3 NOTES Every care has been taken during the manufacture of these fire pumps to ensure that they leave the factory capable of giving a long period of trouble-free running. Correct lubrication and maintenance is essential if satisfactory performance is to be maintained. IMPORTANT NOTE Do not run the pump for extended periods without water in the pump casing, as the water is used to cool and lubricate the gland-seal components. If it is necessary to run the pump for long periods, connect it to a water supply. Failure to take this precaution may result in severe damage to the gland seal components. GENERAL NOTE The terms Left Hand (LH) and Right Hand (RH) used in this book apply when the pumping unit is being viewed from the pump suction tube end, which is regarded for the purposes of this document as the front of the assembly. 4 SAFETY - RELEVANT DATA Thank you for purchasing a Godiva Pump. Godiva Portable Pumps are designed to give safe and reliable service however, BEFORE operation it is essential that the Operating Instructions are carefully read and understood. A risk-assessment of the pump has been conducted with the following results: MAINTENANCE It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that the equipment is maintained in a safe operational condition, as per regulation 5 in the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations TRAINING It is ESSENTIAL that Godiva pumps are operated ONLY by TRAINED PERSONNEL. ENGINE When using Godiva pumps driven by a petrol-powered engine, the following safety points MUST be observed: - DO NOT OPERATE the unit close to flammable materials or structures. - Keep ALL UNTRAINED people AWAY from the unit during operation. - PETROL MUST be HANDLED WITH CARE. - DO NOT refuel whist smoking or allow sparks or flames into the refuelling area. - DO NOT OVERFILL the fuel tank. After refuelling, ENSURE that the fuel cap is refitted. - Be careful NOT TO SPILL fuel. - DO NOT run the engine in an enclosed area as poisonous gases are given off which can cause injury. - The exhaust system becomes VERY HOT during operation and REMAINS HOT for a time AFTER the engine has been stopped. DO NOT TOUCH the exhaust whilst the engine is HOT. NOISE When the pump is running, suitable EAR PROTECTION should be worn at all times by personnel. GAUGES (if fitted) Do not clean the glass surfaces of the gauges with abrasive or solvent cleaners. These will cloud the glass surface, use a mild detergent and water. 4

5 HEALTH AND SAFETY To avoid injury, the operators should take all necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and others and follow the operating procedures laid down in this book. When handling petrol, batteries, oil or hot machinery: a) Do not smoke. b) Do not expose volatile fluids or battery gases to a naked flame. c) Do not touch hot parts of machinery. d) Avoid prolonged skin contact with fluids, especially if corrosive or carcinogenic. e) Protect the eyes as necessary. f) Do not lift heavy weights without suitable assistance. g) Do not inhale fumes or gases. h) Do not remove protective guards or shields. ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION It is illegal to pour engine oil and other contaminants onto the ground, down sewers or drains, or into water courses. Dispose of these through authorised waste disposal contractors to licensed waste disposal sites, or to the waste reclamation trade. If in doubt, contact the Local Authority for advice on disposal facilities. 5

Using multi-viscosity oils (10W-30, etc..) above 4 C will result in high oil consumption and possible engine damage. Check oil more frequently if using these types of oil. SAE 30 oil used below 4 C will result in hard staring and possible engine bore damage due to inadequate lubrication Lead free, minimum 87 octane. (Leaded may be used if lead free is unavailable) 6

7 OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS 1 Ascertain that there is sufficient fuel in the fuel tank. Refer to Recommended Lubricants and Fuel section in this book for recommended fuels. 2 Check oil level by removing the oil fill/check plug. Unit should be on level ground, other wise false readings can be obtained. Reinsert the oil fill/check level plug but do not tighten down. The level should be up to the full mark on the dipstick, add oil if necessary, pour slowly through the open hole. Refer to Recommended Lubricants and Fuel section in this book to ensure correct grade. Air cleaner Oil fill/check plug 3 Check air cleaner for dirty, loose or damaged parts, if necessary take action as specified in engine manual. Check air intake and cooling areas, clean as necessary. 4 Connect suction hose to suction eye. Do not use undue force in tightening suction hose couplings, such as using a hammer or keys, because over-tightening damages the rubber sealing washers. Immerse the end of the suction hose with the strainer gently into the water and see that it is properly submerged, especially when drawing from still water. Throwing the suction hose with strainer into silty water can cause the strainer to become clogged before pumping is started. IMPORTANT: Never use the unit without a strainer - otherwise silt and stones can enter the pump and block the impeller. 5 Connect delivery hose to the outlet. 6 Open the fuel shut-off valve to the I symbol 7 Place the throttle control in the fast ( hare ) position. For a cold engine place the choke control into the choke position and for a warm engine (normal operating temperature) place in the run position. 7

Repeat if necessary until the engine starts. The knack in easily starting small petrol engines with a rope starter is one which is usually gained with experience. 9 When engine has started move throttle control to required position. With a cold engine gradually return the choke control to the run position after the engine starts and warms up Choke position for cold start Choke position for normal running 10 Close delivery valve (screw down handwheel clock-wise firmly). It is impossible to prime the pump while the delivery valve remains OPEN. 11 Work the priming pump handle until the pump is primed. Usually three complete strokes 8

9 are required for each 2 feet of suction hose. When the pump is primed a solid feeling will be felt on the handle which is actually the difference between pumping air and water. 12 Open (unscrew) the delivery valve SLOWLY. 13 If it is suspected that water is not being pumped, work the priming pump again but without closing the delivery valve. 14 When water is discharging from the delivery valve press the priming pump handle right down into its normal position. 15 To stop the engine move the throttle control to the slow position. 16 Close the fuel shutoff valve, move lever to O symbol. 17 The pump should be run with the discharge valve fully open whenever possible. If the quantity of water being pumped is to be reduced, do this by decreasing engine speed. The throttle control is supplied for this purpose. 18 Make sure that the pump casing drain tap is closed before attempting to prime the pump. IMPORTANT POINTS ON RUNNING 1 Do not run the unit any longer than necessary without priming it, as the seals are liable to damage if dry run for any period. 2 Do not drain the pump body unless a frost is expected. The residual water in the body lubricates the seals whilst the pump is running dry during priming. 3 If the pump has been priming water with sediment, it is possible that the sediment when dry will cause the ball in the priming pump to stick on its seat. If this has happened, the operator will feel a spongy resistance when he starts to work the priming pump handle. To correct: Remove priming pump and clean ball and seating. 4 If the pump has been used on dirty or salt water it is advisable to wash it out thoroughly with clean water before putting it away. 5 Occasionally remove priming pump guide, and smear inside the barrel with water resisting grease, such as Shell Barbatia or similar. PROTECTION AGAINST FROST As a precautionary measure, when frost is anticipated, drain the pump volute casing by opening the drain plug/tap situated at the front of the base of the volute casing. 9

10 MAINTENANCE TO DISMANTLE AND RE-ASSEMBLE PUMP 1. Remove the pump support strip and the 8 nuts and washers securing the body to the adaptor. The pump body can now be removed. To remove the impeller assembly, lock the engine and unscrew counter clockwise. The impeller assembly is screwed (r.h. thread) directly onto the engine crankshaft extension. 2. The carbon sealing rings, to be found in the centre of the pump body, can now be pulled out from the spring loaded thrust plates. The carbon seal 0 ring can now be removed, care must be taken when handling the carbon seals, because they are very brittle and are easily damaged in the hand. 3. When replacing the carbon sealing rings make sure that the slots in the edges line up with the tongues on the thrust plates, and after having ascertained that they are in the correct position push the carbon sealing rings firmly home. Saliva is the best lubricant to use on an 0 ring for assembly. 4. Replace the impeller assembly and pump body, remember to remove all traces of existing gasket and then refit a new one. 5. It is recommended that the bore of the priming barrel has grease rubbed onto its surface whenever the priming pump washer is removed. GAUGES (if fitted) Do not clean the glass surfaces of the gauges with abrasive or solvent cleaners. These will cloud the glass surface, use a mild detergent and water. 10

Water leaks from rear of pump Rear seal on pump broken down Strip pump and replace seal FAULT FINDING ENGINE Before carrying out any maintenance on the engine unit refer to the Briggs and Stratton publication supplied with this manual, which will provide further instructions on maintenance procedures. Maintenance Schedule -follow the hourly or calendar intervals, whichever occur first. More frequent service is required when operating in adverse conditions noted below.
