vert land reconnaissance vehicle The characteristics of the battlefield of the future make it vital to have effective terrestrial surveillance systems which provide timely information about the terrain and the enemy, allowing Army units to execute their plans and offer an effective challenge. The first prototype of the Land Reconnaissance Vehicle (known by its Spanish acronym, VERT), designed and developed by NAVANTIA and the Logistic Support Command was introduced recently with the Spanish Army Autor FAM Late 2015 it was received the first prototype of the Vehículo de Exploración y Reconocimiento Terrestre (VERT) (Land Reconnaisance and surveillance Vehicle), designed and developed by Navantia at the request of the Army Logistics Support Command (MALE). SERT Program Navantia Sistemas, a Division of Navantia, developed the Land Exploration and Reconnaissance System (SERT), integrated on a Hummer vehicle (inicially) but with the possibility of integration in any other type of vehicle. The SERT was designed as a state of the art and highly efficient system, evolved from the advanced artillery observation system developed for the artillery observation missions in Spain. SERT offered modularity, adaptability and all weather and day/night operation. The objectives of the SERT project were: Development and manufacture of a technological demonstrator for a navigation, detection, identification and target location system using electro-optical and radar-based sensors and self-protection for Intelligence, Armoured, Field Artillery and Marine Infantry vehicles. Development of algorithms for the integration of cutting-edge radar-based and electro-optical sensors with advanced target identification and location functions. 2
Full integration across the vehicle's technical systems (observation sensors) and tactical systems (command and control). Development of an integrated night vision and navigation system for vehicles. Development of a remote control system for smallcalibre weapons. Presentation of the demonstrator's results on national and international forums. The development of SERT allows Navantia to demonstrate its capacity in this field, making it a potential supplier of this type of system both nationally and internationally. The system SERT can carry out surveillance, target detection and identification in day/night and low visibility conditions. Thanks to its integrated positioning sensors, the SERT has the ability to geographically locate targets, with extraordinary precision in an automated process, thus reducing the mission s duration and improving the observer s efficiency. Several countries have already shown their interest in the SERT system and, at the same time, Sistemas FABA contacted local industries for joint collaboration in Above, the VERT 4 4 reconnaissance vehicle prototype for the Spanish Army. On this lines, test in Emirates.. (Navantia) In the other page, the VERT system during the Black Dragon exercises. (MDE)
VERT-Land Reconaissance Vehicle the adaptation of the SERT system on board existing vehicles of several Armed Forces. For the Spanish Army The development of this system responds to the need to provide ET Cavalry reconnaissance units with a very versatile vehicle equipped with the most modern means of locating and identifying potential threats and, if confirmed as enemies, to facilitate accurate data to allied forces to neutralize them. The project was initiated and supervised by the Terrestrial Platforms Technical Section of the Procurement Department of the MALE, working together with NAVANTIA Sistemas. in collaboration with the Cavalry Training and Doctrine Command and the España nº 11 Cavalry Regiment, who was part of the Cavalry Brigade "Castillejos II, which is based in Zaragoza, who have provided their life experience and vision as future users of the system. This prototype of the ET was based on a VAMTAC tactical vehicle of the company UROVESA. NAVANTIA has developed the aforementioned latest generation of advanced observation sensors, in addition to being responsible for the work of integration into the new 4x4 platform and made performance testing, even though it hasn t the same design as the final version. Also tests have been focused on integrating the new command and control system for small units, also known by its English name Battlefield Management System (BMS) in both prototypes, to ensure that communication between them is possible. The vehicle has also a self-protection Mini Samson Remote Controlled Weapon Station (RCWS) system equipped with a m/m machine gun. Above, the VERT prototype is presented in the Spanish Army headquaters. On this lines, the optronic mast of the VERT. In the other page, EO/IR controls inside the vehicle. GTD has provided to Navantia the stabilized pan & tilt sensor package that has been integrated on the VERT prototype. Being responsible for upgrading the functionality of the technology demonstrator to that required by the final configuration to enter in service in 2016 The final VERT is based on the VAMTAC ST5 High Protection variant of the Spanish company UROVESA, to which a specific design has been done to allow the 4
FAM Report assembling and integration of a number of recognition, exploration and communications means, among which its telescopic mast, which incorporates a pan & tilt gyrostabilizer system to avoid vehicle-motion effects, and is topped with a system consisting of a set of television and infrared (EO/IR) cameras, as well as different laser technology equipment. The first prototype of the VERT was introduced to the Chief of the Army Staff, Army General Jaime Domínguez Buj, on 8 April at Spanish Army HQ in Madrid. In action The VERT has been designed to equip cavalry reconnaissance units with a more versatile unit and the most modern means for locating and identifying the enemy. The prototype has already surpassed the latest functioning tests on the demonstrators. It is due to undergo further comprehensive field trials this year with the aim of eventually using it as the basis for a new Battlefield Management System section.
VERT-Land Reconaissance Vehicle If the prototype responds as is hoped in 2016, the idea is to start making the first VERT and, in this way, create the first section equipped with this equipment in the army, the army said. The first operative use of the VERT was during the Black Dragon exercise in Almeria. During the first weeks of May 2016, the VERT was tested by a ISTAR Battalion as part of the NATO VJTF (Very High Readiness Joint Task Force). This ISTAR Battalion is created on the basis of Group Procurement in Terrestrial Systems (GROST) No. 1 Intelligence Regiment based in Valencia. FAM Above, and left, the VERT protoype tested on a VAMTAC tactical vehicle of the Cavalry Regiment nº 11. Below, VERT inside view with the display panels. 6

vamtac st5 The last development from UROVESA VAMTAC is the acronym for Vehículo de Alta Movilidad Táctico, which is Spanish for High Mobility Tactical Vehicle. The VAMTAC is a multi-purpose light utility vehicle initially designed and produced by URO Vehículos Especiales, for the Spanish Army. The last development is the improved ST5 version. Autor FAM VAMTAC was developed in 1996 to meet the requirement of the Spanish Armed Forces. The Spanish Ministry of Defence successfully tested it, and a five-year delivery contract was awarded in UROVESA delivered approximately T3 and T5 models of the vehicle under the contract. In October 2005, the Ministry of Defence placed a new five year contract for VAMTAC. The new vehicles incorporated some changes and the existing two models T3 and T5 were renamed as I3 and S3 respectively. Spanish forces received approximately 900 S3 vehicles under this contract by the end of The base variant features a rectangular shaped cabin with a slightly tilted down roof on the rear side. The forward cabin has a large two-piece windshield. Two doors on either side of the vehicle allow the entry and exit of the crew and troops. Each door has a rectangular bulletproof glass for observation. The modular design allows a number of configurations to suit the missions. VAMTAC is available in a wide range of versions with different body types. The primary variants are pick-up, command/control and chassis-cab. Pick-up and chassis-cab variants are available in three models - two-door, four-door and the four-door variant with smaller rear doors and reduced cab area. The chassis-cab variant can mount different types of shelters or cargo compartments. The command/control vehicle features four-doors, 16
cargo space and communication masts fitted on the corners of the shelter. Other notable variants include an ambulance vehicle, anti-tank vehicle equipped with Spike, TOW or MILAN anti-tank guided missiles and an anti-aircraft vehicle armed with Mistral SAM. The vehicle (S3) has a length of 4.8m, width of 2.1m and height of 1.9m. The curb weight ranges from 3t to 3.5t. VAMTAC carries a maximum payload of 2t and can tow loads between 2t and 3.5t. The VAMTAC is powered by a Steyr turbocharged six-cylinder diesel engine coupled to an Allison S speed automatic gearbox. Producing a maximum power output of 188hp, the engine provides a top speed of 135km/h. The 110l capacity fuel tank allows the vehicle to travel over 600km. The full-time, four-wheel drive vehicle demonstrates better capabilities under the most difficult conditions, with temperatures ranging from -20 to 50. It has better mobility over all types of terrain including snow, ice, mud, sand and rocky fields. The front and rear axles are equipped with differential lock controls. The independent suspension on each wheel provides high ground clearance. The 17
VAMTAC ST5 ST5 is available in several versions: the basic version weighing 5.3 tons with an engine capacity of 188 hp, ST5 HD with 6.6 tons with an engine of 218 hp, 8-ton 2HD with 218 hp, and Finally, 3HD weighing 9.5 tons is available with an optional engine capacity of 272 hp. In all embodiments, there is one and the same 3.2-liter turbo diesel engine, the power output also depends on the set of the turbocharger. Due to increase in weight were reinforced suspension, wheel and the hub. All machines have the same basic transmission Allison, although those options that weigh less than 6.3 tonnes, the transmission has five speeds, and those that have a large mass, added one speed. ST5 3HD BN3 - is an armored version ST5 with greater mass, which retains the payload of 1.5 tons in version 4PC. Option ST5 3HD BN3, which can be considered as a basic version, accommodates 4 soldiers. Ballistic protection is at Level 3, while customers can choose mine protection between Level 2a and 2b, and the level of protection against IEDs remains classified. vehicle can climb a slope of 70% and cross the water with a depth of 750mm and 1,500mm with special preparation. VAMTAC is air transportable by C-130 transport aircraft and can be carried as an external load underneath the CH-47 Chinook helicopter. VAMTAC ST5 The last development of the VAMTAC family is the ST5 MRAP. Based on the VAMTAC S3, the ST5 has a new design (the front part along and the interior has some differences) with more mobility and with a reinforced armour over previous versions: anti IED,s, Ballistic and anti mines. Optionally the VAMTAC for example can be equipped with deep fording capacities of up to 1,5m and a central tire inflation system (CTIS). The engine, transmission and most major components are the same with minimal improvement. Given the increase in on-board power consumption, the company offers a standard Urovesa generator 28 Volt / 180 Amp to 240 amperes as an option. With appropriate clutch ST5 3HD BN3 can overcome the slope of 70% and can go on the side slope of 50%. Fuel tank capacity of 140 liters ensures a power reserve of 600 km, while the maximum speed is 110 km/h. While the standard cars have a wheelbase of 3.55 meters, with options mortar conveyor wheelbase increased to 3.85 meters, besides it offers extra cabin that holds 4 soldiers. Option defusing unexploded ordnance and explosive devices is a four-seater cabin, his back pocket specially designed to carry the robot, two devices EOD, EOD suits, boards, power generator and other equipment. All versions have the same protection and depending on the model, available with 2, 3 or 4 loopholes that allow an individual to use landing weapons for self-defense. Spain selected again the VAMTAC in 2013, under a contract to supply 772 units: 519 are intended for the Spanish Army, 78 of them for emergency transport and equipment, 99 for the Navy and 76 for the Spanish Air Force. 18
FAM Report VAMTAC ST5 is specifically designed to operate in any environment, including desert and is fitted with reinforced armour over previous versions.
