Set Up Engine Preparation Engine Oil TE: Engine oil is a major factor affecting the performance and service life of this water pump. Non-detergent and 2-stroke engine oils WILL damage the engine and are not recommended. 1. Use 4 stroke oil, or an equivalent high detergent, premium quality motor oil certified to meet or exceed U.S. automobile manufacturer s requirements for Service Classification SG, SF/CC, CD. This designation will be on the motor oil container. 2. SAE 10W-30 is recommended for general, alltemperature use. See chart for appropriate weights for your area. 3. Locate the oil filler cap and remove. Fuel and refuel in a well ventilated area with the engine stopped. Do not smoke or allow flames or sparks in the area where the engine is being refueled or where gasoline is stored. Do not over fill the tank (there should be no fuel in the filler neck). After refueling, make sure the tank cap is closed properly and securely. Be careful not to spill fuel when fueling or refueling. Spilled fuel or fuel vapor may ignite. If fuel is spilled make sure the area is dry and free of fumes before starting the engine. Avoid fuel contact with the skin or breathing vapors for a prolonged period. KEEP FUEL OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN. 1. Unleaded gasoline with a octane rating of 86 or higher is recommended because it produces fewer engine and spark plug deposits and extends the exhaust system life. 2. Remove tank cap and fill tank. 3. Do not fill tank above the shoulder of the fuel strainer. 4. Fill oil reservoir according to the engine oil capacity found in table Confirm proper fill by replacing the dip stick and checking the oil level. Fueling the Engine WARNING Gasoline is extremely flammable and is explosive under certain conditions. 4. Never use stale or contaminated gasoline or oil/gasoline mixture. KDAR recommends a fuel stabilizer. 5. Avoid getting dirt or water in the fuel tank. KDAR Company 6

Operation Pre-Start Preparation WARNING Improperly maintaining this pump, or failing to correct a problem before operation, could cause a malfunction that may result in serious injury. Always perform a pre-operation inspection before each operation and correct any problem. TE: The following procedures are to be completed each time the water pump is started. General Condition 1. Look around and underneath the pump for signs of oil or gasoline leaks. 2. Check that all nuts, bolts, screws, hose connectors and clamps are tightened. 3. Remove any excessive dirt or debris, especially around the muffler and recoil starter. 4. Look for signs of damage. Suction & Discharge Hoses Pump Placement For best pump performance, place the pump near the water level and use hoses that are no longer then necessary. This will enable the pump to produce the greatest output. As head (pumping height) increases, pump output decreases. Maximum head specifications are show in Table 1 on page 3. The length, type and size of the suction and discharge hoses can also significantly effect the pump output. Discharge head capacity is always greater than suctions head capacity, so it is important for the suction head to be the shorter part of the total head. Minimizing suction head (placing the pump near the water level) is also very important for reducing self-priming time. Self-priming time is the time it takes the pump to bring water the distance of the suction head during initial operation. 1. Check the general condition of any hose that is to be connected to the water pump and be sure they are in serviceable condition. Note: The suction hose must be reinforced construction to prevent collapse. 2. Insure the sealing washer in the suction hose connector is in good condition. 3. Check that hose connectors and clamps are properly and securely installed. 4. Make sure the strainer is in good condition and connected to the suction hose. Engine 1. Check engine oil level and add if the level is low. 2. Check the air filter to insure it is clean and free of obstructions. 3. Check the fuel level to insure tank is full. KDAR Company 7

Operation Suction Hose Installation Note: Use commercially available suction hose that is reinforced with non-collapsible wall or braided wire construction. 1. Slide a hose coupler into the hose clamp ring. 2. Insert sealing washer into the hose clamp ring. 3. Securely thread the hose clamp ring onto intake port. (see diagram below) Discharge Hose Installation Note: Use commercially available discharge hose. 1. Slide a hose coupler into the hose clamp ring. 2. Insert sealing washer into the hose clamp ring. 3. Securely thread the hose clamp ring onto discharge port. (see diagram below) 4. Slide a hose clamp over the hose. 5. Slide hose over the hose coupler. 6. Slide hose clamp over the hose coupler and tighten securely. 4. Slide hose clamp over the hose. 5. Slide hose over the hose coupler. 6. Move hose clamp up over the hose coupler and tighten securely. 7. Slide a hose clamp over the other end of the suction hose. 8. Slide suction hose over the strainer. 9. Move hose clamp up over the strainer connector and tighten the hose clamp. Priming the Pump Note: Operating the pump dry will destroy the pump seal. If the pump has been run dry, stop the engine immediately, allow to cool and prime the pump. 1. Remove the filler cap. 2. Completely fill the pump chamber with water. 3. Reinstall the filler cap and tighten securely. KDAR Company 8

Storage Internal Oiling 1. Remove the spark plug. 2. Pour 1 tablespoon of clean engine oil into the cylinder. 3. Crank the engine several times by pulling on the starter rope. 4. Reinstall the spark plug. 5. Slowly pull the starter rope until resistance is felt. At this point the piston is coming up on its compression stroke and both the intake and exhaust valves are closed. Storing the engine in this position will help protect it from internal corrosion. Replacement Parts The emission control systems on your engine were designed, built, and certified to conform with EPA and California emission regulations. We recommend the use of original replacement parts whenever you have maintenance done. These originaldesign replacement parts are manufactured to the same standards as the original parts, so you can be confident of their performance. The use of replacement parts that are not of the original design and quality many impair the effectiveness of your emission control system. Safety Features Low-Oil Shutdown This water pump is equipped with low-oil shutdown. If the oil level in the engine gets too low the engine will shut down automatically. This prevents damage to the engine resulting from insufficient lubrication. It the engine shuts down and the oil is at the proper level, make sure the water pump is on a level surface. Having the unit at an angle may shift the oil giving the sensor a false reading. Spark Arresting Muffler All Hot Max water pumps are equipped with spark arresting mufflers allowing for use around agricultural crops, forests, brush, grass and other similar items. Spark arresting mufflers are required in the State of California and on some U.S. Forest Service Land and may also be legally required under other statutes and ordinances. The California statues requiring a spark arresting muffler are Sections 13005(b), 4442 and A manufacturer of an aftermarket part assumes the responsibility that the part will not adversely affect emission performance. The manufacturer or rebuilder of the part must certify that use of the part will not result in a failure of the engine to comply with emission regulations. KDAR Company 15

Trouble Shooting Engine Will Not Start Is the fuel valve on? Is the choke closed? Is the engine switch on? Is there fuel in the tank? Is there oil in the engine? Turn fuel valve on. Move choke to closed unless the engine is warm. Turn engine switch on. Refill the tank. Add the recommended oil. Is there a spark from the spark plug? Replace the spark plug. Still no Spark To Check: 1. Remove the spark plug cap and clean any dirt from around the spark plug. 2. Remove the spark plug and install the spark plug in the plug cap. 3. Set the plug side electrode on the cylinder head. 4. Crank engine, sparks should jump across the gap. Take the water pump to an authorized KDAR water pump service center. WARNING Be sure there is no spilled fuel in the area. Gasoline is extremely flammable and is explosive under certain conditions. Is the fuel reaching the carburetor? To Check: 1. Turn off the engine switch and loosen the carburetor drain screw. 2. Fuel should flow from the drain when the fuel valve is turned on. Clean the fuel sediment cup and fuel filter. If the engine still does not start, take the water pump to a authorized KDAR service center. TE: The nearest KDAR authorized service center can be found by visiting KDAR Company 16

Trouble Shooting Engine Lacks Power Is the air filter element clogged? Is the fuel bad? Engine stored without treating the fuel or refueled with bad gasoline Is the fuel filter clogged? If the engine still lacks power take the water pump to a authorized KDAR service center. Clean or replace the air filter. Drain fuel from tank and carburetor and refill tank with fresh fuel. Clean or replace fuel filter. No Pump Output Is the pump primed? Is the suction hose collapsed, cut or punctured? Is the strainer completely under water? Is there an air leak at the connector? Is the strainer clogged? Is there excessive head? If the pump still has no output take the water pump to a authorized KDAR service center. Prime the pump. Replace the suction hose. Put the Strainer and suction hose completely under water. Replace sealing washer if missing or damaged. Tighten the hose connector. Clean the strainer. Relocate the pump and/or hoses to reduce head. KDAR Company 17

Trouble Shooting Low Pump Output Is the suction hose collapsed, damaged, too long or too small a diameter? Is there an air leak at the connector? Is the strainer clogged? Is the discharge hose damaged, too long or too small a diameter? Is the head marginal? If the pump still has no output take the water pump to a authorized KDAR service center. Replace the suction hose. Replace the sealing washer if it is missing or damaged. Tighten the hose connector clamp. Clean debris from the strainer. Replace the discharge hose. Relocate the pump and/or hoses to reduce the head. High Altitude Operation At high altitude, the standard carburetor air-fuel mixture will be too rich. Performance will decrease, and fuel consumption will increase. A very rich mixture will also foul the spark plug and cause hard starting. Operation at an altitude that differs from that at which this engine was certified, for extended periods of time, may increase emissions. High altitude performance can be improved by specific modifications to the carburetor. If you always operate your engine at altitudes above 5,000 feet (1,500 meters), have a qualified mechanic perform this carburetor modification. This engine, when operated at high altitude with the carburetor modifications for high altitude use, will meet each emission standard throughout its useful life. Even with carburetor modification, engine horsepower will decrease about 3.5% for each 1,000- foot (300-meter) increase in altitude. The effect of altitude on horsepower will be greater than this if no carburetor modification is made. TICE: When the carburetor has been modified for high altitude operation, the air-fuel mixture will be too lean for low altitude use. Operation at altitudes below 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) with a modified carburetor may cause the engine to overheat and result in serious engine damage. For use at low altitudes, have a qualified mechanic return the carburetor to original factory specifications. KDAR Company 18
