1 Saturday 16 July 2016 Hill Climb Championship Rounds 5 & 6 Shelsley Walsh It was good to see Chas Reynolds (Kieft), Jan Nycz, the Lawrences and Stuart Barnes out for their first Championship events of the year. Double driving were Fin and son Max Mackintosh using the doctor s trusty Cooper Mk.6, while it was a first time visit to the Worcester hill by Nick Reynolds. Alistair Dent s first practice saw the engine fail by the esses, resulting in a rapid engine change to the motor fortuitously removed from the Hornet before leaving home. Jan, in the sole Norton engined car present, had no time recorded due to a timing error, Nick Reynolds had the throttle stick open on his first approach to Bottom S and Richard Grant thought his engine was well down on power. The Barnes Iota was showing clear signs of needing a replacement axle bearing and Mike Wood s brake problems were now to be replaced with clutch concerns. It was 4pm before the 500 s took their first runs. Fin Mackintosh immediately showed the way with a stunning 38.02, followed by Alistair Dent on 39.00, Shelsley specialist Steve Lawrence on and Jan Nycz the remaining driver to break 40 secs at The Iota clutch cried enough on Mike Wood s Iota so a second run was out for him while the Lawrences quietly went about preparing for their next runs. Within the next hour second runs were called and Fin again lead the way, albeit a tad slower, again followed by Alistair Dent, a slightly quicker Steve Lawrence being nudged on by an improving Nick Reynolds and Richard Grant while John Dent was able to find more than a second over his first run. 2 First practice started promptly and Alistair Dent managed a creditable 39.27, but again could not challenge the flying Fin Mackintosh who was to record sub 39 sec times all day. Richard Grant had an engine fail on P1, changed it and then fried the clutch on P2 before calling it a day a valiant effort. Robin Baxter s sound preparation showed with little work to do on the highly polished Staride and he was able to concentrate on progressively lowering his times. Likewise hill newcomers Max Mackintosh and Nick Reynolds were progressively improving. Heading the times again, Fin Mackintosh was a touch slower than the previous day challenged by Alistair Dent, Jan Nycz and Steve Lawrence albeit now joined by Nick Reynolds. Max Mackintosh was able to break 41 secs and the incorrigible John Dent put up his fastest time of the weekend at 41.43, but nobody could live this week-end with the flying doc. Sunday at Shelsley saw the second of 4 rounds counting towards the Wally Cuff Cup, open to over 500 cc motorcycle engine cars up to 1960 and FJ cars up to 1965 running under FJHRA rules. The Cup is a joint effort by the 500 OA to encourage the numerous V-twins out of garages and to provide a home for the FJ cars hitherto running in a medley of organiser classes. In V-twin Coopers were Tom Cowley, Charles Reynolds, Steve Lister and Ruth Ross, although she non-started following the arrival of a grand-daughter (congratulations Ruth!). In FJ s were Jeremy Bouckley with his immaculate Cooper and Phoebe Rolt in her well campaigned Elva. Steve Lister had polished up his smart Mk.8 in preparation for Chateau Impney the previous week, although it was finally not used for that event while Tom Cowley s w/end woes continued with a persistent misfire culminating in a fail for his second times run. Winner of the class was the well driven Elva of Phoebe Rolt, half a second ahead of Charles Reynolds. Results
