Old Sauk Road Verona, WI To: Town Board From: Jerry Wagner, Lead crewman and David Shaw, Town Administrator Re: Replacement for 1993 Daihatsu Date: July 16, 2014 Park rangers require use of a vehicle for their work. This requires travelling through the Town on both roads AND trails. The Park Rangers have been using a 1993 Daihatsu HiJet Mini Truck. This truck has served the Town well but is getting older and less reliable. In looking for a replacement vehicle we first looked at what tasks the Park Rangers use the vehicle for. Park Ranger Tasks Transporting Park Rangers throughout Town parks and roads Hauling maintenance equipment and tools to and from Town parks, conservancies and trails Hauling large containers of water to irrigate newly planted vegetation in Town parks and conservancies Use spraying equipment to control weeds around Town parks and baseball fields, trails and conservancies Maintaining trails throughout the Town Fertilizing parks and grass trails Equipment requirements (needs): Ability to seat two people comfortably Top speed of at least 25 miles per hour An automatic (contentiously variable hydrostatic) transmission Four wheel drive Cargo lift bed Cargo box sufficient to haul equipment (or ability to modify based on purchased add-on features) Able to haul 1,000 pounds in the cargo bed Agile enough for negotiating town trails Phone: Fax Web: info@town.middleton.wi.us

2 Equipment preferences (wants): Ability to seat four people Top speed of 45 miles per hour 1,800, pounds in the cargo bed (200 gallons of water plus operator) Diesel Engine We could not find an ideal vehicle. Most utility vehicles such as these are intended more for recreational activities with lesser payloads and durability or are intended for golf course use with lower speed. Another option would be a small pickup but this was dismissed as they are too large to use on trails Vehicles examined: Kubota RTV x 1120 Kubota RTV x1100 Polaris New Brutus (Diesel HST) Toro Workman HDS-D-4WD Cushman Turf Truckster John Deere Pro-Gator 2020 A The specifics of the items above are listed on an attached sheet. Budget Impacts: This item was included in the budget for There is $20,000 allocated for this purchase from the Roads fund in the Capitol Budget. This allows for the purchase of this unit with attachments as required (see pricing) plus a custom box to be manufactured by Hellenbrand Welding for an approximate price of $2,000. Summary: Only the Kubota, Polaris and Toro units were driven. Of those three vehicles, only the Kubota RTV X1120 actually fit the bill for Park Ranger usage based on the specifications above. (The John Deere and Cushman were disqualified based on being two wheel-drive.) Additional notes: The doors on the Kubota can easily be removed during the summer to make it cooler for the Park Rangers using this vehicle.
