all sections of the wheel which are covered with masking tape and paper, if applicable, and reapply if necessary repeating Steps 1 and 2. CAUTION: When applying or scrubbing Mag Wheel Cleaner, wear safety glasses to protect the eyes and wear skin protection. Do not allow Mag Wheel Cleaner to come into contact with eyes or skin. STEP 4. Spray Mag Wheel Cleaner on a small section of the aluminum surface being refinished. If the Mag Wheel Cleaner Foams on the aluminum surface and turns the aluminum white, spray Dip brush Mag Wheel Cleaner over all aluminum surfaces being refinished. Always work evenly around wheel. Allow up to five minutes lightly for intothis product to etch the aluminum surface. During this time, scrub all heavily soiled sections with the hand brush enclosed Aluminumin this kit. Following this procedure, hose off both the hand Wheel Polish brush and wheel thoroughly with clean water. NOTE: If the Mag Wheel Cleaner does not foam or turn the test surface white, the surface is anodized and must be treated as explained in Step 5. Remember, this kit will not re-anodize your wheels. Polish all aluminum surfaces STEP 5. This step is necessary only if the aluminum has an anodized surface. of the wheel If after testing with Mag Wheel Cleaner, you still have some uestions as to whether your wheel is anodized, rub a small section with Aluminum Polish using a clean rag. If the rag picks up a dark black residue and the surface polishes to a high luster after a light buffing action, it is not anodized. You may proceed to STEP 6. If the rag does not pick up a dark black residue or the surface does not polish easily, the surface is anodized. To remove the anodizing, rub well with a medium to coarse emery cloth (not included in this kit). Please refer to Diagram at right showing the proper direction for use of the sandpaper. Never rub from the inside to the outside of the wheel or in a circular motion. Instead, rub around the circumference of the wheel in a back and forth motion following the contours of the wheel. A. When removing the anodizing, please note that the surface will begin to change color slightly as you break through the anodize. Keep working in the same back and forth motion around the circumference of the wheel and over the entire aluminum surface until all anodizing has been removed. Never rub in a circular motion except when removing anodizing around decorative rivets. To remove anodizing around these decorative rivets or screws, please refer to Special Tips In Wheel Restoration, STEP 2. B. To test if the anodizing has been removed, repeat the procedure above with Wheel Polish until all surfaces turn the rag black and begin to take on a high luster. C. When all anodizing has been removed, return to Step 5 and spray with Mag Wheel Cleaner as directed. STEP 6. Remove all tape and paper from the wheel and tire and give them a light scrubbing using soap and water. Dry completely.
Page 6 STEP 7. Now that any clear coat or anodizing has been removed, Mag Wheel Cleaner has been applied and hosed off, and masking materials have been removed, you are ready to proceed with what is called the abrasive step-down process. Note: If your aluminum wheel has decorative or functional rivets or screws which hold two and three piece aluminum wheels together, please refer to Special Tips In Wheel Restoration, STEP 2. In the abrasive step-down process, you will be removing both oxidation and minor scratches on the aluminum surface by progressively refinishing the surface from coarse to fine. To start this process, use the abrasive pad included with this kit. This pad will remove all oxidation and most surface scratches. Rub with a firm back and forth motion following the contours around the circumference of the wheel as shown in the illustration in STEP 5. Continue rubbing until a slightly darker aluminum surface appears and the white oxidation has been completely removed. Wipe off any residue as you work. Next, repeat this same process using the 1200 grit ultra fine sandpaper included with this kit. Always work around the circumference of the wheel. Continue sanding until the surface appears smooth and has a uniform, satin finish. STEP 8. Apply # Aluminum Polish using the power driven horsehair brush included with this kit. This brush will fit most 1/4 to 1/2 inch power drills. This application is done by tightly mounting the brush in the drill chuck, dipping the brush lightly into the Aluminum Wheel Polish and polishing all aluminum surfaces. Avoid excessive downward pressure when using the power driven horsehair brush. This may cause the shank to bend. You may find it convenient to apply Aluminum Polish by hand on easy-to-reach sections. From time to time, dip the brush in Aluminum Polish as the polishing progresses to maintain a generous coating for superior polishing action. Proceed section by section making sure to polish around any rivets, in small cavities, or along surface patterns. Don t be concerned by the build-up of black residue as you continue polishing. In fact, this process should be continued until all sections being polished are covered with this black residue. STEP 9. Remove all black residue from the wheel with a clean, terry cloth towel. As you proceed with this removal, rub vigorously bringing the aluminum surfaces to a high, mirror luster. Periodically switch to a clean section of the towel as you polish and buff. Inspect each area of the wheel, repeating STEPS 8 and 9 to improve the results, to increase the shine, or to rework areas you might have missed. For instructions on using the horsehair polishing wheel as a power driven buffer refer to Special Tips In Wheel Restoration, STEP 3. This may make the final buffing even easier and add more luster to the finish. For polishing around valve stems and other hard to reach areas refer to Special Tips In Wheel Restoration, STEP 4. STEP 10. In order to maintain the luster of your wheels and to protect the newly polished aluminum surfaces, we recommend you clean your wheels on a regular weekly basis with Wheel Cleaner and Aluminum Wheel Polish. We do recommend clear coating the unpainted bare sections of your wheel because it slightly reduces the luster after polishing. However, you may want to add this protection to the polished aluminum surfaces. This is done with the appropriate clear coat material shown in the WHEEL PAINT GUIDE. Do not clear coat aluminum sections of the wheel without reading STEPS
Page 7 11 through 19 of the following procedures which apply to your wheel configuration. STEP 11. Now inspect any painted surfaces on your wheel. If you have not already stripped these sections and wish to also restore them, reapply masking around the wheel to cover the tire and painted areas you don t want restored. Then reapply stripper to the painted sections of the wheel, removing any remaining paint. Hose off well after leaving stripper in place 10 to 15 minutes. NOTE: On cast aluminum rough sections of the wheel which are painted, the removal of all the old paint is not necessary. Remove only the loose paint from these sections before re-painting. STEP 12. Use denatured alcohol to completely clean all surfaces of the wheel which are to be painted. Be sure to remove any traces of wax or residue left from the stripper or any loose paint remaining on the wheel. The abrasive pad enclosed in this kit, soaked lightly in denatured alcohol, can be used to remove loose paint. Now dry the entire wheel surface with a clean dry towel. STEP 13. Before painting, mask off sections of the wheel and tire with masking tape and paper. This is easily done on most wheels. NOTE: see Special Tips In Wheel Restoration, Step 1 for two or three part wheels with a completely painted center. Also, see Changing The Look & Wheel Customizing & WHeel Paint Guide for other options on changing the look of your wheels or customizing them to match your car. STEP 14. Use your imagination to achieve a custom result. See Changing The Look & Wheel Customizing & WHeel Paint Guide for suggestions and additional instructions. NOTE: Do not apply heavy coats of paint which may run and result in the necessity of restripping and starting over. Take your time painting; several light coats are always better than one heavy coat. This will give you a professional finish. STEP 16. Red Apply clear coat over the completely dried paint using the appropriate product specified in the WHEEL PAINT GUIDE. Follow directions on the clear coat Goldcan. Do not apply heavy coats. Use several light coats to prevent runs and unsmooth surfaces. Allow to dry as directed. WHEEL PAINT GUIDE The WHEEL PAINT GUIDE below includes specified paint colors and part numbers for various manufacturers who specialize in automobile and wheel coatings. You should use only the paints shown in the WHEEL PAINT GUIDE. When applying paint to any sections, a primer coat must be used. Without a primer coat, the final paint color will not properly adhere to the wheel surface. After completely dry, the primer must be sanded with ultra-fine sandpaper to remove surface imperfection, runs or other flaws prior to the application of the color coat. Primer should not be used on any unpainted aluminum surfaces to be clear coated. NOTE: If you cannot locate the special primers, paint, or clear coats please call Mid America s Sales Department at To customize your wheels with the paints specified below, refer to CHANGING THE LOOK & WHEEL CUSTOMIZING. Follow Paint Manufacturer s Directions Before Applying to Wheel Surface. SPECIAL TIPS IN WHEEL RESTORATION 1. If your wheel is a two or three piece aluminum wheel with a decorative, painted center, there are times in the refinishing process when you are working on only one surface and must protect other adjacent surfaces or sections. You might find this easiest by holding a stiff cardboard or paper between the two sections while applying paint, or other materials to the surface being refinished. Masking tape and paper should be applied to the center prior to the application of Clear Coat & Paint Remover or Mag Wheel Cleaner to the rim. Some two piece wheels have a slight opening between the aluminum rim and the painted center. If so, you can tape stiff cardboard together and slide it between the painted center and the aluminum rim, as shown. If there is no opening between the painted center and aluminum rim, you can use one piece of stiff cardboard and hold it in place with your hand while applying. This photo illustrates the use of stiff cardboard which can be used between the rim and tire or any sections reuiring spray painting, clear coat, or paint stripper. 2. If your wheel has decorative rivets or screws, you may find it convenient to use a polishing tool for preparing surfaces or cleaning immediately adjacent to the screw or rivet head. This will prevent the appearance of an unrestored or discolored ring around the rivet or screw. Please refer to explanations, illustrations, and photo in Step 3. We recommend using a wooden dowel rod with a hole in the end which is slightly larger than the rivet or screw. 3. Place cloth, abrasive pad, or ultra-fine sandpaper over the rivet. Then place your polishing tool over the cloth and allow the rivet to push the cloth, pad, or sandpaper into the hole. Using a downward, twisting motion, manipulate the tool as necessary to polish. You can also use this techniue to remove anodizing with the use of medium to coarse emery cloth (not included in this kit).
