1 GROUP MODEL Body Sedona (VQ) w/power Tailgate NUMBER DATE 051 REVISED December 2009 This revised bulletin a BLACK BAR to the left of the procedure (as shown here) indicates REVISED instruction provides information relating to a running change made on Sedona (VQ) models with power tailgate package produced prior to 6/20/2009. Some Sedona customers may complain after operating the rear tailgate and then turning OFF the ignition within 30 seconds, the battery may become discharged due internal logic of the IPM holding the internal timer ON and creating a small parasitic current draw. To correct this condition, the IPM should be reprogrammed using the GDS download as described in this bulletin. GDS Diagnostic System UPGRADE EVENT NAME 87. VQ IPM LOGIC UPDATE A Service Action is a repair program without customer notification that is performed during the warranty period. Any dealer requesting to perform this repair outside the warranty period will require DPSM approval. Repair status for a VIN is provided on WebDCS (Service> Warranty Coverage> Warranty Coverage Inquiry> Campaign Information). Not completed Recall / Service Action reports are available on WebDCS (Consumer Affairs> Not Completed Recall> Recall VIN> Select Report), which includes a list of affected vehicles. 2 Page 2 of 7 Revised Procedure SA021: For SA021, unlike previous update procedures, it s NOT recommended to attempt Auto Mode before using Manual Mode. For SA021, use only Manual Mode to perform the update! IMPORTANT: The IPM controls many functions throughout the vehicle. Some function may change as the result of the IPM upgrade. For example the main horns no longer provide the horn answer back confirmation when locking the vehicle; instead only the alarm horn sounds. Basically speaking, new and/or updated functions of later produced IPM s may be applied to earlier vehicles when performing the upgrade. This should not be taken as a concern. A fully charged battery is necessary before upgrade can take place. Do NOT connect a battery charger to the vehicle during ECU upgrade. Make sure the blower motor is OFF during ECU upgrade. All ECU upgrades must be done with the ignition key in the ON position. Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or GDS during the ECU upgrade procedure. Do NOT start the engine during the ECU upgrade. Do NOT turn the ignition key OFF or interrupt the power supply during ECU upgrade. When the ECU upgrade is completed, turn the ignition key OFF and wait 20 seconds before starting the engine. ONLY use approved ECU upgrade software designated for the correct model. Year and engine size. Failure to do so may create other driveability issues due to the use of the incorrect ECM/PCM calibration. The headlamps will turn on during the SA021 update. It is recommended for SA021 that a battery jump box be installed to assure proper battery voltage is maintained during the update process. 3/8

3 Page 3 of 7 1. Connect the power supply to the GDS tool. If attempting to perform the ECU upgrade with the power supply cable disconnected from the GDS tool, be sure to check that the tool is fully charged before upgrade. If the GDS tool is not fully charged, failure to perform the ECU upgrade may occur. Therefore it is strongly recommended that the power supply be connected to the GDS tool. 2. Connect the USB cable between the VCI and GDS tool. When performing the ECU upgrade using the GDS tool, wireless communication between the VCI and GDS tool is not available. Therefore be sure to connect the USB cable between the VCI and the GDS tool. 3. Connect the Main 16-pin DLC cable (GHDM ) to the VCI. 4. Connect the Main 16-pin DLC cable (GHDM ) to the ODB-ll connector, located under the driver s side instrument panel. 4/8

4 Page 4 of 7 5. With the ignition key ON, turn ON the VCI and GDS tool. Access the GDS vehicle identification number (VIN) screen and configure the vehicle using the VIN AUTO DETECT function. 6. Once back at the GDS Main Screen, select ECU upgrade from the bottom right-hand corner. 7. Once the upgrade screen appears, choose Manual Mode, and then choose BCM. Upgrade Event From the drop down menu s, choose: 87.VQ IPM LOGIC UPDATE VQ PTG USA: D /9155-4D110 Then click OK to start update. 5/8

5 Page 5 of 7 8. Enter Manual Upgrade Password The update for SA021 may take several trys to begin the process. It may fail on the first couple of attempts and result in the following message shown below. This usually occurs at around 1% of the download. Once the download passes 2%, it usually completes 100%. Turn the ignition key OFF and then back ON. Try the process again until the download starts and completes. 6/8

6 Page 6 of Once the download completes the following screen appears. Turn OFF the ignition, wait 10 seconds, and then turn the ignition back ON. Click OK to proceed. 11. Once the update has finished, the following notice will appear indicating SA021 has been succesfully completed. 12. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes using the GDS and erase any DTCs stored. 7/8
