1 Safety Before attempting to operate or install the PyroBlitz unit, read all of these safety precautions and follow carefully. An ultra-high pressure fire pump system is inherently powerful and potentially hazardous equipment; however, with the proper care and understanding of the instructions, such firefighting units can be operated effectively and safely. A PyroBlitz firefighting unit must only be operated by qualified personnel who have completely read and understand this PyroBlitz Manual. This manual is intended to reinforce and review safety techniques. It is recommended that qualified users complete extensive firefighting exercises prior to placing a unit in service and practice refresher exercises on an annual basis. It is strongly recommended that this entire instruction manual be reviewed in depth before operating or maintaining this equipment. Service work should only be performed by qualified individuals who have read and completely understand the operations manual. 1. Always wear eye protection 2. Always wear full personal protective equipment (PPE) for operator of nozzle 3. Always inspect hoses and couplings prior to use 4. Keep away from exhaust and hot engine components 5. Follow this Instruction Manual regarding winterization, draining, and protection of the hoses, pump, and entire plumbing system when exposed to temperatures below 32 degrees F / 0 degrees C 6. Check fuel, oil, and lubricant levels prior to operation 7. Do not operate equipment unless operator has read this operation and instruction manual. DANGER: Never direct a water stream towards an electrical power line. 9

Serious personal injury can result from an untreated water injection wound. 10

2 A Quick Look at How the System Works The system consists of a portable, high-pressure nozzle and a gasoline-powered, high-pressure pumping unit. The unit is typically supplied with a high-pressure attack hose located on a hose reel. The unit is equipped with many features to maintain operator safety while operating with nozzle pressures in the PSI range. Water mist systems operate on the principle of generating very fine droplets of water and delivering them to the fire zone. Water mist is very effective at fire suppression due to its high specific heat and latent heat of vaporization coupled with the increased surface area, allowing faster heat absorption. The majority of the energy absorbed by water in heating occurs during the phase change from liquid to gas. There are a number of complex interactions that occur between water mist and fires, which can lead to extinguishment. The three primary mechanisms of extinguishment are heat extraction, oxygen depletion and radiation blocking, with secondary mechanisms involving air dilution and kinetic effects such as reduced flame velocity. PyroBlitz benefits from more modern delivery systems, both in terms of pump units as well as nozzles. In addition, we can apply the wetting agents far more efficiently and concentrate not only on the fuel phase of the fire, but also the gaseous phase. This all gives a new meaning to the very old phrase where there is smoke, there is fire! Foam Line Water and Foam Tank Water Source Tank-to-Pump Draft Line B2000 Power Unit Hose Reel Pond, Lake, Pool, etc. PyroBlitz Spray Nozzle How the System Works 1. Water is pumped from a water source (tank, pond, lake, river, pool, etc.) 2. Foam is introduced into the water stream (if desired) 3. Water/water-foam mix travels to spray nozzle via the hose reel 4. High-pressure water/water-foam mix extinguishes flames 11

Operation Instructions Foam Line Water and Foam Tank Water Source Tank-to-Pump Draft Line B2000 Power Unit Hose Reel Pond, Lake, Pool, etc. PyroBlitz Spray Nozzle Drafting Operations The PyroBlitz Ultra High Pressure Fire Suppression unit has been designed for rapid deployment in rural, wildland and municipal environments. It has the capability to draft water from open sources such as ponds, rivers, stream, dams and swimming pools to allow a sustained fire attack with the high pressure hand line as well as the capability to replenish the booster tank while drafting from open water supply. Preparing the Unit Position the unit as close to the open water source as possible, taking into account ground conditions, slopes and current flow direction as well as water condition. Shut down engine. Close tank to pump valve. Remove blank cap from suction inlet port. Position suction hose/strainer to make the connection to the suction inlet port. Ensure that rubber washer in suction hose is present and in good condition. Attach suction hose to suction inlet port and tighten hose until airtight connection is obtained. (A rope can be secured to the suction hose at the strainer and suction connection in order to assist with placement of hose into open water source and/or manipulation of hose during and after operations.) Place the strainer into the open water source with no less than one foot above strainer. Place strainer facing upstream if used in flowing water. Ensure that strainer does not bottom out onto river bed, pond or stream to prevent ingestion of mud and or stones. 26

Operation Instructions Start pump. Open primer valve. Use hand primer to exhaust air from suction hose. Observe water rising in suction hose until it reaches pump suction inlet. The pump is capable of drafting water from a maximum of 20 feet deep (optional only with primer fitted). Once pump is primed and lift is observed, close primer valve. Select either tank fill operation or hose reel attack line and commence pumping operation. NOTE: DO NOT RUN THE PUMP WITHOUT WATER FOR LONGER THAN ONE MINUTE. Failure to Obtain/Maintain Lift Failure to obtain or sustain lift can be attributed to the following conditions: Loose or poor suction inlet connection must be airtight Faulty or damaged suction hose washer Blocked strainer Strainer not adequately submersed Faulty primer valve (if fitted) Faulty primer (if fitted) Faulty pump Water level too far below pump suction inlet Pump suction hose not adequately primed NOTE: SUCTION STRAINER MUST BE SUBMERSED AT LEAST ONE FOOT BELOW WATER LEVEL. Initial pumping operations could be accompanied by a certain amount of air in the discharge line. This condition should stabilize within one minute of pumping operations. If air continues to exit during pumping operations, stop the unit as cavitation can damage the pump; ensure proper seal is obtained. 27

Operation Instructions Rotary Gear Pumps General Description Pump housings and gears are made of top quality bronze, shafts are stainless steel 303. Bearings are made of high performance carbon-graphite material selected for wear resistance and long service life. Gear pumps are positive displacement pumps. Each shaft revolution displaces a definite amount of liquid relatively unaffected by the back pressure in the discharge line. Shaft speed and flow are directly proportional. Drive Arrangement Close coupled pumps are mounted directly to the electric motor by means of a suitable adapter bracket. The pump drive shaft is connected to the motor shaft by a flexible coupling. Liquids and Temperature These pumps are suitable for all liquids that are compatible with bronze. Most common liquids are water, oil, and mild chemicals in the ph-range of 4 to 11. Viscous liquids require reduced shaft speeds of 1150 RPM or lower. Consult factory. Liquids containing solids, abrasives, powders or paint pig- ments are definitely not recommended for gear pumps. If abrasives are unavoidable, use a very low shaft speed. The recommended liquid temperature range is 32 F to 140 F for longest pump life. If more extreme temperature conditions exist, our factory should be consulted. Freezing of water-filled pumps can cause damage and must be avoided. Oils at low temperatures are very viscous requiring a lower speed or extra power. Suction Lift As a general rule, the suction lift should be kept at an absolute minimum by placing the pump as close to the liquid source as possible. A gear pump in new condition can lift 20 feet of water in the suction line. A foot valve (preferably with built-in strainer) is recommended at the beginning of the suction line. For a first start-up, the pump should be primed to avoid dry running. Minimum size of the suction pipe is the size of the pump inlet port. For longer suction lines (over 3 feet), or for viscous liquids, the pipe size should be at least one size or two sizes larger than the pump inlet port. 29 For complete Oberdorfer Pump literature, go to pyrolance.com. Rotation and Relief Valve The relief valve is not intended to be a metering or flow control device. Its main purpose is to function as a discharge pressure relief when the spring tension is exceeded by the discharge pressure. Overheating can occur within 5-10 minutes if the discharge line is completely shut off for extended periods. Unless otherwise specified, the pump motor unit is supplied by the factory for shaft rotation clockwise from shaft end. Reversing the motor rotation will reverse the in and out ports and also requires changing the relief valve location. The relief valve is always on the discharge side in this pump series. The factory pressure setting is 50 PSIG. To increase pressure, turn the relief valve adjusting screw in a clockwise direction. To reverse single phase motors, find instructions on the inside of the junction box cover or on the name plate of the motor. Three phase motors are not wired for any particular rotation. They can be reversed by interchanging any two (2) wires of the three (3) wire leads. Performance Water 70 F PSI GPM HP Req R.P.M. 41 Specifications Throttle Controller Cat Pumps Model 8100 System Saver Throttle Controller Specifications Max. System Pressure 4000 PSI 275 BAR Actuation Pressure 250 PSI 18 BAR Max. Temperature 160 F 71 C Fitting Size 3/8" NPTM 10 mm Cable Length 48" 1219 mm Weight 22 oz kg Dimensions 5.25 x 1.75" 133 x 45 mm Installation The Throttle Controller will function in any position, however, a minimum number of bends should be in the throttle cable to insure smooth consistent operation. If multiple discharge ports are available, install directly into the discharge manifold port. If not, tee into the discharge line between the unloader valve and the pump. Operation When the shut-off gun is closed (trigger released) the unloader will go into by-pass and drop the system pressure to 250 PSI or less. This change in pressure moves the piston in the throttle controller, reducing the tension on the throttle cable to permit the engine to idle. NOTE: The Throttle Controller cannot be used with a pressure regulator as a regulator maintains system pressure and will not give the required low pressure drop to activate the piston in the Controller. Setting and Adjustment Connect the Throttle Controller cable by turning the threaded cable end into the cable retainer. Thread hand tight until Locking Nut and Housing are flush with the cable retainer. Then secure locking nut with wrench. Torque to 100 in/lbs. Slide cable wire through the hole in the L connecting rod. Apply a small amount of Loctite 242 to the I.D. of the socket head screw. Only partially thread onto L connecting rod until remaining connection is made. Slide Z end of cable through the housing clamp. Then insert Z end into cable insert on the engine throttle rack. Only partially tighten screw on housing clamp now to allow later fine tuning of the throttle cable. With the engine in idle position, tighten the socket head screw on the L connecting rod. Torque to 8-10 in/lbs. Start the engine and make the necessary pressure adjustment to your unit to obtain full operating pressure at rated RPM. Check this pressure with the trigger gun open. Leave gun open and adjust the engine to full RPM by sliding the cable housing back and forth to obtain a minimum of 5/1000ths of a gap at the stop on the engine throttle rack. When the engine gap is reached tighten screw on cable housing clamp. Torque to 10 in/lbs. Caution: The engine throttle should not be allowed to hammer against the throttle rack stop. Be certain to leave a small air gap between the throttle and the stop to prevent stress on the cable, the throttle stop and the L connecting rod (see Tech Bulletin 061). Troubleshooting Water leaking around L connecting port: O-ring worn. Replace as needed. Engine does not drop to idle Regulator incorrectly installed or pressure lock-up unloader incorrectly installed. Use only Unloader with low pressure of less than 250 PSI in by-pass. Plugged orifice in throttle controller. Clean as needed. Cable broken or restricted with severe bends. Engine does not return to full system RPM Cable broken or restricted with severe bends. Cable extremely dirty. Lubricate and resume operation. 41
