In 2010, the Novi Fire Department began to replace its transport ambulances with Ford Expedition (SUV's). Three Expeditions have been purchased since transitioning to the SUV platform and are currently in service as certified basic life support/non-transporting vehicles. These vehicle are outfitted to carry two fire fighters, medical and firefighter protective equipment to the scene of fire, emergency medical and special rescues. These vehicles have worked as intended; however, we found that they are limited in the number of personnel and equipment they can carry. Only two firefighters can occupy the vehicle. Upon review of alternatives for our next vehicle replacement, it was determined that a heavyduty/one-ton, four door and four-wheel drive will work best for our operations. In order to carry all the necessary equipment we chose to utilize a standard service body with compartments. The truck is powered by a diesel engine a nd has a heavy-duty platform which will provide all the features necessary for our equipment and will extend the service life of this vehicle. This vehicle will be able to carry the same items the SUV-type rescues carry plus up to three additional firefighters and their gear, extinguishers, and even have room for additional rescue equipment. The compartment configuration will give responders quicker access to equipment on the truck. On delivery, we intend to replace Rescue 3 with the new GMC vehicle. Rescue 3 will then be used as a replacement for the current Lieutenant's vehicle 529. This vehicle was obtained from the Police Department and is a Ford Expedition with 11 4,088 miles and is beyond its service life for emergency operations. Upon removal from emergency service, vehicle 529 will remain in the fire department fleet as a service vehicle to replace a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe vehicle #316. The Tahoe will either be absorbed by other departments within the City or placed on the Michigan Inter-governmental Trade Network (MITN] surplus action.
