6 PRESIDENTIAL THOUGHTS Jim Thorburn President OUR VOLUNTEERS ARE ALREADY HARD AT WORK! It s amazing that we are already into March. February went by in a flash. As far as member events were concerned, February was a relatively slow month for RMR. The big February event was the membership social at 3zero3 Motorsports. 3zero3 always puts on a great social event. Scott Simpson and Garry Wesselink, the owners of the shop, thought it might be cool to have a Porsche Q&A session while consuming beer and pizza. It worked! Of course, there was the monthly Breakfast Club breakfast at the Prefect Landing Restaurant where members have great food and happily converse about Porsches and whatever comes to mind. However, February was an extremely busy month for the RMR volunteers. In order to put on the events in the Spring, Summer and Fall, there is extensive planning and preparation. Here s an overview of the work that went on in February. The Chief Driving Instructor Committee met and planned out their work for the HPDE and Autocross events. Led by Dan Carlson, the committee diligently worked on implementing the new minimum standards which were created by PCA National no easy task. Lead CDI s were appointed for all the events. It s amazing how much work and dedication our CDI s give to RMR. Mark Taylor, our 2018 RMR Enthusiast of the Year, is busy again planning another multi-day tour Glenwood Springs scheduled in August. He spent the month of February planning accommodations, food, tour routes. Yes, six months before the event all this work is taking place. The February Board meeting was extremely busy. Mark Stolberg of AMR came before the Board to discuss and approve the joint AMR-RMR Instructor Training Program scheduled for Pueblo Motorsports Park in April. This joint effort led by Mark Stolberg and Dan Carlson, is a full day of driving instructor training so our member can have top flight instructors in our driving program. Again, an extensive amount of work. The Board was very impressed and approved the budget and program. Holly Jackson presented plans and budget for our New Member Social on March 23rd which were approved. Holly and her team started the preparation of this social back during the 2018 holidays. The New Member Social is a great event for members, both old and new, to learn about the various aspects of the club and how to become more involved. The Board and chairs of the various sections of the club will all be there to discuss and answer any questions about all the great things RMR has to offer. I also hear that our Zone 9 Rep, Rich Sanders, plans to be there also. This will be a great time to meet Rich and learn more about Zone 9 of PCA. Doug Bartlett, our club race chair, presented his plans and budget for the 2019 RMR Club Race coming September Doug and his team have been at work on the club race for months now. As usual, Doug is planning a well-organized and exciting club race. The plans and budget were approved by the Board and Doug is off to the races. I travelled to Seattle to attend the PCA National Board of Directors meeting. As President, I am a member of the PCA Board of Directors. It was an interesting weekend meeting. What I came away with is that RMR is among the most respected and visible regions in PCA. We have one of the most welldeveloped program schedules and run our programs with the utmost safety. It is great to know that we have developed a region that is well respected nationally. Looking forward to seeing you at the new member social! 8 MEMBERS CORRAL Holly Jackson Membership Chair Every March, for many years now, our club holds a New Member Orientation along with our March social. This is a great venue to learn all about the Rocky Mountain Region and PCA. We will have members want to representing different facets of our club and can answer all your questions! This is a must for do if you want to get the most out of your membership. Come out and meet some of our volunteers that organize events, have some food and drinks, and just come out to have fun! Just in case you haven t seen the information: New Member Orientation/March Social will be at Denver Auto Shield on March 23, 2019 from 10am to 2pm. NEW MEMBERS THIS IS YOUR MONTH! This is a big event that takes lots of planning. You should expect to see around 250+ people. I will also be able to have people sign up on the spot! Make sure to stop by the membership booth! I also want to thank Scott Simpson and team at 3zero3 Motorsports for hosting our February social. We had a good turnout and some very interesting discussion. There were many happy winners of not only fully loaded detailing and washing buckets from Adam s Polishes, but 3zero3 Motorsports also gave away a nice jacket with their logo and to top it off, they also gave away a entry ticket to their Automobili Exotica. This was a $375 value! You can t beat that! Like most of our events. You must be present to win! Hope everyone has a happy and safe St. Patrick s Day! Here s to green drinks, rainbows, and pots of gold! Hopefully you have the luck of the Irish (even just for the day!)! Cheers! 14 TRACK TALK Dan Carlson Leader, Chief Driving Instructor Committee How to DE on a Budget and Avoid the Slippery Slope By Chris Sulley, Chief Driving Instructor (CDI), CDI Committee Member How to DE on a budget while avoiding the slippery slope and have just as much fun! since you haven t modified your car to improve lap times. How about that to feed your ego? Recently, I was having a couple of drinks and dinner with our lead Chief Driving Instructor Dan Carlson and fellow CDI Cecil Morris at the Cherry Creek Grill. Not that the location matters, but I know some of you pay a great amount of attention to the details. As most of you may know, Dan, Cecil and I started our high performance driving experiences within our Drivers Education program at RMR. I remember chasing Cecil in the early days with my stock 911, as he drove his off the showroom floor Boxster. Cecil was always faster, but I could hang with him pretty well. Year after year Cecil continued to increase the gap and I kept thinking ok, he keeps getting better and better and I must be falling off the pace. Now, one thing we do really well at RMR is post event bench racing at beer thirty and of course a beer or two in and the truth begins to reveal itself. Cecil had been installing performance parts (those of us driving cars as they were masterfully designed by well-educated German engineers call these cheater parts) on the little Boxster. By the way, Cecil refers to these performance improvements as Spec Boxster upgrades. I begin with this little story because it demonstrates two points: One, cheater parts, I mean performance parts, work if the driver is just plain talented and two, there are alternative paths to participating in Drivers Education events. So, here we are back at the title of this article, How to DE on a budget while avoiding the slippery slope and have just as much fun. First, the definition of the slippery slope: The compelling desire to buy performance parts to lower lap times. How do you DE on a budget and avoid the slippery slope? Well, here is the number one secret which I am sure will solicit letters to the editor. NEVER HAVE A TIMED LAP! What, you ask, I m driving a car, on a race track, with other drivers and I m not supposed to time myself? Exactly! If this just doesn t feel right to you then here is secret number two. If you absolutely must time yourself then never compare your time with another driver. Instead, strive for consistent times lap after lap. That s right, consistent times lap after lap are the sign of an advanced driver and if you happen to be picking up a half second here or there perhaps you are improving as a driver. And, it is easy to attribute the improvement to YOU, 14 HighGear Celebrating 61 Years I realize as part of the Porsche community you are presented with temptation to break rule one as well as backup up rule two. Many of you have attended our membership meetings and perhaps the DE/AX 101 sessions. We hold these at cool places like race shops surrounded by awesome race cars which might as well be painted gold with dollars sign numbers on the side. We also talk with fellow members that participate in our DE and AX programs and often those drivers will begin to tell you about the suspension upgrades and performance parts they installed over the winter hoping to lower their lap times by a second or two. My favorite discussion of course are the expensive sticky set of track tires that might make it through a weekend or two. So, how do you DE on a budget and avoid the slippery slope while being tempted at every turn (no pun intented)? One, realize that the best investment you can make to improve your lap times is YOU. Instead of buying parts spend your weekend budget on entry fees and take advantage of our instructor core. DE instruction is the best bargain you will ever find in motorsports. At the end of the day DE is about improving your driving skills. Two, save your money for the few things that will wear out Tires (performance summer tires are just fine and last longer), brake pads (stock pads work perfectly for a DE you may have to change them once or twice a season, but stock pads are less expensive than race pads, work on the street and don t wear out your expensive rotors), and make sure to get annual brake fluid and oil changes. That is it and all you need to DE and have fun. Here is what I tell everybody that will listen. I can have just as much fun hanging onto my 30 plus year old 911 in the turns, as the next driver without spending money on cheater parts. Now, I said my 911 was bone stock and I may have exaggerated a little. After all, I do have a Momo wheel, an aftermarket wood grain dash and a 200 watt Alpine amp under the passenger seat. The stereo boost comes in handy drowning out the jet noise as I point by the turbo boost drivers and concentrate on consistency lap after lap after lap. And, for the upcoming season, I just spent twenty plus hours and consumed numerous beers polishing my Fuch wheels to a mirror finish. I feel faster already! See you in the turns this season! That is where all the fun is no matter your lap times. And, I look forward to those letters to the editor. HG

15 SAFETY AND PCA RULES UPDATE Safety and PCA Rules Update 2019 Driving Season By: Scott Henderson, Safety Committee Chair, CDI Committee Member, with Vicki CJ Cox-Jones, RMR Board 2nd Vice President, and Dan Carlson, CDI Committee Chair Hi folks! Are you excited for the upcoming 2019 driving season? Whether it be Autocross (AX) or High Performance Driver Education events, the season is right around the corner, so an update on changes and reminders for us all seems in order. 1. First on the list is a reminder. It seems that some members of the public have complained to the Colorado State Patrol that they have been disturbed on I-70 by sports cars that are speeding, racing each other and other reckless driving incidents. It also seems that a CSP Trooper discussed this issue with personnel at Front Range Airport (FRA), our frequent location for RMR autocross events, which in turn was reported by FRA to the BMW Club s leadership who then passed this information on to RMR. Our friends at BMW go on to report that the CSP thinks these incidents may be related to folks coming and going to FRA autocross events and has advised FRA that, if the problem persists, FRA may want to consider revoking access to the airport autocross area for all the Clubs that use it. BMW Club tells us this is the first that either BMW Club, SCCA or the airport have been made aware of this (same for RMR). No other information was provided to identify dates or times that might help with any potential correlation with any particular event. However, you may recall that, when High Plains Raceway was first opened in 2009, we saw quite a number of patrol vehicles watching carefully on I-70 and State Highway 36 when our RMR events were scheduled. It seemed they knew of, and watched, Club schedules and a few of our participants had unfortunate conversations (and more) over the years. Law enforcement has clearly continued the practice as one in particular learned all too well last October. The Trooper who discussed the matter with FRA asked for the word to be passed to all Clubs that we must save the racing for the event! One of the wonderful side-effects of RMR s closed-course events at Autocross and at Driver Education events is that, after one is over, it is so relaxing and enjoyable to just use cruise control on the way home and bask in the glory of the event we ve just enjoyed! We should do the same both going to and returning from all of our events because there s just no better place than the event itself to explore what these wonderful cars can do. Heads up, so we can continue to enjoy them for years to come! Nuff said. 2. Next on the list is a PCA Rules update. Beginning this year, there are new requirements that will affect many of us for Autocross and our Driving Education (DEs). For the exact language, see the Harness Systems portion of the PCA DE Minimum Standards on the National PCA website. Helmets must be checked for currency (not that kind) and car inspections must occur for all Autocross and DE events, but with some important changes. Reminder: For the 2019 season, all helmets must be Snell-rated 2010 or 2015 SA (Special Application) or M (Motorcycle), or currently approved for PCA Club Racing. New PCA Rule: If you have added a racing-type seat in order to use 5-point, 6-point or 7-point harnesses (which must be replaced every two years or every five years depending on whether they are SFI-certified or FIA-certified belts, respectively), you must also have and use an approved Head and Neck Restraint device. Further, if there is to be a passenger (e.g., instructor), same must be provided and used by the right-seater. While this means additional expense for many of us, Dan Carlson has been in touch with Grant Lipsky at Wine Country Motorsports for a special pricing discount so keep that in mind. Keep in mind that PCA DE Minimum Standards also advise for those of us who have added racing seats and harnesses, Therefore, in order to have a COMPLETE SYSTEM, a properly padded roll bar or roll cage is recommended, and an approved head and neck restraint device is required. The take-away here is that (if there is to be a passenger) PCA now requires we have the same type of seats for driver and passenger, and same type of harness/restraints for both driver and passenger, and if 5-, 6- or 7-point harnesses are used by the driver, the same must be provided for and used by the passenger, with both occupants using an approved head and neck restraint device. It is further recommended that roll bars and roll cages be padded, and they must meet PCA Racing installation standards. By the way, a Schroth 4-point harness remains approved for Porsche 918 Spyder, 2015 GT3 and GT3 RS, 2016 GT4, and 2016 Boxster. There is also an approved Schroth 4-point harness for use in the BMW E46 M3. For Porsche cabriolet/spyder cars that want to run with top-down at DEs, arm restraints are required for the driver, and passenger too. The equal seats/equal restraints/h&n device rule applies here, too. (continued on next page) Celebrating 61 Years HighGear 15

16 PAST EVENT : JAN MEMBERSHIP SOCIAL (continued from previous page) 3. PCA Rules update. For those of us who trailer our cars to Autocross or HPDE events and do not drive them on the street in between, we have another PCA rule change. Previously, a single Tech Inspection for these cars could be copied and used at subsequent events during the season, so long as the proper box was checked (that the car passed inspection, is trailered and not street-driven between events). In 2019, the new PCA Rules require all cars must be inspected within 30 days prior to the event. An additional local RMR and AMR wrinkle applies to cars with center-lock wheels/hubs neither RMR nor AMR have the long-handled torque wrenches needed to do a Tech Inspection at the track, so owners of these cars will need to plan ahead and bring such a torque wrench or, better yet, make sure to get your Tech Inspection done before the event and bring he completed Tech Inspection Form to Registration in order to get your event materials from the Registrar. you and your car ready for the 2019 track driving season. Excellent pointers in that article! 5. AX/DE 101 course sign-up! And for those of you who haven t taken the plunge into track driving yet, the Autocross/DE 101 course is coming up on March 30, 2019 at 3R Racing from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Be sure to sign up for it on MotorsportReg.com soon! Attendance is limited to 60 and, as of February 16, 2019 there were already 47 people signed up. Everything you need to know about the life-changing experience of track driving will be covered thanks to Brian Leary s fine work in conceiving and orchestrating this program! From all of us on the Safety Committee, on the Chief Driving Instructor Committee and on the RMR Board, we re looking forward to a fabulous 2019 driving season. We hope to see you out there and please let us know how we can make your experience even better! HG 4. 28 I GET AROUND Danielle Badler RMR/PCA Columnist I think it was Gore Vidal who said Los Angeles is the best place in the world to see the future. To which I would add that, nowhere else is the adage you are what you drive more true. I visit as frequently as I can. My older daughter and my son-in-law live there, with their three children. Hugo, now four and a half, Bennett, a terrible two, and now Olive, two months old at this writing. Ali, their mother, is now a pediatrician, just a few years out of residency. That s right, she s living all kids all the time. My son-in-law, Simon, just made partner at a leading talent agency. They live in West Hollywood, just a short walk up to Sunset, but a leafy residential area featuring 100-year old homes that were supposedly built to house workers in the fledgling film industry. God bless them. Every time I visit, I bring the boys toy cars. Cars that have been stockpiled over the years. Porsches, Ferraris, Lamborghinis you name it all given to me for my birthday. Again and again, year after year, people would ask me what I want for my birthday. And I would respond, a new Porsche, a new Ferrari and get a Tonka Toy replica. Or a Matchbox. Yeah, I know, it s very funny. I m very proud. Hugo can name just about every one of his cool cars, as well as most of the cool cars on the road, simply by their logo. Now, I admit, this being LA, he gets a lot of practice identifying cool cars. But still! Then he lines up his cars and races them around his playroom, against his brother. As a gift, a few years ago, I got them a family membership to the Petersen Museum. They love it. My most recent visit was last month to see baby Olive, of course. But something got to me, even before we got into the house. As we pulled into the driveway, what was sitting, parked? A BMW I-3. I didn t know. I asked Simon what drove him to go all electric. His previous ride was a 28 HighGear Celebrating 61 Years BEHOLD THE FUTURE BMW X-5. Before that was a Prius. And before that an Audi S4. He said the I-3 works for his five-mile commute. Well, ok, so I dove in deeper. How does he charge it? Did he put in a 220 volt line from the house? No, he said, he just ran a 110 extension cord. Hmm, I said, doesn t it take all night to charge? Yes, but he said he gets enough charge overnight to commute back and forth from work. And, over the weekend, it charges fully. But my lease is only for two years, Simon said. So we ll see how it goes. Because Ali drives the big Volvo SUV. With third row seating and a row of child seats in the second row. We didn t need two big SUVs, Simon told me. I ve posed this question before, but it bears repeating against this background; will my grandchildren ever actually drive themselves? Think about it. Hugo will be able to get his driver s license in 14 years, give or take. He loves cars now. But will he ever actually drive? And will he care? And, further, just what will personal transportation be like, especially in LaLaLand, when he comes of age? I recently came across an article on what McLaren thinks the F1 car of 2050 will be like. Okay, that s 30 years from now, not 14. But still. McLaren predicts a 300- mph electric racer with shape-shifting aerodynamic components complemented by onboard artificial intelligence. The sidepods will expand and contract like the gills of a shark built around the energy storage solution of choice, likely something unknown today the tires could feature inductive charging coils and the ability to repair themselves AI will become part of the car the system could learn and predict the driver s state of mind, to provide real-time race strategy tracks with steeper banking, brought closer to fans in city centers. Pie in the sky? Well, take a look at Boeing s Passenger Air Vehicle (PAV.) A recent article in Autoweek chronicled its first flight. Don t call it a flying car. They said it s a combination of a scaled-up drone and a pusher plane, with multiple horizontal propellers providing vertical flight while forward flight is accomplished by a single large propeller in the back of the craft. According to the article, Boeing actually tested the PAV in autonomous mode, without a pilot, as the electric prototype is designed for fully autonomous flight and has a range of up to 50 miles. Hopefully there is an EV charger at your landing spot. Or a 110 line, right Simon? What s the actual business plan? Boeing sees a rooftop urban air taxi market still mostly on the drawing board. Closer in, I just read the specs on Porsche s new Taycan. Autoweek reports that the car, due to go on sale next year, after a first production showing at Frankfurt this fall, will pack over 600 hp and a range of 310 miles. Fast-charging capability will allow the Taycan to get enough juice in 15 minutes to cover 248 mi, or 400 kilometers. Not with a 110 line, I would guess. According to Autoweek, Porsche has made the decision to double the annual production of the Taycan from 20,000 units to 40,000 units. At a base price of around $90,000. For comparison, Porsche sold almost 36, s, in all its versions, in What does it all mean? I m thinking about investigating the cost for a residential 220 line installation in West Hollywood. For a Taycan that I hope to see one day, resplendent in my son-inlaw s driveway. In the meantime, I ve still got a good stockpile of model cars to give to my grandsons. Beyond that, I guess I ll just have to enjoy the pleasure of living long enough to see what happens, as my grandchildren grow up. Because I haven t a clue. HG

29 As your zone rep, I m committed to making myself as visible as my budget from PCA will allow. Each year, I try to plan travel as far in advance as possible. Depending on the size of your region, I attempt to visit at least once and in some cases twice. I also try to mix up the type of event that I join, so that over my 4-year tenure, I can meet as many of you as possible. While the main role of this volunteer job is to support and observe the efforts of region presidents and, as needed, their Boards of Directors, an important part of the assignment is to remain visible and available to all members. Realizing that attendance at one or two events in each region accomplishes SOME visibility, I m not going to be fooled into thinking that this is a comprehensive approach. So, in order to be as transparent as possible, I m including my plans for 2019 as I know them today. This calendar probably represents about 90% of my PCA travel and is based on what can be gleaned from the plans of each region as of this date. Not all regions are shown here, as not all regional calendars are firm at this time. I should also note that I ll be at several more events in my home Intermountain Region than those that are shown here. Roadrunner Region - March 9. And if we don t find an opportunity to meet face-to-face, I m always out here wanting to learn everything that I can about your region! I d love to hear about the things that you love about being a member in your region. Feel free to contact me at any time at this address - Zone9Rep@pca.org. Just a reminder - As I write this, registration for Porsche Parade in Boca Raton is now open. I know that Parade is far away this year, but I hope to see some of you there!!! 33 WHAT WE DO Whether your tastes are social, technical, or competitive, RMR has something for you! You can have fun in your Porsche by participating in driver education and time trials at area tracks, autocrosses, rallies, tours, tech sessions, car shows and more. DRIVING EVENTS TOUR A tour is a non-competitive driving event in which participants follow a given route to a destination (which may or may not be known in advance). A tour may vary in length from a day trip to a long weekend with an overnight stay or two. Tours usually follow scenic routes (which are plentiful in Colorado) and/or visit interesting or obscure destinations. Tours are sometimes combined with rallies to add variety and a dose of competition to the event. RMR hosts several tours each year; AMR typically offers several as well. A number of tours are usually offered at Porsche Parade. RALLY A rally is a competitive event in which contestants attempt to follow a course specified by a set of instructions. Rallies are typically run on public, paved roads, and speed limits are always observed. The two major types of rallies are the Time-Speed-Distance (TSD) rally and the Gimmick rally. In a TSD rally, participants attempt to follow the instructions precisely, maintaining the correct speed, as points are deducted for arriving at checkpoints (the locations of which are not known in advance) early or late. A Gimmick rally is typically a bit less rigid and usually involves solving puzzles of some type. Between RMR and AMR, a handful of rallies at least one of each type are offered. Porsche Parade also hosts a TSD rally, and sometimes a Gimmick rally, each year. AUTOCROSS (AX) An autocross is a competition in which drivers navigate their cars through a course defined by orange cones, usually in a large parking lot. Top speeds are generally moderate, topping out around MPH (no higher than second gear for many cars). Competing cars are spaced at long intervals typically only two or three cars are on the course at the same time. Autocross is a safe way to experience high-performance driving while learning to drive your car at its limit. Additionally, autocross is a major event at Porsche Parade DRIVER EDUCATION (DE) A driver education event provides a safe, controlled environment for highperformance driving instruction. DE offers drivers of all skill levels the opportunity to hone their driving skills, with the help of an experienced instructor, in a controlled, closed-course environment. In keeping with PCA philosophy, the primary emphasis at all times is on safety. A word of warning, though: the DE experience may be habit-forming! As DE events are not racing, nor preparation for racing, lap times are not recorded. However, some DE events are followed immediately by a time trial event, which gives drivers a chance to quantify their performance. Lap times may then be used to measure personal improvement or for bragging rights amongst your peers, etc. RMR hosts six DE s each year at High Plains Raceway, with AMR hosting several more at the La Junta, Pueblo and (possibly in the future) Pike s Peak International Raceway tracks. CLUB RACE A club race is a wheel-to-wheel racing event. A race weekend consists of a number of practice sessions and heats (race sessions), often involving both sprint and endurance races. Since a Club Racing license (issued by PCA National) is required for competition, club racers are serious and experienced drivers. The cars they bring with them to the track can be quite impressive! As a point of interest, the PCA Club Racing program was inaugurated with the RMRhosted First Ever Anywhere club race at Second Creek in Because of the logistics involved in an event of this magnitude, a club race requires a legion of volunteers. However, it is also one of most exciting events to participate in, so be sure to sign up! RMR hosts one club race each autumn at High Plains Raceway which, when combined with a Driver Education event, adds up to one thrilling weekend! NON-DRIVING EVENTS MEMBERSHIP SOCIAL Membership socials provide an opportunity to reconnect with old friends and meet new members. Historically, a membership meeting begins with a social hour with a cash bar, followed by the evening s program. The content of the program varies, sometimes featuring a slide show from a recent event, or a guest speaker such as accomplished Speed World Challenge racer Randy Pobst. Membership socials, unless otherwise stated, are held the first Thursday of the month. Different venues and topics will keep the meetings fresh and inviting. Watch HighGear and the RMR Web site for details. If you have any ideas for a program, talk to the Committee Chair or a Board member! TECH SESSION A tech session is just what it sounds like a session in which a technical topic is discussed. Not just for gearheads, a tech session may demonstrate practical, do-it-yourself procedures such as brake bleeding. Tech sessions are usually presented by experienced Porsche technicians, many of whom are sponsors of RMR events and High Gear. RMR hosts a few tech sessions each year, typically in the off months when few driving events take place. In addition, numerous tech sessions are offered at Porsche Parade. Concours d Elegance A concours is essentially a car show, in which contestants endeavor to present their cars in as close to perfect condition as possible. A number of judged categories usually exist, typically differentiating between types of cars (e.g. 356, Boxster) and level of preparation ( daily driver or full preparation or somewhere in between). Cars sometimes may be entered as display only, for owners who wish to participate but not compete. RMR participates in a handful of local concours events each year, including the annual Exotic Sports Car Show and Concours d Elegance, benefiting United Cerebral Palsy Colorado. The annual Porsche Parade also hosts a major concours each year Celebrating 61 Years HighGear 33
